Download or read book Acidification Research Evaluation and Policy Applications written by T. Schneider and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-04-24 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large number of nationwide research programmes in the field of acidification have been carried out in the last decade. Especially in Western Europe, extensive programmes have resulted in a good overview of all the effects - mostly negative - caused by acidifying substances. There is now consensus that types of acidification damage relate to the unique geography of an area: air pollution affects vegetation; acid aerosol the ozone layer. New in this volume, is the relation between scientific results of integrated research programmes and policy actions to prevent, reduce and limit the widespread damage caused by acidification. The results of many different national research programmes are evaluated and compared to present a unique compilation for the research scientist and policy maker. In this volume thematic reviews on specific topics of acidification research are presented, followed by overviews of acidification policy plans and actual abatement plans. The result is the best review of acidification research carried out worldwide during the last decade and presentation of the critical relation between research results and policy actions.

Expanded references, citing both the classic and recent contributions, and a detailed cross-referenced index are presented. For radiologists, general surgeons, gastroenterologists, and others seeking insight into the clinical practice of radiology, this text continues to be the gold standard in the field.
Download or read book Regional Acidification Models written by Juha Kämäri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to provide meaningful information for evaluating environmental consequences of alternative control strategies of air pollutant emissions, scientists have recently initiated numerous studies aiming at collecting and making use of regional data. New kinds of mathematical models have been developed that no longer are calibrated just for individual stands or catchments but can be applied on a large regional scale. Such regional models and data were reviewed at a meeting" Models to describe the geographic extent and time evolution of acidification and air pollution damage", organized by the Finnjsh Research Project on Acidification (HAPRO), and held in Aulanko, Hiimeenlinna, Finland, July 5-8, 1988. This volume is based on the outcome of that meeting. The chapters of the volume are written by leading scientists in the field. The main objective of this volume is to discuss the potential of regional models to analyze the geographic extent of acidification as well as the environmental damage and the time evolution of:the responses of the environment. First, in Part I of the volume, sensitivity distributions of ecosystems, forest soils and surface waters are described. The focus of interest is therefore extended from the most sensitive ecosystems to sensitive and moderately sensitive parts of the environment. When formulating national and interna tional targets, it is of crucial importance to know the whole distribution of critical loads within the area, and not only the level the most sensitive ecosystem can tolerate.

Download or read book Acidification and its Policy Implications written by T. Schneider and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1986-11-01 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a wealth of reference material for research scientists and policy makers, these proceedings address the extremely complex problem of acidification - a phenomenon which is causing serious deterioration of natural environments in Europe and North America. Papers review the effects of acidification on the aquatic environment, flora, fauna and vegetation, and materials, and also review cultural properties, the ecology as a whole and the economic impact of acidification. The papers on forest-dieback cover potential stress factors and the effects on materials and cultural properties. Scientific research results are presented which deal with models as tools for abatement strategies, and underline the application of models in policy-making. The review papers of scientific research on acidification are followed by the official report of the conference, and presentations by representatives of the EEC member countries giving an overview of national research programmes and policies regarding acidification.

Download or read book The Lakes Handbook written by Patrick O'Sullivan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing concern about water supply and quality, ecosystem sustainability and restoration demands that the modern approach to the management of lakes and reservoirs should be based on a sound understanding of the application of the scientific and ecological principles that underlie freshwater processes. The Lakes Handbook provides an up-to-date overview of the application of ecologically sound approaches, methods and tools using experience gained around the world for an understanding of lakes and their management. Volume one of the Handbook addresses the physical and biological aspects of lakes pertinent to lake management, emphasising those aspects particularly relevant to large, still bodies of water. Volume two then considers lake management, with particular emphasis on sustainability, restoration and rehabilitation. This handbook will be invaluable to ecologists, environmental scientists, physical geographers and hydrologists involved in limnological research, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students looking for authoritative reviews of the key areas of limnological study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a strong tendency now for specialists in various groups of organisms, or in various processes and their consequences, to get together at more or less regular intervals to discuss their subjects. This has hap pened e. g. with the Chironomidae, Ephemeroptera, and Plecoptera among the aquatic insects, and the Rotifera, Copepoda, and Ostracoda among the zooplankton. Finally the scientists working with the Cladocera, who have been isolated from one another for a long time except on a personal basis, have decided to do the same, largely through the initiative and drive of L. Forro. Thus, the First International Symposium on Cladocera was held in Budapest on 12-16 August 1985. Most of the roughly 60 attendees were from Euro pean countries, although a fair number came from Australia, Canada, India, Nigeria, and the United States. The accompanying table presents a list of attendees by country of origin. Regrettably, a number of persons who had expressed interest in coming were unable to do so. Their names and, in two instances countries, enclosed in brackets, are given to indicate the overall extent of topics that would have been discussed. Persons who presented papers or posters are indicated by an asterisk (*). The names of persons who chaired sessions are printed in italics. A total of 34 papers and 10 posters was presented, most of which are included in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Acid Rain 2000 Conference in Tsukuba, Japan, held 10-16 December 2000, was the sixth such conference in the series, starting with Columbus, Ohio, USA, in 1975, and including Sandefjord, Norway, in 1980, Muskoka, Canada, in 1985, Glasgow, UK, in 1990, and Göteborg, Sweden, in 1995. This series of International Conferences on the acid rain problem has made a very important contribution to the process of summarising the state of current understanding and making this information available. In the 6th Conference, approximately 600 papers were presented, including talks and posters. About 300 peer-reviewed papers from the presentation appear in this volume, and will provide readers with a comprehensive review of the history and scientific aspects of the acid rain problem. The papers appear in three volumes: the first containing the plenary and keynote papers and the other two the remaining scientific papers. (Volume 1: ISBN 0-7923-7132-1; Volume 2: ISBN 0-7923-7133-X; Volume 3: ISBN 0-7923-7134-8). The Conference was arranged under the joint auspices of The Science Council of Japan, The Japanese Society of Limnology (representative academic society), Japan Association of Aerosol Science and Technology, The Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry, Japan Society for Atmospheric Environment, Chemical Society of Japan, The Ecological Society of Japan, The Japanese Society of Environmental Education, Society of Environmental Science, Japan, The Japanese Forestry Society, Japanese Society of Snow and Ice, Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, and Japan Society on Water Environment, with the cooperation of Ibaraki Prefecture and Japan Environment Agency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the 1980's, research has continued to clarify and improve our understanding of the problern of the ecological impact of acidic precipitation. From September 15-20, 1985, Canada convened the the Muskoka Symposium on Acidic Precipitation to review progress and help chart the direction of future studies. The Conference was held in central Ontario, Canada, a region of heavy sulphate deposition where aquatic effects are evident. Approximately 700 people attended, over 500 of whom were research scientists. Over 400 papers were presented. Nearly 200 of the papers are included in these proceedings, which tagether give the present state of the art of acid rain research. The Conference focused on atmospheric science and aquatic and terrestrial effects. I have made some general observations on progress in clarifying issues and linkages between these areas of research. Out standing issues which require a great deal more work are identified. These are my views, influenced by personal bias and limited by my expertise. Atmospheric Seiences Three aspects were covered: measurement techniques, the actual measure ments, and source-receptor relationships.
Download or read book Tracking Environmental Change Using Lake Sediments written by John P. Smol and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paleolimnology is a rapidly developing science that is now being used to study a suite of environmental and ecological problems. This volume is the fourth handbook in the Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research book series. The first volume (Last & Smol, 2001a) examined the acquisition and archiving of sediment cores, chronological techniques, and large-scale basin analysis methods. Volume 2 (Last & Smol, 2001b) focused on physical and chemical methods. Volume 3 (Smol et al. , 2001), along with this book, summarize the many biological methods and techniques that are available to study long-term environmental changeusing information preserved in sedimentary profiles. A subsequent volume (Birks et al. , in preparation) will deal with statistical and data handling procedures. It is our intent that these books will provide sufficient detail and breadth to be useful handbooks for both seasoned practitioners as well as newcomers to the area of paleolimnology. These books will also hopefully be useful to non-paleolimnologists (e. g. , limnologists, archeologists, palynologists, geographers, geologists, etc. ) who continue to hear and read about pal- limnology, but have little chance to explore the vast and sometimes difficult to access journal-based reference material for this rapidly expanding field. Although the chapters in these volumes target mainly lacustrine settings, many of the techniques described can also be readily applied to fluvial, glacial, marine, estuarine, and peatland environments. This current volume focuses on zoological indicators preserved in lake sediments, whilst Volume 3 focused on terrestrial, algal, and siliceous indicators.
