Book Achieving Success in English Language Arts in California Student Text

Download or read book Achieving Success in English Language Arts in California Student Text written by Howard Berrent and published by McGraw-Hill Education. This book was released on 2006-05-26 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving Success in Mathematics in California and Achieving Success in English-Language Arts in California are part of Contemporary's High School State Exit Exam Preparation series. These products offer complete preparation for high school exit level examinations for English-Language Arts and Mathematics for the state of California. Both are supported by Teacher’s Guides. Each text contains a pretest and posttest as well as an innovative lesson format to help students quickly and accurately prepare for each test. Only the skills assessed on the tests are addressed in the text. Pretests and Posttests Each text contains a pretest and posttest that mirror the format of the actual test. Diagnostic correlations charts determine student strengths and weaknesses and reference the lessons within the text for targeted remediation. Because each pretest and posttest mirror the format of the actual test, students will become familiar and comfortable with the test format, which helps to relieve test anxiety. Three-Step Lesson Format In English-Language Arts, lessons are in a three-step format that helps build student endurance. In step one, students are presented with an instructional lesson with two sample questions. This instructional lesson uses shorter, lower level reading passages. Step two is written at a slightly higher reading level and provides longer reading passages with less instruction and more practice. The final step provides a full-length passage and questions that reinforce the standard addressed in the lesson. Mathematics also uses a three-step lesson format. Step one provides modeled instruction on sample problems. Students are provided instruction on how to work two to four practice problems in step two. The final step in the lesson contains formatted practice problems that students work through on their own. Teacher’s Guides Each student text is supported by a Teacher’s Guide that provides a detailed answer key, ESOL/LEP/ELL Glossary (English-Language Arts), illustrated glossary of terms (Mathematics), correlations chart, and a chart for tracking student progress.

Book excerpt: TEACH YOUR STUDENTS TO READ WITH PRECISION AND INSIGHT The world we are preparing our students to succeed in is one bound together by words and phrases. Our students learn their literature, history, math, science, or art via a firm foundation of strong reading skills. When we teach students to read with precision, rigor, and insight, we are truly handing over the key to the kingdom. Of all the subjects we teach reading is first among equals. Grounded in advice from effective classrooms nationwide, enhanced with more than 40 video clips, Reading Reconsidered takes you into the trenches with actionable guidance from real-life educators and instructional champions. The authors address the anxiety-inducing world of Common Core State Standards, distilling from those standards four key ideas that help hone teaching practices both generally and in preparation for assessments. This 'Core of the Core' comprises the first half of the book and instructs educators on how to teach students to: read harder texts, 'closely read' texts rigorously and intentionally, read nonfiction more effectively, and write more effectively in direct response to texts. The second half of Reading Reconsidered reinforces these principles, coupling them with the 'fundamentals' of reading instruction—a host of techniques and subject specific tools to reconsider how teachers approach such essential topics as vocabulary, interactive reading, and student autonomy. Reading Reconsidered breaks an overly broad issue into clear, easy-to-implement approaches. Filled with practical tools, including: 44 video clips of exemplar teachers demonstrating the techniques and principles in their classrooms (note: for online access of this content, please visit my.teachlikeachampion.com) Recommended book lists Downloadable tips and templates on key topics like reading nonfiction, vocabulary instruction, and literary terms and definitions. Reading Reconsidered provides the framework necessary for teachers to ensure that students forge futures as lifelong readers.
