Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Kit Tyler is marked by suspicion and disapproval from the moment she arrives on the unfamiliar shores of colonial Connecticut in 1687. Alone and desperate, she has been forced to leave her beloved home on the island of Barbados and join a family she has never met. Torn between her quest for belonging and her desire to be true to herself, Kit struggles to survive in a hostile place. Just when it seems she must give up, she finds a kindred spirit. But Kit's friendship with Hannah Tupper, believed by the colonists to be a witch, proves more taboo than she could have imagined and ultimately forces Kit to choose between her heart and her duty. Elizabeth George Speare won the 1959 Newbery Medal for this portrayal of a heroine whom readers will admire for her unwavering sense of truth as well as her infinite capacity to love.

Book Developments in Bovine Immunology An Integrated View

Download or read book Developments in Bovine Immunology An Integrated View written by Kieran G. Meade and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s population is predicted to hit 9 Billion by 2050, and with it food demand is predicted to increase substantially. The World Bank estimates that cereal and meat production needs to increase by 50% and 85% respectively between 2000 and 2030 to meet demand, putting serious pressure on the global agricultural industry. Critical to meeting this demand for food are mechanisms to reduce the incidence of animal disease. With in excess of 1.3 billion cattle globally, the total cost of infectious diseases is difficult to estimate. However in North America alone, the cost is predicted to be $18 billion annually. Non-infectious diseases also account for another major impediment to the production capacity and welfare of animals as well as the economic sustainability of farming. However animal diseases have implications that spread far beyond the farm gate. Infectious agents can also contaminate the food chain, and potentially affect human health. Controlling diseases, through better preventative and treatment methods requires a detailed understanding of the immune response in livestock species. Multiple studies have identified associations between variation in immune genes and disease susceptibility, which potentially opens up new avenues to select animals with superior disease resistance. Detailed understanding of immunity in cattle is leading to the design of more effective vaccines. Furthermore, appreciation of the significant differences between rodent and human immune responses has also led to bovine models being developed for some human diseases. The publication of the bovine genome and the advent of next-generation sequencing technologies have facilitated a massive expansion in our knowledge of the immune response in cattle. As a result there has been an explosion of exciting research findings including in metagenomics and epigenetics. Recently, there has been a welcome move to integrate our emerging understanding of the immune response with detailed studies of other important physiological processes including nutrition and reproduction. The interactions between the reproductive system, nutrition and the immune system are of particular interest, since each places significant demands on the animal at various stages through the production cycle. The interplay between these morphologically diffuse systems involves widely distributed chemical signals in response to environmental input, and each system must interact for the normal functioning of the other. A comprehensive “systems” approach is improving our understanding of normal physiological interactions between these systems and furthermore, how dysregulation can lead to disease. The successful translation of bovine immunological research into improved treatments for animal disease requires tight interaction between diverse scientific and clinical disciplines including immunology, microbiology, endocrinology, physiology, nutrition, reproduction and clinical veterinary medicine. With so much recent progress in the field, we believe that it is valuable and well-timed to review the broad variety of the relevant studies that attempt to increase our understanding through comprehensive collaboration between these disciplines. We are looking forward to a wide and vivid discussion of developments in bovine immunology and related issues, and we expect that our readers profoundly benefit from new exciting insights and fruitful collaborations.

Book Indoor flying for beginners

Download or read book Indoor flying for beginners written by Wolfgang Traxler and published by Verlag für Technik und Handwerk. This book was released on with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going flying – even in winter when it's stormy and snowing outside - is a long-cherished dream of model pilots. Until just a few years ago, the fulfilment of this dream of flying indoors was reserved for only a few specialists. Only the discovery of the material "Depron" for model flying, brushless motors and LiPo batteries as well as the ever smaller and lighter components for the RC system make possible flying weights and performances with which even demanding aerobatics, including 3D flight, can be realised. This book makes it easier for the interested model pilot to get started in indoor (aerobatic) flying and gives tips on equipment as well as on building an indoor flying model. From the content: • Silhouette or full fuselage, self-built or finished model? • CFRP profiles, Depron, surface design • Motor, controller, batteries, connectors, charging station • The RC components - transmitter, receiver, servos, rudder linkages, pushrods, cable linkages, • Tips on material processing and assembly • Tips for flying in - flying technique in the hangar and first aerobatic manoeuvres • Illustrated repair instructions for a damaged front wing • Requirements for the hall, contact persons, safety rules, hall regulations, • "preparation" of the hall and special features of the unfamiliar environment • Tabular compilation of the models used

Book The Nusayr Alaw Religion

Download or read book The Nusayr Alaw Religion written by Meir M. Bar-Asher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nusayrīs - also known as ʿAlawīs -have been in power in Syria for the past three decades. Little is known of their origins or their long history, while their religious creeds and thought are somewhat better known. The main reason for our fragmentary knowledge of the Nusayrī religion is that, since its beginnings, it has always been the secret faith of a self-conscious elite that zealously guarded its sectarian literature. The Nusayrī-ʿAlawī faith is a clear example of a syncretistic religion. It combines and fuses elements of cults and creeds of very disparate, and remote, origins. Among these are various pagan beliefs (residues of ancient Mesopotamian and Syrian cults), as well as Persian, Christian, Gnostic, and Muslim - both Sunnī and Shīʿī - religious precepts and practices. All these components have been brought together in a syncretistic religious system that has assumed a heterodox Shīʿī garb. The present volume presents a mosaic of fundamental aspects of Nusayrī theology and liturgy. It demonstrates the complexity of Nusayrī theology and the diversity of religious thought within the Nusayrī fold.

Book Can Traditional Chinese Medicines affect Endocrine Diseases via Effects on the Intestinal Flora

Download or read book Can Traditional Chinese Medicines affect Endocrine Diseases via Effects on the Intestinal Flora written by Zhoujin Tan and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intestinal flora is a diversified and dynamic micro-ecosystem, whose structure and function have become a research hotspot in life sciences and medicine. The close relationship between intestinal flora and metabolic diseases has been verified by numerous studies. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is used for disease prevention and treatment within China and is attracting attention and receiving more and more recognition from other countries all over the world. Consequently, the interaction of the two hotspots deserves further investigation. Although TCM has been put into practice for thousands of years, the study of its specific mechanism of action and related targets for the treatment of endocrine diseases is still at an exploratory stage. For TCM with oral administration as the main usage, the key targets of their active ingredients may be inextricably linked to the decomposition and metabolic effects of certain intestinal bacterium. All these hypotheses need to be tested further.
