More than 80% of the people are under sheer darkness and away from real development. When we talk and see of development, it is less than 20 % of the country. Historically and systematically large sections of the people were kept under darkness. Perhaps, they all used only their minds and lacked in their heart while trying to find solutions. The author in this book has attempted afresh some steps with a bottom up approach to achieve real development of all, especially the left-out 80%; and achieve comprehensive economic development across every nook and corner of the country. Book excerpt: The most widely published feature of Kudumbasree is the setting up of micro enterprises using local resources as well as skills. Micro enterprise development is viewed as an opportunity for providing gainful employment to the people below poverty line and thereby improving their income and living standards. Micro finance in India started in the early 1980s with small efforts or forming informal SHG to provide access to much needed saving and credit services to the marginal population more importantly in rural areas. National bodies like the Small Industrial development Bank of India (SIBI) and NABARD are devoting significant time and financial resource to micro finance sector. The main objectives of this study 1) to identify important applications of micro finance among members in Kudumbasree, 2) to find out whether micro finance influences economic development of women, 3) to get insight about micro finance activities. A well-structured questionnaire was prepared to collect primary data. The questionnaire for this study was developed partly on the basis of existing literature and partly from the opinion of experts in the field by keeping in mind the scope and objectives of the study. Through this study an attempt has been made to analyse the working system of NHG of Purappuzha panchayath. Kudumbasree unit has created an innovative method of mobilising rural savings that eventually helped for providing credit. The members admitted that their socio-economic status improved after joining this unit. NHG unit has brought the national and international recognition as an ideal and workable model of participatory development for eradicating poverty.

Book Financial Inclusion Through Micro Finance

Download or read book Financial Inclusion Through Micro Finance written by Suman P.M. and published by . This book was released on 2018-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the rapid spread of financial and banking system in India after Independence in 1947, a large segment of the society--particularly low-income households in rural areas--has very little access to financial services, both formal and semi-formal. As a consequence, many of them have to depend either on their own or high cost informal sources of finance, such as moneylenders. This is particularly true of the sporadic financial requirements of poor households for emergency purposes such as medical treatment. It is well-known that poor people, small entrepreneurs and other disadvantaged groups are presently excluded from the financial sector, which leads to their marginalisation and denial of opportunity to grow and prosper. Hence, financial inclusion of the disadvantaged and marginalized sections of society is a prerequisite for healthy and harmonious socio-economic development of India. Financial inclusion is the process of providing wide range of financial services and adequate credit in time to the weaker sections and low-income groups at an affordable cost. Merely having a bank account may not be a good indicator of financial inclusion. The essence of financial inclusion is to ensure that a range of appropriate financial services are available to every individual so that he/she may show his/her worth to the society. It has been widely accepted that micro finance is the most important tool of financial inclusion. Provisions of micro finance to the poor, especially women in rural areas, coupled with supporting activities like education, training and skill formation, can transform Indian economy on desired lines. Self-help groups (SHGs) represent a unique approach to financial intermediation. The approach combines access to low-cost financial services with a process of self-management and development. The present work is an attempt to emphasize the importance of financial inclusion of the poor and underlines the role of micro finance and SHGs in this endeavour.

Book An Economic Analysis of Microfinance Through Women Entrepreneurs

Download or read book An Economic Analysis of Microfinance Through Women Entrepreneurs written by D. Amutha and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The micro finance is agenda for empowering poor women. Micro enterprises are an integral part of planned strategy for securing balanced development of the economy of the poor women. Rural women's participation in agro-based activities is much more than what statistics reveal. The study was conducted with the following specific objectives; to evaluate the role of self Help Groups in women entrepreneurship in Vellapatti village. To assess the perception of beneficiaries about the role of SHGs. To evaluate the working of the SHGs in Vellapatti village. The present study is based on both primary and secondary data. Primary data have been collected by conducting a survey among 75 sample respondents from 9 Self Help Groups in different areas of Vellapatti village of Tuticorin town. Eight respondents were selected from each Self Help Group. Random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. Percentage analysis, averages, chi square test and probability analysis were used. The data relates to the month of April 2012. The study reveals that 17.33 percent of the sample respondent's suggestions to improve the performance of SHGs are to provide more loans, whereas 60 percent and 22.67 percent of the sample respondents' suggestion is to provide loan at right time and to provide loan at lesser rate of interest. Microfinance has been one of the few effective tools for poverty reduction over the past years. Through the creation of self help groups, poor people can safely deposit money and accumulate funds for future investments or emergencies as well as access loans for productive purposes leading to higher incomes. Women are participating in all the productive activities and are at par with men. Government, banks and other financial institutions should come forward to offer loans for rural women, so that women entrepreneurs' movement in India will work on right direction to empower more and more women in social, economical, cultural and in political matters.

Book Micro Finance An Innovative Tool for Inclusive Growth in India

Download or read book Micro Finance An Innovative Tool for Inclusive Growth in India written by V. Basil Hans and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there is a strong feeling around that globalisation is tapering there are also serious concerns about continuing marginalisation of sections of population in India. Millennium Development Goals, Human Rights Advocacy, Economic Empowerment and Inclusive Growth have, therefore, become watch (catch?) words today. Ever since Independence, India has considered that financial route is the safest one for a broad-based growth. The fast growth banking in general and that of rural banks, co-operatives and Self Help Groups (SHGs) should be seen in this context. To achieve the goal of inclusive growth micro-finance was introduced to meet small financial needs of the people with small means. It is a tool that can develop entrepreneurial activities, employment, economic growth, social cohesion, financial sustainability, eradicate poverty and promote human development. However, poverty is a huge and complex problem, and microfinance itself should grow from “transferring resources” to “transforming resources”. It has to be freed from the ongoing controversies of interest rates as well as from the problems of uneven spread etc and help SHGs take up “social intermediation” in the next phase. In this paper we discuss - (i) the opportunities and challenges faced by microfinance institutions in mobilising resources and enabling individuals and communities to overcome hurdles for more participative and productive growth; and (ii) the need for fostering new collaboration between institutions and people for good governance.

Book Financial Inclusion Self help Groups SHGs and Women Empowerment

Download or read book Financial Inclusion Self help Groups SHGs and Women Empowerment written by Kartick Das and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's lack of economic empowerment not only impedes growth and poverty reduction, but also negatively impacts education and health outcomes for children. Thus, it is extremely important to ensure that women are economically empowered. Financial inclusion may be defined as the process of ensuring access to financial services and timely and adequate credit - where needed by vulnerable groups, such as women - at an affordable cost. India's Self-help Group (SHG)-Bank Linkage Program was launched in 1992 as a flagship program by the country's National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. The objective is to meet the financial needs of the poor by linking SHGs with the formal credit agencies. Financial inclusion of India's women can be best ensured through SHGs. This collection contains papers that provide valuable insights into the importance and functioning of SHGs to ensure financial inclusion and hence economic empowerment of women in India.
