Book The Accomplished Muskrat Trapper A Book on Trapping for Amateurs

Download or read book The Accomplished Muskrat Trapper A Book on Trapping for Amateurs written by Arno Erdman Schmidt and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In placing this booklet before the great fraternity of American trappers, the author does not propose to exercise any pedagogical influence upon the truly professional trapper, who, seasoned in the hard school of experience, knows the animals he is seeking, like a mother knows her child. It is his wish, however, to assist and guide the amateur to greater success. Practically all text-books written for trappers, treating the subject of trapping and raw furs, heretofore have been neglectful of two things, namely, how to trap the animals under various conditions, and the assorting and grading of raw furs. Of all furbearers, the muskrat is the most numerous and least wary, hence very easily trapped — in consequence of this: it has been neglected by writers of trapping to a greater extent than any other fur-bearing animals. The author of this book feels that he is instrumental in introducing to thousands of muskrat trappers a long-felt want. Being a trapper of wide experience, he early recognized the worth of the methods contained herein. Knowing that a fair trial will convince the most skeptical as to the merits and practicability of these methods, the writer feels sure that this little booklet will meet with the hearty approval of trappers everywhere.

Book The Wit and Wisdom of an Old Muskrat Trapper

Download or read book The Wit and Wisdom of an Old Muskrat Trapper written by Ray M. Theuret and published by . This book was released on 2005-05 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ray Morse Theuret and his twin brother Roy were born on a small farm near Chapmansville, Pennsylvania in 1912. Ray and Roy had two sisters, Edith Theuret Tingley and Ola Theuret Irwin. In 1938, Ray married his childhood sweetheart Alice Akerly. They had two children, Bonnie and Richard, one granddaughter, April Walker, and two great-grandchildren, Derek and Amber Cope. Ray had a successful career as an auditor with the federal government and spent several years with the Army Audit Agency. One of the stories from those days appears in this collection, "A Trip to Vietnam." The complete account was published as "Army Audit Days." One of his most important personal achievements was receiving his CPA in 1947. In his retirement years, Ray spent much of his time playing golf, his goal of being a professional athlete, almost achieved. He had three holes in one, a tribute to his desire and competitive spirit. He loved the time he spent in Florida at his apartment at Seahaven and at the Pompano Beach Golf Club. When he was not golfing or thinking about golfing, Ray was writing. In addition to his chronicles of his days with Army Audit, he completed his autobiography, and a collection of short stories titled "Franklin Park." His discoveries of the writers' group in Bowie, Maryland, and then another group at Lighthouse Point, Florida were miracles to him. His participation in these groups greatly enhanced his final years. Ray Theuret wanted to be remembered as a church going man. He was deeply spiritual, non-judgmental, and much loved and admired by many people during his lifetime. o m of an O ld Muskr at Tr apper: Essays and St ories

Book Comparisons of Muskrat Ondatra Zibethicus Trapping Efficiency and Incidental Take of Non target Water Birds Using Covered and Uncovered Float Sets research

Download or read book Comparisons of Muskrat Ondatra Zibethicus Trapping Efficiency and Incidental Take of Non target Water Birds Using Covered and Uncovered Float Sets research written by Rodney J. Gross and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) are becoming a highly sought after furbearer species in North Dakota because of current pelt prices. In North Dakota, regulation changes in 2011 allowed trappers to use float sets to trap muskrats during the spring season. The regulations require float sets to have a covering made of wire mesh, wood, or plastic and with an opening not exceeding 8 in. high by 8 in. wide to attempt to minimize incidental take of non-target species. Surprisingly, no research has been conducted in the Great Plains region on incidence of injury to waterfowl or other water birds from being captured in a floating muskrat trap. The only other research on this subject was over 50 years ago, in the state of Maine. The primary goal of this project is to determine if muskrat float set covers are effective at eliminating incidental take of non-target species. We completed the first year of a 2-year study conducted in the Central Flyway used by migrating waterfowl in eastern North Dakota. Our trapping efforts focused on 4 areas: Devils Lake Basin, Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and Chase Lake Wetland Management District (WMD), and Tewaukon NWR. Float sets were deployed without covers, with covers of 1 in. by 1 in. wire mesh, and with covers of 6 in. by 6 in. wire mesh at each wetland. During the 2012 fall trapping season, 22 muskrats and no incidental species were captured over 273 trap-nights. During the 2013 spring trapping season, 72 muskrats and 1 non-target water bird (Black-crowned night-heron [Nycticorax nycticorax]) were captured over 1,319 trap nights. The 1 non-target bird was captured in an uncovered float set. The majority of muskrats (46.8%) were captured on float sets with a 6 in. by 6 in. wire mesh covering.
