Book Victims of Progress

Download or read book Victims of Progress written by John H. Bodley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victims of Progress, now in its sixth edition, offers a compelling account of how technology and development affect indigenous peoples throughout the world. Bodley’s expansive look at the struggle between small-scale indigenous societies, and the colonists and corporate developers who have infringed their territories reaches from 1800 into today. He examines major issues of intervention such as social engineering, economic development, self-determination, health and disease, global warming, and ecocide. Small-scale societies, Bodley convincingly demonstrates, have survived by organizing politically to defend their basic human rights. Providing a provocative context in which to think about civilization and its costs—shedding light on how we are all victims of progress—the sixth edition features expanded discussion of “uprising politics,” Tebtebba (a particularly active indigenous organization), and voluntary isolation. A wholly new chapter devotes full coverage to the costs of global warming to indigenous peoples in the Pacific and the Arctic. Finally, new appendixes guide readers to recent protest petitions as well as online resources and videos.

Book Aboriginal Student Engagement and Achievement

Download or read book Aboriginal Student Engagement and Achievement written by Lorenzo Cherubini and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aboriginal people in Canada want an education that reflects their cultural values and linguistic heritages, an education that will foster their children’s engagement and identity and not marginalize them as learners. Lorenzo Cherubini investigates the effectiveness of culturally relevant programs in Ontario by turning the spotlight on a rare success story – one urban high school’s attempt to recognize Aboriginal students’ cultural and academic needs while helping them build relationships with non-Aboriginal students. In this insightful study, teachers, students, youth counsellors, parents and caregivers, community leaders, and administrators share their thoughts on the program, adding their voices to the existing literature and giving a human face to the quantitative data on Aboriginal education and achievement. Aboriginal students constitute one of the fastest-growing groups in Canada’s public schools. This timely study reveals how the current system is failing indigenous students and offers recommendations for enhancing their achievement levels in Ontario, Canada, and abroad.

Book Aboriginal Affairs 1967 2005

Download or read book Aboriginal Affairs 1967 2005 written by Max Griffiths and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 40 years after the referendum which gave the Commonwealth - rather than the various states - power to make laws covering the Aboriginal people of Australia, there is little evidence that any real progress has been made towards bettering the Aborigines' position. The key issue during this time has been the battle for Aboriginal land rights. Despite High Court decisions on two cases favoring the Aborigines' cause, any real benefit to them has been largely negated by prolonged litigation over granting title, and by arguments as to whether the land in question should be used for economic benefit or simply retained for cultural preservation. Much attention and considerable financial resources have also been directed to Aboriginal health, where traditional areas of health concern have been replaced with problems such as alcoholism. Successive federal governments have devised numerous policies and programs intended to give Australia's Aboriginal peoples the right to self-determination, and have provided large sums to make this possible. On some occasions these policies have been replaced within twelve months indicating their lack of success. Aboriginal Affairs is a detailed and objective account from the time of the referendum of 1967, and argues the case for a total overhaul of government policies and programs.
