Book Biobased Industrial Products

Download or read book Biobased Industrial Products written by Committee on Biobased Industrial Products and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petroleum-based industrial products have gradually replaced products derived from biological materials. However, biologically based products are making a comeback--because of a threefold increase in farm productivity and new technologies. Biobased Industrial Products envisions a biobased industrial future, where starch will be used to make biopolymers and vegetable oils will become a routine component in lubricants and detergents. Biobased Industrial Products overviews the U.S. land resources available for agricultural production, summarizes plant materials currently produced, and describes prospects for increasing varieties and yields. The committee discusses the concept of the biorefinery and outlines proven and potential thermal, mechanical, and chemical technologies for conversion of natural resources to industrial applications. The committee also illustrates the developmental dynamics of biobased products through existing examples, as well as products still on the drawing board, and it identifies priorities for research and development.

Book Raw Materials for Future Energy Supply

Download or read book Raw Materials for Future Energy Supply written by Friedrich-W. Wellmer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book that analyses the future raw materials supply from the demand side of a society that chiefly relies on renewable energies, which is of great significance for us all. It addresses primary and secondary resources and substitution, not only from technical but also socioeconomic and ethical points of view. The “Energiewende” (Energy Transition) will change our consumption of natural resources significantly. When in future our energy requirements will be covered mostly by wind, solar power and biomass, we will need less coal, oil and natural gas. However, the consumption of minerals, especially metallic resources, will increase to build wind generators, solar panels or energy storage facilities. Besides e.g. copper, nickel or cobalt, rare earth elements and other high-tech elements will be increasingly used. With regard to primary metals, Germany is 100 % import dependent; only secondary material is produced within Germany. Though sufficient geological primary resources exist worldwide, their availability on the market is crucial. The future supply of the market is dependent on the development of prices, the transparency of the market and the question of social and ethical standards in the raw materials industry, as well as the social license to operate, which especially applies to mining. The book offers a valuable resource for everyone interested in the future raw material supply of our way of life, which will involve more and more renewable energies.

Book Ceramic Raw Materials

Download or read book Ceramic Raw Materials written by W E Worrall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic Raw Materials, Second Revised Edition points to the consideration that clay is the oldest ceramic raw material. The text outlines that clay can assume different forms in varying conditions and discusses the emergence of other materials that are now being considered as ceramic raw materials. The book presents a discussion on various raw materials other than clay, including silica, natural clays, and silicates such as kyanite, sillimanite, and andalusite. The text also presents an analysis of the composition of these materials, putting emphasis on their strengths and how different processes can alter these materials to form other materials. The varying properties of these materials in different stages are also discussed. The selection can serve as a reference to geologists who want to explore further raw materials other than clay, taking into consideration their potential uses. As clay and other related materials are discussed here, this book can also capture the interest of those involved in pottery and other related disciplines.

Book Materials and Sustainable Development

Download or read book Materials and Sustainable Development written by Michael F. Ashby and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, from noted materials selection authority Mike Ashby, provides a structure and framework for analyzing sustainable development and the role of materials in it. The aim is to introduce ways of exploring sustainable development to readers in a way that avoids simplistic interpretations and approaches complexity in a systematic way. There is no completely "right" answer to questions of sustainable development – instead, there is a thoughtful, well-researched response that recognizes concerns of stakeholders, the conflicting priorities and the economic, legal and social aspects of a technology as well as its environmental legacy. The intent is not to offer solutions to sustainability challenges but rather to improve the quality of discussion and enable informed, balanced debate. - Winner of a 2016 Most Promising New Textbook Award from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association - Describes sustainable development in increasingly detailed progression, from a broad overview to specific tools and methods - Six chapter length case studies on such topics as biopolymers, electric cars, bamboo, and lighting vividly illustrate the sustainable development process from a materials perspective - Business and economic aspects are covered in chapters on corporate sustainability and the "circular materials economy" - Support for course use includes online solutions manual and image bank
