Book Ethics and the Future of Religion

Download or read book Ethics and the Future of Religion written by W. Royce Clark and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. Royce Clark observes that humanity appears to be jeopardizing our own future in a chaos of mutual antagonism and hypocrisy. Religions have traditionally provided ethical guidance, but because their absolutized metaphysics are incompatible with each other, we cannot rely on any one of them in a religiously pluralistic culture. The ethics of various religions are also built on theocratic or authoritarian foundations which are incompatible with any democratic society. Finally, many of their premises are very ancient, so not relevant or appropriate in our modern scientific world. The Western Enlightenment brought challenges against religion’s singularity, exclusivity, heteronomy, and anti-scientific assumptions, all of which disrupted their ethics and the Absolute metaphysical grounds upon which those ethics rested, raising the question of whether a “freestanding” ethic was possible. Inasmuch as the primary claim of most religions was regarded as beyond challenge, but was a conflation of history and myth, modern historical method created more doubt than certainty about such allegedly certain doctrines as “Jesus is the Son of God.” By the end of the 20th century, the impossibility of validating suchprimary Christological claims from a historical approach became evident, despite the articulate attempts at credibility in the brilliant works of John Dominic Crossan and Wolfhart Pannenberg, which remained unconvincing in important ways. Between 1832 and 2014, innovative Christian theologians such as Schleiermacher, Hegel, Tillich, and Scharlemann took a detour from the futility of historical verification. This study examines their remarkable attempts at a form of “corroboration” of the basic Christological claim, even if their primary interests were more in Christology than ethics. The question Clark takes up here is whether or not these figures have thereby provided a base for a universal ethic, or the only answer is for principles “freestanding” from any religion?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Absolute Religion: A View of the Absolute Religion, Based on Philosophical Principles and the Doctrines of the Bible This Volume, entitled the Absolute Religion, comprises some of the unpublished writings of Thomas C. Upham, deceased. An amanuensis had been engaged to copy his manuscripts, written with pencil, the day preceding an attack of paralysis, May 20th, 1871. This paralysis, causing blindness of one eye, and general debility, rendered him unable to give any farther attention to the work. A second attack of paralysis, as he was rising from his bed on the morning of March 10th, 1872, terminated his life April 2d 1872, six o'clock a.m., at the age of seventy three years. During these three weeks of prostration he was unable to articulate distinctly. The only connected sentence clearly understood is this: "My spirit is with God." Several chapters of the work were left partly written, and of other chapters, only the headings and leading thoughts remain. The fact that the author did not complete the work, must be received as an apology for any lack of completeness, in the outline, arrangement and finish of the work. Book The Absoluteness of Christianity and the History of Religions

Download or read book The Absoluteness of Christianity and the History of Religions written by Ernst Troeltsch and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1971-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this seminal work, pioneering theologian Ernst Troeltsch raises the question, how can we pass beyond the diversity with which history presents us to norms for our faith and for our judgments about life? He trenchantly probes the issue of how one religion--when viewed historically in the context of other world religions--can be universally and absolutely true. Though many others since have explored the issue of historical relativism and religious truth, few have done so with Troeltsch's determination and incisiveness, and for this he has made a lasting contribution to Christian theology and the philosophy of religion. The questions Troeltsch poses in this book remain utterly significant for the thoughtful Christian today. This reissue of a well-known classic includes a foreword by theological titan James Luther Adams.

Book Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine

Download or read book Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine written by Alan P. Lightman and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2018 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this meditation on religion and science, Lightman explores the tension between our yearning for permanence and certainty, and the modern scientific discoveries that demonstrate the impermanent and uncertain nature of the world. As a physicist, he has always held a scientific view of the world. But one summer evening, while looking at the stars from a small boat at sea he was overcome by the sensation that he was merging with a grand and eternal unity, a hint of something absolute and immaterial. This is his exploration of these seemingly contradictory impulses, and the journey along the different paths of religion and science that become part of his quest. -- adapted from publisher info.

Book An Introduction to Hegel s Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book An Introduction to Hegel s Philosophy of Religion written by Raymond K. Williamson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1984-06-30 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Hegel, thought is not philosophical if it is not also religious. Both religion and philosophy have a common object and share the same content, for both are concerned with the inherent unity of all things. Hegel's doctrine of God provides the means for understanding this fundamental relationship. Although Hegel stated that God is absolute Spirit and Christianity is the absolute religion, the compatibility of Hegel's doctrine of God with Christian theology has been a matter of continuing and closely argued debate. Williamson's book provides a significant contribution to this ongoing discussion through a systematic study of Hegel's concept of God. The book proceeds by investigating theism, atheism, pantheism, and panentheism as descriptions of Hegel's concept. It rejects the view that Hegel's doctrine so differs from Christian theology so as to be empty of religious content and thereby highlights some important considerations in contemporary theology.

Book Thought and Faith in the Philosophy of Hegel

Download or read book Thought and Faith in the Philosophy of Hegel written by J.E. Walker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this collection of papers is to introduce English speaking philosophers and theologians to something of the variety of the contemporary debate about the religious relevance of Hegel's thought. It is published in the hope that it will appeal not only to specialised students of Hegel's Philosophy of Religion but to a wide audience of scholars interested in Hegel's thought as a whole. The volume grew out of the 1987 Oxford conference on Thought and Faith in the Philosophy of Hegel, but has since developed beyond the confines of the original conference programme. The programme of the conference consisted of five major papers on different aspects of Hegel's religious thought and its reception, followed by a somewhat shorter commentary delivered by another scholar in the same field. This basic format has been retained, but a number of the commentaries have been extended or rewritten and an entirely new piece by Kurt Meist has been commissioned for the purpose of this collection. The volume includes studies of the Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion and the Phenomenology, as well as pieces dealing with the theological relevance of Hegel's philosophy of history and Kierkegaard's attack on Hegel. It con cludes with an examination of the relevance of Hegel's doctrine of absolute Spirit to the modern defence of his philosophy as a whole.
