Book Absolute Versus Relational Discrimination of Intermediate Size in the Rhesus Monkey

Download or read book Absolute Versus Relational Discrimination of Intermediate Size in the Rhesus Monkey written by W. Lynn Brown and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine rhesus monkeys were successively trained and tested on two intermediate-size transposition problems. In problem 1, responses based on "relative" stimulus properties were opposed to chance behavior determined by "absolute" stimulus properties, and the subjects indicated significant learning of stimulus relationships. Problem 2 was designed in such a way that different non-chance behaviors should result from response to "absolute" and "relational" stimulus properties, and the subjects consistently reverted to choices based on "absolute" stimulus properties. It is concluded that rhesus monkeys learn both "absolute" and "relational" cues during training in a single stimulus-situation and that there is a strong tendency to respond to "absolute" stimulus values whenever feasible.

Book excerpt: An accessible synthesis of memory research that discusses the creation of memory representations, the processes of storage and retrieval, and the effectiveness of encoding information. The field of memory research is subdivided into many separate and non-overlapping topic areas that often employ specialized tools and models. This book offers an accessible synthesis of memory research that explores how memory works, how it is organized, and how it changes dynamically. Written by an expert in the field, it can be used by undergraduate and graduate students of psychology and as a reference by researchers who want to fill in gaps in their knowledge. The book focuses on three general topics that cover a vast amount of research in the field: how a memory representation is created, how the cognitive processes of storage and retrieval can be studied and measured, and the process of encoding information and its varying degrees of effectiveness. Specific subjects addressed include habituation and sensitization, and the neurobiological changes that underlie them; evidence for a cognitive component underlying Pavlovian conditioning; biological constraints on a cognitive model of memory; an information-processing framework for memory; misconceptions about memory, including the static memory myth and the permanent memory myth; model-based measurement of storage and retrieval processes; a critique of the concept of memory strength; the distinction between implicit and explicit memory; and learning and repetition. Although the writing is accessible to the nonspecialist, the density of information is high. The text avoids jargon, and a glossary defines key terms. The notes expand on technical details and point to interesting related ideas.

Book Transposition of Response to the Intermediate Size Stimulus in Rhesus Monkeys

Download or read book Transposition of Response to the Intermediate Size Stimulus in Rhesus Monkeys written by George Gentry and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight rhesus monkeys were trained to choose the intermediate of three different size stimuli. During transposition testing, stimuli were employed which favored no single choice based on 'absolute' stimulus values. When response eliciting values dependent on 'absolute' stimulus properties were balanced in this manner, sophisticated rhesus monkeys were observed to base responses on 'relational' properties of the test stimuli. Book The Perception of Stimulus Relations

Download or read book The Perception of Stimulus Relations written by Hayne W. Reese and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Perception of Stimulus Relations: Discrimination Learning and Transposition focuses on the processes, methodologies, and approaches involved in discrimination learning and transposition. The book first offers information on stimulus equivalence, transposition of paradigms, and the transposition and relation perception problems. The manuscript then examines measurement, training, subject, and test variables. Topics include stimulus and procedural variables, effect of direction of transposition test, phylogenetic comparisons, concept knowledge, and speed of original learning. The publication elaborates on form transposition, including transposition of visual forms and the meaning of form and form transposition. The text then takes a look at relational and absolute theories, summary of findings and evaluation of theories, and outline of a theory of transposition. Discussions focus on assumptions and basic deductions, effect of absolute stimulus components, effect of noticing change in stimuli from training to test, and stimulus similarity. The book is a valuable source of data for readers interested in discrimination learning and transposition.
