Book Climate Change and Food Security with Emphasis on Wheat

Download or read book Climate Change and Food Security with Emphasis on Wheat written by Munir Ozturk and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate Change and Food Security with Emphasis on Wheat is the first book to present the full scope of research in wheat improvement, revealing the correlations to global issues including climate change and global warming which contribute to food security issues. Wheat plays a key role in the health of the global economy. As the world population continuously increases, economies modernize, and incomes rise, wheat production will have to increase dramatically to secure it as a reliable and sustainable food source. Since covering more land area with wheat crops is not a sustainable option, future wheat crops must have consistently higher yields and be able to resist and/or tolerate biotic and abiotic stresses that result from climate change. Addressing the biophysical and socioeconomic constraints of producing high-yielding, disease-resistant, and good quality wheat, this book will aid in research efforts to increase and stabilize wheat production worldwide. Written by an international team of experts, Climate Change and Food Security with Emphasis on Wheat is an excellent resource for academics, researchers, and students interested in wheat and grain research, especially as it is relevant to food security. Covers a wide range of disciplines, including plant breeding, genetics, agronomy, physiology, pathology, quantitative genetics and genomics, biotechnology and gene editing Explores the effect of climate change on biotic stresses (stripe rust, stem rust, leaf rust, Karnal bunt, spot blotch) on wheat production and utilization of biotechnology Focuses on whole genome sequencing and next-generation sequencing technologies to improve wheat quality and address the issue of malnutrition in developing world

Book Easing Barriers to Movement of Plant Varieties for Agricultural Development

Download or read book Easing Barriers to Movement of Plant Varieties for Agricultural Development written by David Gisselquist and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Technical Paper No. 364. The trade policies of the countries of the Andean Group--Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela--are in the midst of rapid change, particularly in agriculture, where trade policies are being overhauled and trade rules rewritten on domestic, regional, and global levels. This paper highlights the trade options open to each country by looking at agricultural policy in light of general trade policy. The report also discusses the particular role the Andean Group is playing and how the trade pact may influence the liberalization of agricultural markets.

Book An empirical examination of the dynamics of varietal turnover in Indian wheat

Download or read book An empirical examination of the dynamics of varietal turnover in Indian wheat written by Vijesh Krishna and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the challenge of increasing the rate of varietal turnover to prevent depreciation of improved cultivars over time. It examines the supply of and demand for improved cultivars of wheat in India to illustrate this challenge in a unique manner, combining national-level data on breeder seed production with primary data on cultivar adoption. The analyses show that the rate of varietal turnover for wheat has slowed in India from an average of 9-10 years a decade ago to 13-14 years in 2010. By focusing on a sample of farmers and villages in Haryana, where seed and information networks are relatively well developed, the study finds that wheat farmers still prefer cultivars that were released 9-10 years ago.

Book Agricultural Technology

Download or read book Agricultural Technology written by Jock R. Anderson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major complex problems confront agricultural policy analysts and development specialists regarding the broad issue of 'agricultural technology.' These topics are reviewed in this volume which consists of 37 chapters, developed from papers presented at a conference held at Airlie House, Virginia, near Washington DC. The authors include leading international authorities from the academic sector, World Bank and agricultural research centers. The chapters are grouped into six parts. The first introductory part is followed by investment as the focus of Part II. In Part III a variety of conceptual and practical issues involved in the transfer of agricultural technology is considered. Part IV includes discussions of concrete technical matters ranging for example from the general to the specific, from plant to animal, and from soil management to irrigation engineering. Emphasis moves from the specifically technological to wider policy issues in Part V and this latter thrust is carried through into the final summarizing section.

Book Towards Responsible Plant Data Linkage Data Challenges for Agricultural Research and Development

Download or read book Towards Responsible Plant Data Linkage Data Challenges for Agricultural Research and Development written by Hugh F. Williamson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides the first systematic overview of existing challenges and opportunities for responsible data linkage, and a cutting-edge assessment of which steps need to be taken to ensure that plant data are ethically shared and used for the benefit of ensuring global food security – one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The volume focuses on the contemporary contours of such challenges through sustained engagement with current and historical initiatives and discussion of best practices and prospective future directions for ensuring responsible plant data linkage. The volume is divided into four sections that include case studies of plant data use and linkage in the context of particular research projects, breeding programs, and historical research. It address technical challenges of data linkage in developing key tools, standards and infrastructures, and examines governance challenges of data linkage in relation to socioeconomic and environmental research and data collection. Finally, the last section addresses issues raised by new data production and linkage methods for the inclusion of agriculture’s diverse stakeholders. This book brings together leading experts in data curation, data governance and data studies from a variety of fields, including data science, plant science, agricultural research, science policy, data ethics and the philosophy, history and social studies of plant science.
