Book excerpt: Yervant Odian's Accursed Years is a remarkable account of the Armenian Genocide written by an Armenian intellectual in 1919, soon after the events in question. His survival during this period was probably due to hte fact that he avoided arrest in Constantinople on the night of April 24, 1915 by going into hiding. Odian was eventually arrested and exiled in differetn stages as far as El Bousera, pat of Der Zor. He arrived there after hundreds of thousands of Armenian deportees had been killed in the region through starvation, disease and massacre. Odian's survival and escape allowed him to tell his own story and give insights into the fate of others.

Book excerpt: "Joyce Carol Oates has written what may be the world’s finest postmodern Gothic novel: E.L. Doctorow’s Ragtime set in Dracula’s castle. It’s dense, challenging, problematic, horrifying, funny, prolix and full of crazy people. You should read it.” —Stephen King, New York Times Book Review Princeton, New Jersey at the turn of the 20th century: a tranquil place to raise a family, a genteel town for genteel souls. But something dark and dangerous lurks at the edges of the town, corrupting and infecting its residents. Vampires and ghosts haunt the dreams of the innocent. A powerful curse besets the elite families of Princeton—their daughters begin disappearing. A young bride on the verge of the altar is seduced and abducted by a dangerously compelling man—a shape-shifting, vaguely European prince who might just be the devil, and who spreads his curse upon a richly deserving community of white Anglo-Saxon privilege. And in the Pine Barrens that border the town, a lush and terrifying underworld opens up. When the bride’s brother sets out against all odds to find her, his path will cross those of Princeton’s most formidable people, from Grover Cleveland, fresh out of his second term in the White House and retired to town for a quieter life, to soon-to-be commander in chief Woodrow Wilson, president of the University, and a complex individual obsessed to the point of madness with his need to retain power; from the young Socialist idealist Upton Sinclair, to his charismatic comrade Jack London, and the most famous writer of the era, Samuel Clemens/ Mark Twain—all plagued by “accursed” visions. Narrated with Oates's unmistakable psychological insight, The Accursed combines beautifully transporting historical detail with chilling supernatural elements to stunning effect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War I was a watershed, a defining moment, in Armenian history. Its effects were unprecedented in that it resulted in what no other war, invasion, or occupation had achieved in three thousand years of identifiable Armenian existence. This calamity was the physical elimination of the Armenian people and most of the evidence of their ever having lived on the great Armenian Plateau, to which the perpetrator side soon gave the new name of Eastern Anatolia. The bearers of an impressive martial and cultural history, the Armenians had also known repeated trials and tribulations, waves of massacre, captivity, and exile, but even in the darkest of times there had always been enough remaining to revive, rebuild, and go forward. This third volume in a series edited by Richard Hovannisian, the dean of Armenian historians, provides a unique fusion of the history, philosophy, literature, art, music, and educational aspects of the Armenian experience. It further provides a rich storehouse of information on comparative dimensions of the Armenian genocide in relation to the Assyrian, Greek and Jewish situations, and beyond that, paradoxes in American and French policy responses to the Armenian genocides. The volume concludes with a trio of essays concerning fundamental questions of historiography and politics that either make possible or can inhibit reconciliation of ancient truths and righting ancient wrongs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strange Work is a verse by verse commentary on the Bible book of Revelation. Nearly three millennia ago, the prophet Isaiah predicted that the Lord God of hosts would one day rise up and do a strange work on the Earth. He said it would come as a destruction upon the whole earth (Isaiah 28:21-22). The last thing that modern man expects is that the true and living God will one day actually intervene upon the Earth. Yet, with one voice, the prophets of the Bible predict that is exactly what He will do. The book of Revelation is the most detailed of the Bible's prophecies of that fast approaching supernatural intervention on planet Earth. Someone has dubbed the book of Revelation, ""The prophetic Grand Central Station of the Bible."" That is a very good way to describe it. All the great eschatological (end time) themes in the Bible run to the book of Revelation like train-tracks to a central hub.
