Download or read book Atomic Empire An A Technical History Of The Rise And Fall Of The British Atomic Energy Programme written by Charles N Hill and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain was the first country to exploit atomic energy on a large scale, and at its peak in the mid-1960s, it had generated more electricity from nuclear power than the rest of the world combined. The civil atomic energy programme grew out of the military programme which produced plutonium for atomic weapons. In 1956, Calder Hall power station was opened by the Queen. The very next year, one of the early Windscale reactors caught fire and the world's first major nuclear accident occurred. The civil programme ran into further difficulty in the mid-1960s and as a consequence of procrastination in the decision-making process, the programme lost momentum and effectively died. No nuclear power stations have been built since Sizewell B in the late 1980s.This book presents a study of Government papers that have recently become available in the public domain. For the first time in history, the research reactor programme is presented in detail, along with a study of the decision-making by the Government, the Atomic Energy Authority (AEA), and the Central Electricity Board (CEGB). This book is aimed at both specialists in nuclear power and the interested public as a technical history on the development and ultimate failure of the British atomic energy programme.

Book excerpt: Reissuing works originally published between 1961 and 1990, this set of 12 books offers a selection of scholarship on the history of natural resources. Many of the titles discuss the nuclear power debate from various angles while others look at coal, or resources and energy in the third world.
Download or read book Military Nuclear Accidents written by Jean-Claude Amiard and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of atomic energy for military purposes has given rise to a variety of nuclear accidents from the outset. This applies to all levels of use: from the manufacture of weapons to their commissioning. This book provides an overview of the potential impact of such accidents. The prospective consequences of local and global nuclear war are detailed. Similarly, for each accident, the environmental, ecological, health and socio-economic consequences are reviewed. The contamination of the environment and its fauna and flora is detailed and the effects of ionizing radiation are reported. The same is provided for human populations and the adverse effects on the health and physical and mental states of the populations concerned. The economic cost of accidents is also evaluated. The research presented in this book is based on scientifically recognized publications, and reports from the military forces of the various countries concerned and from the national and international organizations competent in this field (IAEA, WHO, UNSCEAR, IRSN, ICPR, etc.).
Download or read book Global Atmospheric Chemical Change written by C.N. Hewitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air pollution has historically been viewed as a local or regional scale problem with attention focused on acute episodes such as the sulphur dioxide and smoke smogs of London in the 1950s and 1960s and the photochemical smogs of southern California first recognized by Haagen Smit in the early 1950s. In recent years, however, it has become apparent that human activity has, and still is, changing the chemical composition of the atmosphere on a global scale. The composition of the atmosphere has seen enormous changes due to natural processes since the formation of the planet. Data obtained from air bubbles trapped in polar ice are beginning to reveal information about these changes over the last tens of thousands of years and geochemical models of the evolution of the Earth give us insights into the changes over much longer periods of time. Perhaps the crucial differences between these natural changes and those now being induced by man are their rel ative rates of change. The magnitude of present day fluxes of some com pounds released as air pollutants is in some cases much larger than those arising naturally. In other cases, for example carbon dioxide, the an thropogenic emission rates are small compared with that of the natural cycle, but the kinetics of the system are such that the steady state concent rations of the compounds in the atmosphere are now being perturbed.

Download or read book Nuclear Power Hazard Control Policy written by John C. Chicken and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Power Hazard Control Policy provides an analysis of the elements that influenced the development and type of policies on the hazard control of nuclear power in Britain. The book starts with an account of the nuclear hazards and its legal and administrative basis of control. A section of the book is focused on the creation and implementation of policies. The book analyzes some types of radiation and how it is released. The diseases that develop from certain exposure to radiation are also explained. The economic aspects of nuclear power utilization are discussed in detail. Some historical accounts of significance to the study are evaluated. Events such as the British bomb and the arrival of nuclear power are some of the events. The final chapter of the book discusses a possible policy- making system that considers the changes in the environment surrounding the system. The text is intended for legislators, lawyers, nuclear physicists, students, and researchers in the field of law.
