This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Account of Steam Navigation in New England N 0 one realizes better than the author the lack of inter est generally taken in steam vessels. The sailing ship and every part of her historyhas been dealt with by many well informed and interesting writers. In spite of the vital part played in the modern world by the steam-driven craft, she has but few admirers and still fewer historians. However, the early records dealing with the development of steam navigation are valuable, and if not preserved, will soon be lost, and many have already disappeared. Hence the reason for this little book, which does not pre tend to be a complete or chronological history of steam navigation along the coast of New England, but rather a series of comprehensive notes for the use of the student or future historian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes for a History of Steam Navigation The little publication in which Hulls attempted to make his scheme known to the world was printed in London in 1737. It is entitled A Description and Draught of a new-invented Machine for carrying Ves sale or Ships out of or into any Harbour, Port, or River against Wind and Tide or in a Calm. In his preface he says, There is one great hardship lies too commonly upon those who propose to advance some new though useful scheme for the public benefit. The world abou cd ing more in rash censure than in a candid and unprejudiced estimation of things, if a person does not answer their expectations in every point, instead of friendly treatment for his good in tentions, he too often meets with ridicule and contempt. But I hope this will not be my case, but that they will form a judgment of my present undertaking only from trial. If it should be said that I have filled this tract with things that foreign to the matter proposed, I answer: There is nothing in it but what is necessary to be understood by those who desire to know the nature of that machine which I now offer to the world, and I hope that, through the blessing of God, it may prove serviceable to my country. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
