Book Accuracy of Strain Measurements at Elevated Temperatures with Electric Resistance Strain Gages

Download or read book Accuracy of Strain Measurements at Elevated Temperatures with Electric Resistance Strain Gages written by M. M. Lemcoe and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pertinent conclusions from an extensive study at the Liquid Metal Engineering Center (LMEC) of the accuracy and performance of high-temperature strain gages are presented, with particular emphasis on that portion of the study pertaining to an evaluation of 16 Armour D-platinum gages fabricated at the LMEC for use up to 1200 F. (Armour D alloy is 70 percent iron, 20 percent chromium, and 10 percent aluminum.) Test apparatus and procedures used to evaluate these gages are described. Variations in gage-to-gage performance, as a function of the test sequence, are analyzed on a statistical basis to assess gage accuracy. It is concluded that there are no suitable commercial gages for the measurement of strains on liquid metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) components at temperatures up to 1200 F, and that the Armour D-platinum gage performed better than any of the commercial gages similarly evaluated at the LMEC for use up to 1200 F. The presentation should be of particular interest to those involved in high-temperature strain measurement, or in the interpretation of high-temperature strain measurement with respect to structural or materials behavior.

Book Development of High temperature Strain Gages

Download or read book Development of High temperature Strain Gages written by J. W. Pitts and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary is presented of a research program aimed at the improvement of high-temperature strain gages of the electrical resistance type. Potential ceramic and metal components were evaluated and a gage was devised that was based on these evaluations. This gage (NBS 5B) was flexible and easy to install; however, it lacked resistance stability at higher temperatures. In an attempt to minimize this deficiency, ceramic cements were developed that showed greater electrical resistivity than had been previously observed in the range 800 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit; also, a technique was devised for increasing the resistance to ground by applying a fired-on ceramic coating to the grid of a specifically developed unbacked gage. A study was made of the cause of the erratic response of cemented gages that had not been preheated prior to use. There were strong indications that the erratic response was caused mostly by the rapid decrease in resistance that accompanied structural changes in the cement.

Book The Bonded Electrical Resistance Strain Gage

Download or read book The Bonded Electrical Resistance Strain Gage written by William M. Murray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-04-30 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental stress analysis is an important tool in the overall design and development of machinery and structures. While analytical techniques and computer solutions are available during the design stage, the results are still dependent on many assumptions that must be made in order to adapt them to the problems at hand. One popular method of finding structural and design weaknesses is through the use of the electrical resistance strain gage. These devices are relatively low in cost, easily applied by a reasonably skilled technician, and require little investment in instrumentation (for the general user), yet they yield a wealth of information in a relatively short time period. The information and its validity is, of course, dependent on the training and knowledge of the engineer who plans the tests and reduces the data. In addition to serving as a reference for engineers, this practical, instructive book has a high potential as a textbook for senior and first-year graduate students in engineering and related fields, such as engineering physics and geology. A solutions manual is available to instructors using the book as a text. Book Temperature Effect on Strain Measurement by Using Weldable Electrical Resistance Strain Gages

Download or read book Temperature Effect on Strain Measurement by Using Weldable Electrical Resistance Strain Gages written by PTV Gomes and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal output from two different strain gage types was analyzed over a temperature range from 20-500°C. The influence of applied loads was also examined. The strain gages were attached to the specimens in three different configurations. Thermal output was efficiently compensated for using a quarter-bridge configuration. Relative large errors were found using half-bridge configurations. The obtained thermal output values, with and without application of load, are discussed.

Book Electrical Properties of Materials for High Temperature Strain Gage Applications

Download or read book Electrical Properties of Materials for High Temperature Strain Gage Applications written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was done on the electrical resistance of materials that are potentially useful as resistance strain gages at high temperatures under static strain conditions. Initially a number of binary alloys were investigated. Later, third elements were added to these alloys, all of which were prepared by arc melting. Several transition metals were selected for experimentation, most prepared as thin films. Difficulties with electrical contacts thwarted efforts to extend measurements to the targeted 1000 C, but results obtained did suggest ways of improving the electrical resistance characteristics of certain materials. Book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace

Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace written by Markus G. R. Sause and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students.
