Book Roma Health Rights in Macedonia Romania and Serbia

Download or read book Roma Health Rights in Macedonia Romania and Serbia written by Public Health Program (Open Society Institute) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the continent's largest and most neglected minority, Roma populations across Europe continue to live in conditions highly harmful to their health. Life expectancy among Roma is up to 10 years below average, their infant mortality rate is unacceptably high, and preventive health care is scarcely accessible to them. The Open Society Foundations (OSF) Initiative on Legal Advocacy for Roma Health Rights, launched in 2010 by the Law and Health Initiative (LAHI) and the Roma Health Project (RHP), aims to increase the capacity of NGOs in three focus countries -- Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia -- to carry out legal advocacy for Roma health and human rights. The Initiative's two guiding objectives are (i) to increase accountability for Roma rights violations in health care settings; and (ii) to address systemic impediments to Roma access to health care.

Book The Roma a Minority in Europe

Download or read book The Roma a Minority in Europe written by Roni Stauber and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The situation of the Roma in Europe, especially in the former communist states, is one of the more important human rights issues on the agenda of the international community, especially in the Euro-Atlantic bodies of integration. Within European states that have Roma populations there is a growing awareness that the matter must be confronted, and that there is a need for a concentrated effort to solve social problems and ease tensions between the Roma and the European nations among which they dwell. This volume is the result of an international conference held at Tel Aviv University in December 2002. The conference, one of the largest held among the academic community in the last decade, served as a unique forum for a multidisciplinary discussion on the past and present of the Roma in which both Roma and non-Roma scholars from various countries engaged.

Book Measuring Racial Discrimination

Download or read book Measuring Racial Discrimination written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-07-24 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many racial and ethnic groups in the United States, including blacks, Hispanics, Asians, American Indians, and others, have historically faced severe discriminationâ€"pervasive and open denial of civil, social, political, educational, and economic opportunities. Today, large differences among racial and ethnic groups continue to exist in employment, income and wealth, housing, education, criminal justice, health, and other areas. While many factors may contribute to such differences, their size and extent suggest that various forms of discriminatory treatment persist in U.S. society and serve to undercut the achievement of equal opportunity. Measuring Racial Discrimination considers the definition of race and racial discrimination, reviews the existing techniques used to measure racial discrimination, and identifies new tools and areas for future research. The book conducts a thorough evaluation of current methodologies for a wide range of circumstances in which racial discrimination may occur, and makes recommendations on how to better assess the presence and effects of discrimination.
