Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. The International Magnetospheric Study, or IMS, was an international program under the auspices of SCOSTEP in which a coordinated effort was made to understand magnetospheric processes. The active phase of the IMS, during which data were gathered, ran from 1976 to 1979 with the different data gathering efforts coming on line at various times during this period. Although there were many national programs devoted to the IMS the coordination between countries was principally at the level of the participating scientists rather than at the level of the bureaucracy. This aspect of the IMS had its advantages and its disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is that there is no coordinated system for reporting of the IMS results, either with regard to the data gathering effort, the workshops devoted to these data or the scientific results of the IMS. It is in an attempt to introduce some order in this chaos we have compiled the papers in this book. We hope that the book serves both the active researcher involved heavily in the IMS from the beginning and those who would like to gain entry into the IMS study effort. For while the active data gathering phase is over, the data analysis phase has just begun and there is much to do with the data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings are based on the invited talks and selected research reports presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "POLAR CAP BOUNDARY PHENOMENA" held at Longyearbyen, Svalbard, June 4 - 13, 1997. The role of the polar cap and its boundary is very substantial in solar-terrestrial physics. At this NATO AS! a major change in thinking on the "cusp" precipitation region in the high-latitude days ide upper atmosphere was reflected, at least for intervals when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is directed southward. It is likely that this has implications for northward IMF as well. The change comes from the now almost complete acceptance of the concept of magnetosheath particle entry along open magnetic field lines and the evolution of the precipitation into the upper atmosphere with time elapsed since magnetic reconnection which opened the field line. A key prediction of this view is that the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) is on open field lines.

Book Dayside and Polar Cap Aurora

  • Author : Per Even Sandholt
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Dayside and Polar Cap Aurora written by Per Even Sandholt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-02 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The auroral emissions in the upper atmosphere of the polar regions of the Earth are evidence of the capture of energetic particles from the Sun, streaming by the Earth as the solar wind. These auroral emissions, then, are a window to outer space, and can provide us with valuable information about electrodynamic coupling processes between the solar wind and the Earth's ionosphere and upper atmosphere. Studying the physics of these phenomena extends our understanding of our plasma universe. Ground-based remote-sensing techniques, able to monitor continuously the variations in the signatures of aurorae, in combination with in-situ satellite and rocket measurements, promise to advance dramatically our understanding of the physical processes taking place at the interface of the atmospheres of the Earth and the Sun. Decoding their complexity brings us closer to reliable prediction of communication environments, especially at high latitudes. This understanding, in turn, will help us resolve problems of communication and navigation across polar regions.

Book Physics Of Space Plasmas

Download or read book Physics Of Space Plasmas written by George K Parks and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook was developed to provide seniors and first-year graduate students in physical sciences with a general knowledge of electrodynamic phenomena in space. Since the launch of the first unmanned satellite in 1957, experiments have been performed to study the behavior of electromagnetic fields and charged particles. There is now a considerable amount of data on hand, and many articles, including excellent review articles, have been written for the specialists. However, for students, new researchers, and non-specialists, a need still exists for a book that integrates these observations in a coherent way. This book is an attempt to meet that need by using the theory of classical electrodynamics to unify space observations. The contents of this book are based on classroom notes developed for an introductory space physics course that the author has taught for many years at the University of Washington. Students taking the course normally have had an undergraduate course in electricity and magnetism but they come with very little knowledge about space.

Book The Scientific Satellite Programme during the International Magnetospheric Study

Download or read book The Scientific Satellite Programme during the International Magnetospheric Study written by K. Knott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 10th ESLAB Symposium was held at Grossenzersdorf near Vienna on 10-13 June 1975 under the title 'The Scientific Satellite Programme During the Inter national Magnetospheric Study'. The Symposium was attended by an invited audience of 60 scientists from the ESA Member States, the United States, Japan, Canada and Austria. Following a report by the joint COSPAR-IUCSTP Special Working Group, the International Magnetospheric Study (lMS) is proposed as an international co operative enterprise of limited duration, having as its principal objective the achie vement of a comprehensive, quantitative understanding of the dynamical processes operating in the Earth's plasma and field environment. In order to accomplish this objective, it is thought to be necessary to carry out simultaneous measurements with nearly identical instrumentation at various points in space. These measurements will need to be made in combination with appropriate observations at or near the Earth's surface. Besides near-Earth observations by ground-based, rocket- and balloon-borne instrumentation, satellite investigations are expected to make an important contri bution to the IMS. A number of satellites assigned to magnetospheric research have recently been launched, or will be launched shortly, to be operational during the IMS. The European Space Agency has devoted two of its forthcoming scientific satellites - GEOS and ISEE-B - to magnetospheric and interplanetary research.
