Book The Skeffington Perspective of the Behavioral Model of Optometric Data Analysis and Vision Care

Download or read book The Skeffington Perspective of the Behavioral Model of Optometric Data Analysis and Vision Care written by Earl P. Schmitt O.D Ed.D D.O.S. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-04-28 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No systematic analysis of optometric clinical data can be undertaken unless the findings are referred to a logical model that allows comparisons to be made of interaction characteristics that exist between the accommodative and convergence mechanisms inherent to the human vision system. Concomitantly, many of the concepts applied during any such analytical process are based on hypothetical constructs. This text re-examines the elements originally proposed by Dr. A.M. Skeffington, and offers a revised insight into how performance changes may occur as individual visual behavior adapts to the impact of environmental demands. In-depth research and extensive references attempt to substantiate the Skeffington paradigm of professional vision analysis. Long-standing challenges to the optometric profession are identified. As presented, the contents are appropriate for use as a classroom text, for reference, and for identifying areas for clinical research.

Book Intersensory Perception and Sensory Integration

Download or read book Intersensory Perception and Sensory Integration written by Richard D. Walk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on intersensory perception and sensory integration is the second volume of the series, Perception and Perceptual Development: A Critical Review Series. The topic of the volume is timely, for in recent years, many investigators have noted that information about any natural event is obtained by a perceiver from a variety of sources. Such an observation immediately leads to the question of how this information is synthesized and organized. Of course, the implication that there are several discrete input channels that must be processed has come under immediate attack by researchers such as the Gibsons. They find it extremely artificial to regard natural information as being cut up and requiring cementing. Nevertheless, the possibility that during ontogene sis, perception involves the integration of separate information has attracted the attention of scholars concerned with both normal and abnormal development. In the case of normal development, a lively controversy has arisen between those who believe perceptual develop ment goes from integration toward differentiation and those who hold the opposite view. In the case of abnormal psychological development such as learning disabilities, many workers have suggested that percep tual integration is at fault. In thinking about the issues raised in this volume, we are particularly indebted to our former teachers and colleagues: Eleanor and James Gibson, T. A. Ryan, Robert B. MacLeod, and Jerome Bruner. We are pleased to acknowledge the secretarial help of Karen Weeks in the preparation of this volume.

Book The Oxford Handbook of School Psychology

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of School Psychology written by Melissa A. Bray Ph.D. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 920 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its roots in clinical and educational psychology, school psychology is an ever-changing field that encompasses a diversity of topics. The Oxford Handbook of School Psychology synthesizes the most vital and relevant literature in all of these areas, producing a state-of-the-art, authoritative resource for practitioners, researchers, and parents. Comprising chapters authored by the leading figures in school psychology, The Oxford Handbook of School Psychology focuses on the significant issues, new developments, and scientific findings that continue to change the practical landscape. The handbook's focuses include: - allegiance to the reciprocal relationship between science and practice to promote problem-solving and enrichment models - service delivery designed to improve competencies of all students - the relationship between general cognitive ability and important life outcomes - the development of viable and enduring educational, family, and community systems to support students - increasing student diversity and the necessity of increased sensitivity to the influences of social, cultural, political, and legislative variables of schooling - outlining tenable reasons why, since the end of World War II, children from kindergarten through the secondary grades have generally not been the recipients of a superior or efficient educational system - all relevant legislation, including the No Child Left Behind Act, and the ongoing question of who or what is responsible for the inadequate academic preparation of inner-city children - building a cumulative knowledge base to better facilitate students' academic, social, and personal competencies including the promotion of positive mental health and subjective well-being The scholarship compiled here is a must-read for practitioners, students, and faculty, and an ideal resource for parents seeking a scientific approach to the efficacy of school psychology practices. In both breadth and depth, this handbook promises to serve as the benchmark reference work for years to come.
