Book excerpt: ABSOLUTE CORRUPTION Book Two in the bestselling Southern Justice Trilogy “Hold a door open for your girl, not because it’s expected of you, but because it gives you a moment to appreciate her as she walks ahead of you.” Austin Morgan left the safety of his home in Charleston, accepting a position in New York City to make a name for himself. He wanted to earn his reputation through hard work, inventive ideas, dedication, and not by the legacy or influence of his family’s name. His dedication to work leaves little time for a social life or the promises forgotten, creating the perfect opportunity for deception to reach its greedy hand out and grab ahold of this Southern born gentlemen. What will happen when he has to make an unexpected trip home and rediscovers what is really important? Will his eyes finally be opened to the deceit and misplaced trust of those around him? “Never let the fear of falling keep you from learning how to fly.” Lainie Perry has never backed down from a challenge her entire life. She has come to count on her wits and stamina in achieving her goals. She has left her fears and those who would prey upon them in the dust. What happens, though, when her latest adversary exists only in her mind? Can she win the battle when the imagined enemy is already dead? Or will she need to seek help for this struggle? Can these two find the help they need in each other? The answer is... Absolute Corruption, the second installment of the Southern Justice Trilogy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Acton (1834–1902) is often called a historian of liberty. A great historian and political thinker, he had a rare talent to reach beneath the surface and reveal the hidden springs that move the world. While endeavoring to understand the components of a truly free society, Acton attempted to see how the principles of self-determination and freedom worked in practice, from antiquity to his own time. But though he penned hundreds of papers, essays, reviews, letters and ephemera, the ultimate book of his findings and views on the history of liberty remained unwritten. Reading a book a day for years he still could not keep pace with the output of his time, and finally, dejected, he gave up. Today, Acton is mainly known for a single maxim, power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. In Power Tends to Corrupt, Christopher Lazarski presents the first in-depth consideration of Acton's thought in more than fifty years. Lazarski brings Acton's work to light in accessible language, with a focus on his understanding of liberty and its development in Western history. A work akin to Acton's overall account of the history of liberty, with a secondary look at his political theory, this book is an outstanding exegesis of the theories and findings of one of the nineteenth century's keenest minds.

Book Ibn B a Commentary on Aristotle s On Generation and Corruption

Download or read book Ibn B a Commentary on Aristotle s On Generation and Corruption written by Corrado la Martire and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ibn Bāğğa’s commentary on Aristotle’s On Generation and Corruption (Kitāb al-Kawn wa-l-fasād, Latin De generatione et corruptione) is one of the first commentaries to elaborate on the essential aspect of Aristotle’s text, that is, the analysis of change (μεταβολή, taġayyur). The commentary’s extant parts comprise a consecutive exposition of the contents of Aristotle’s work. However, the commentary may be read more as an introduction or a guide to the topic of generation than as a substitution for the original, as the paraphrases by Averroes seem to have become in the later tradition. The present study provides a new critical edition of the Arabic text and, for the first time, an English translation and a study of the structure of the commentary on the basis of the only two known manuscripts.

Book excerpt: Was the Roman emperor Caligula really the depraved despot of popular legend? In this book -- the first major reassessment of Caligula's life and career in over fifty. years -- Anthony A. Barrett draws on archaeological, numismatic, and literary evidence to evaluate this infamous figure in the context of the system that gave him absolute power.Authoritative ... highly readable. -- Bernard Knox, Atlantic MonthlyAn excellent study of the brief reign of Caligula....Barrett is a highly competent historian and clear writer, and the intrinsic interest of his subject is so great that the tougher kind of reader, as well as the scholar, will study this book with pleasure as well as with instruction. -- Hugh Lloyd-Jones, New York Review of BooksBarrett's Caligula fills a long-standing void in providing a balanced, thoroughly documented, and persuasive assessment of Caligula's life and career. This eminently readable book's value is further enhanced by the illustrations and by an appendix discussing Caligula's statuary and coinage. It will prove a welcome addition to the library of anyone with interests in Roman history and culture. -- Joseph J. Hughes, Classical WorldI do not think that any scholar interested in the Julio-Claudian period or any classics or ancient history library could be without this book. Very well written, it should also be popular with the general public. -- Colin M. Wells

Book The Principles of New Ethics IV

Download or read book The Principles of New Ethics IV written by Wang Haiming and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Descartes to Spinoza, Western philosophers have attempted to propose an axiomatic systemization of ethics. However, without consensus on the contents and objects of ethics, the system remains incomplete. This four-volume set presents a model that highlights a Chinese philosopher’s insights into ethics after a 22-year study. Three essential components of ethics are examined: meta-ethics, normative ethics, and virtue ethics. In this volume, the author analyzes the relationship between people’s sense of reputation, the political and economic status of a nation, and the observation of virtue ethics, and he argues that reputation can encourage people to conform to virtue ethics. In addition, a nation’s political and economic status is closely connected to people’s virtue ethics. That is, people will have higher virtue ethics when constitutional democracy, a market economy without government control, freedom of speech, and the moral system of liberalism and egalitarianism are established in a nation. This title is an essential read for students and scholars of ethics and philosophy in general.

Book IN THE IMAGE OF GOD OR NOT

Download or read book IN THE IMAGE OF GOD OR NOT written by Berl Harrell and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-07-05 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to us when we die, in detail? Why is it that Fallen Angels cannot be saved? Why did God create Mankind in the first place? Why are we unlike God in many ways since we are created in His image? Why did God allow Satan to tempt Adam and Eve, knowing it would cause such devastation? In the Image of God (Or Not) addresses and answers these questions. But more than just giving answers, In the Image of God (Or Not) unlocks and explores the reasons why God, Man, and Satan do the things they do and do not do the things we think they should do. This book clears up questions we have about the world we live in, how we came to be the way we are, and the ongoing spiritual battles we deal with every day. This book researches and illuminates the rationality why God is the way He is, why Satan hates Mankind, and why Mankind is in the middle of a constant battle between these two otherworldly beings, while adding some spiritual, down-to-earth logic of why along the way.
