Download or read book Needs of Foreign Students from Developing Nations at U S Colleges and Universities written by Motoko Y. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of Phase II was to conduct the national survey to assess the needs of foreign students from developing nations at U.S. colleges and universities and to compare importance and satisfaction of their needs by sponsorship categories (i.e. AID-sponsored vs. others) and other characteristics of students. A multi-stage cluster sample with probability proportionate to size was used to select schools and students in the nation, based on the sampling procedure determined in Phase I. Copies of the questionnaire developed in Phase I were mailed to students chosen in thirty universities. Nearly 1900 students responded to the questionnaire. In every category of needs, need were not satisfied to the level of students' expectations, even through most of the needs were satisfied to a certain degree rather than unsatisfied. Needs for practical experience (work experience and opportunities to apply knowledge), and anticipated post-return needs were among the least satisfied to the students' expectations and the most problematic ones for educational institutions to accommodate. Financial needs and pre-return informational needs were also least met to the students' expectations, however meeting these needs was less problematic.

Many college and university administrators are unaware of the initiatives of other nations to attract international students and of the need to support these students. Higher education journals have not focused much attention on international students. International Students: Strengthening a Critical Resource argues that U.S. institutions of higher education must increase their awareness of international student issues. Andrade reviews related research and highlights creative solutions and programming for the successful support of international students. The book provides practical, hands-on, broadly applicable solutions to addressing international student issues. Additionally, it serves as a practical guide for identifying and adopting best practices for serving international students.

Book Emerging International Issues in Student Affairs Research and Practice

Download or read book Emerging International Issues in Student Affairs Research and Practice written by Amber Manning-Ouellette and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors of Emerging International Issues in Student Affairs Research and Practice situate developing issues in student affairs through research, new and emergent methodologies, pedagogies, and practices. The text aims to encourage intercultural perspectives and opportunities across student affairs research and practice, while calling upon international student affairs practitioners, faculty, and staff to engage in international evidence-based research that provides a foundation toward a collective consensus of the field. To accomplish these goals, the editors invited predominant practitioners in student affairs practice and student affairs scholars from across the globe to engage in discourse, share their insights, and offer implications to the student affairs profession at the international level. The editors do this by dividing the text into two parts: Part I: Theoretical, Historical, Cultural, and Ideological Considerations in International Student Affairs and Part II: Emergent International Issues and Practice in Student Affairs. In Part I, the text addresses larger contexts, theories, and frameworks for understanding some of the most recent concerns and issues that have surfaced among international higher education leaders, student affairs professionals, and scholars. The section highlights discourse on directions and praxis that relate to the internationalization of student affairs and the resulting implications. Part II amplifies the larger international issues that have recently surfaced through the context of student affairs practice. International scholars and practitioners share timely concerns and matters that influence the profession on a global scale. This section highlights specific ways that practitioners can think about their work moving forward and implications that can shape research and the profession in the future. Collectively, these chapters represent a snapshot in time. Written early in the third decade of the 21st century, they emerge from one of the most distinctive—and some would say, one of the most unrelenting and tragic—recent periods of human history. The confluence of the pandemic and other global issues is exerting extensive pressure on higher education in general and the practice of student affairs in specific. Consequently, sustained, significant change seems inevitable. As a text within the series, International Perspectives on Educational Policy, Research and Practice—a series that aids to be a leading forum for global discussion on educational issues, urgent problems, successful experiences, and reflections from educational researchers and practitioners around the world—the editors believe the text is both timely and consequential.

Book International Indian Graduate Students Experiences with Academic Advising at a Public Research University in Texas

Download or read book International Indian Graduate Students Experiences with Academic Advising at a Public Research University in Texas written by Vandana Nandakumar and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A missing component in the current international student literature is how international Indian graduate students adjust academically and socially to a new learning environment and how academic advising influences international Indian graduate students' academic success and social adjustment. This qualitative study addresses this gap in the literature by using Rendón's (1994) validation theory and by drawing upon 11 students' lived experiences at a four-year public research university in the state of Texas. Four distinct themes emerged from the study's findings, such as international Indian graduate students' lack of understanding of academic advising, their perceptions of academic advising, supportive academic advising experiences, and challenging academic advising experiences. The study revealed that international Indian graduate students' understanding and perceptions of academic advising were different from their lived experiences. The results also highlight the role of an academic advisor in students' adjustment process as well as the importance of an academic advisor in making informed decisions related to academics. More importantly, guided by Rendón's validation theory, it was determined that participants' believed their supportive experiences with academic advising validates their academic success and social adjustment, while their challenging experiences with academic advising (in)validate their academic success and social adjustment. The larger international student experience research must continue to delve into ways in which colleges and universities across the United States can play a substantive role in better preparing and supporting international students prior to and after their arrival. To that end, colleges and universities must also better prepare academic advisors when serving international students and provide for increased support and infrastructure in the field of academic advising.
