Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Accidental Sisters follows the lives of five refugee women in Houston, Texas, an epicenter of refugee resettlement, as they make their way through a yearlong program for struggling single mother refugees overseen by Alia Altikrity, herself a former refugee from Iraq. Entirely grounded in the words of each of these women--Mina, also from Iraq; Mendy from Sudan; Sara and Zara from Syria; and Elikya from the Democratic Republic of Congo--this book recounts, with deep insight, the lives they lived in their mother countries and the way they were forced to flee with their children into the uncertainty of displacement in neighboring lands. And although it documents the safety and refuge the women eventually find in the new city to which they have been permanently resettled, it critiques the insistence of the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program on rapid self-sufficiency and offers an alternative vision of the American Dream, one grounded in a sisterhood of mutual care for one another"--

To be fair, Lia didn't know who Jude McAllister was when they met. Studying abroad for her master's program, all she knows is that she's a little lonely and he's very charming, even as they have an epically sexy argument about which type of football is superior. In Jude's mind, shagging the feisty American girl is exactly what he needs. He's been fighting the clock of his long-standing football career and the younger players primed to take his position. Proving that he can feel like his old self again-something he's been trying to do with everyone in his life-should be easier after blowing off steam with Lia. But oh baby, when a plus sign pops up on Lia's pregnancy test, that 'one night' becomes a whole lot more. Book The Book of Wanderings

Download or read book The Book of Wanderings written by Kimberly Meyer and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To a mother and daughter on an illuminating pilgrimage, this is what the desert said: Carry only what you need. Burn what can't be saved. Leave the remnants as an offering. When Kimberly Meyer gave birth to her first daughter, Ellie, during her senior year of college, the bohemian life of exploration she had once imagined for herself was lost in the responsibilities of single motherhood. For years, both mother and daughter were haunted by how Ellie came into being-Kimberly through a restless ache for the world beyond, Ellie through a fear of abandonment. Longing to bond with Ellie, now a college student, and longing, too, to rediscover herself, Kimberly sets off with her daughter on a quest for meaning across the globe. Leaving behind the rhythms of ordinary life in Houston, Texas, they dedicate a summer to retracing the footsteps of Felix Fabri, a medieval Dominican friar whose written account of his travels resonates with Kimberly. Their mother-daughter pilgrimage takes them to exotic destinations infused with mystery, spirituality, and rich history-from Venice to the Mediterranean through Greece and partitioned Cyprus, to Israel and across the Sinai Desert with Bedouin guides, to the Palestinian territories and to Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt. In spare and gorgeous prose, The Book of Wanderings tells the story of Kimberly and Ellie's journey, and of the intimate, lasting bond they forge along the way. A meditation on stripping away the distractions, on simplicity, on how to live, this is a vibrant memoir with the power to both transport readers to far-off lands and to bring them in closer connection with themselves. It will appeal to anyone who has contemplated the road not taken, who has experienced the gnawing feeling that there is something more, who has faced the void-of offspring leaving, of mortality looming, of searching for someplace that feels, finally, like home.

Book excerpt: “My name is Courtney. I’m an accidental feminist.” Although many Christians wouldn’t identify themselves as feminists, the reality is that the feminist movement has influenced us all in profound ways. We unconsciously reflect our culture’s ideas related to womanhood rather than what’s found in the Bible. In this book, Courtney Reissig—a wife, mom, and successful writer—recounts her journey out of “accidental feminism,” offering wise counsel for Christian women related to relationships, body image, and more—drawing from the Bible rather than culture. Whether you’re a committed feminist, a staunch traditionalist, or somewhere in between, this book will help you answer the question, “What does it mean to be a Christian woman?” You’ll discover the joy, purpose and importance that are found in God’s good design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A unique window into human behavior and development." —Steven Pinker The riveting story of two sets of identical twins separated at birth and improbably reunited as adults, a dream case for exploring nature and nurture. Accidental Brothers tells the unique story of two sets of identical Colombian twin brothers who discovered at age 25 that they were mistakenly raised as fraternal twins—when they were not even biological brothers. Due to an oversight that presumably occurred in the hospital nursery, one twin in each pair was switched with a twin in the other pair. The result was two sets of unrelated “fraternal” twins—Jorge and Carlos, who were raised in the lively city of Bogotá; and William and Wilber, who were raised in the remote rural village of La Paz, 150 miles away. Their parents and siblings were aware of the enormous physical and behavioral differences between the members of each set, but never doubted that the two belonged in their biological families. Everyone’s life unraveled when one of the twins—William—was mistaken by a young woman for his real identical twin, Jorge. Her “discovery” led to the truth—that the alleged twins were not twins at all, but rather unrelated individuals who ended up with the wrong families. Blending great science and human interest, Accidental Brothers by Nancy L. Segal and Yesika S. Montoya will inform and entertain anyone interested in how twin studies illuminate the origins of human behavior, as well as mother-infant identification and the chance events that can have profound consequences on our lives.

Book excerpt: Turtles All the Way Down meets Love and Luck in this “lively” (Publishers Weekly), romantic road trip story about a teen girl’s last chance to have an epic summer with her best friend before everything changes. Florie’s OCD and her mother’s worrying have kept her from a lot of things, like having an after-school job and getting her driver’s license. And now that she’s graduated high school, while her best friend Kacey is headed off to Portland in the fall, Florie’s taking a parent-sanctioned gap year off before starting college. When the decision was made, Florie was on board, but now she can’t ignore the growing itch to become the person she wants to be and venture outside the quaint, boring Washington town she grew up in. Winning tickets to see her favorite true crime podcast’s live show in California gives her the opportunity to do just that, if only for a few days. So—unbeknownst to their parents—Kacey and Florie set off on a road trip to San Francisco. The only downside in Florie’s opinion? Sam, Kacey’s older brother and Florie’s forever crush, is their ride. The Samson Hodge, who Florie hasn’t seen since winter break, and who she’d prefer to never see again, if possible. But Florie is willing to put up with Sam if it means one last adventure with her best friend. Making it to San Francisco and back to Washington without their parents catching on isn’t a given, but one thing is for sure: this trip will change everything.

Book ACCIDENTAL AFRICAN BLESSINGS

Download or read book ACCIDENTAL AFRICAN BLESSINGS written by Ugo Nacciarone, SJ. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I pondered on a title for this book, I thought about my first life and work experience in Africa. How I suffered several severe cases of malaria, how difficult it was to adjust to the hot humid climate and the discouragements from my relatives and friends back home that I was in a wrong place to which I almost succumbed. The only thing that made me stay was a sense of duty to the other five Jesuits working with me. As this mission was only new I did not want to demoralize any of them. This decision has later proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. All that experience brought many turns to my life in Africa, bringing me from Nigeria to Zambia to Ghana and back to Zambia again. These events were like accidents. Accidents are unexpected, unplanned and often painful. It was just an accident of history that the mission was just getting started and that it bad so few people on it. It might have been another accident of history that the Biafran War began just as I made my way to Nigeria that made it more difficult to recruit new members to the mission.. These accidents of history brought me to a painful decision to return to Nigeria when I didn't feel attracted to the prospect. Yet, this painful experience turned out to be a great blessing for me. I came to love the people and the continent more than I could ever have imagined, and found myself greatly enriched by the experience. It is this development in personal growth that I want to share with the reader. Cover Design by Danny Chiyesu

Book An Accidental Theodicy

Download or read book An Accidental Theodicy written by Arvind Sharma and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly personal meditation on the nature and meaning of suffering. An adequate explanation of suffering is perhaps the most intractable issue in the study of religion and philosophy, and the answer to the question “Why me?” has eluded not only those who are the victims of suffering, but those who sympathize with them and try to understand and explain their suffering. In this highly personal account, Arvind Sharma shares his story of becoming the victim of a severe road accident and his gradual recovery from a fractured knee, which included a hospital stay, surgeries, unexpected setbacks, and a lengthy process of rehabilitation. In the second and most substantial part of the book, Sharma attempts to intellectually come to terms with his experience and to reflect on how the experience of suffering in one form or another is a universal condition of human existence. “This book reads like a spiritual handbook on the problems of suffering and evil, which can be overwhelming. It is filled with wisdom of various traditions on the viscous question of theodicy, but is balanced by sprightly humor. The difficult subject is made accessible through personal reflections and philosophical and religious insights. Once I started reading, I had to finish it—it was captivating and inspiring.” — Veena R. Howard, author of Gandhi’s Ascetic Activism: Renunciation and Social Action “This fascinating and highly personal book offers a rare window into how events in the lives of scholars can shape their work and worldview. It is a valuable contribution to the wider discourse on the embodied and embedded nature of scholarly work: that it does not occur in a vacuum or from some imagined ‘objective’ Archimedean standpoint.” — Jeffery D. Long, author of A Vision for Hinduism: Beyond Hindu Nationalism
