But for the intervention of the angel, Abraham would have killed his son. Obedience to God take precedence over morality as humanly conceived. Yet, the angel of YHWH that appears to Abraham is a later addition to the text; thus, in the original narrative Abraham actually disobeys the divine command to slay his son, and sacrifices a ram instead. The first part of the book shows how the "original" version of the narrative did not contain the angelic figure. The second part of the book re-examines various religious interpretations of the text to show that exegetes such as Maimonides and his followers did point out Abraham's disobedience. According to these writers the esoteric layer of the story in fact declares that disobedience to God's command was Abraham's true affirmation of faith. In the third part of the book, Boehm re-opens the philosophical debate between Kant and Kierkegaard. Boehm concludes the book by contending that the monotheistic model of faith presented by Abraham was actually a model of disobedience.

As we have become increasingly adept at treating the major proximate causes of death in Western society, we have effectively converted acute illness into chronic malady. The last twenty years have witnessed a revolution in the treatment of acute coronary syndromes, myocardial infarction in particular. Patients who reach the hospital now have every expectation of leaving alive, but not necessarily well. Our ability to blunt the edge of ischemic insults has en gendered new problems: a new cohort of patients whose hearts function well enough to enable short-term survival, but at the cost of decreased ex ercise tolerance, dyspnea and increased long-term mortality. The irony is compounded by our increasingly sophisticated pharmacopeia for the treat ment of heart failure, which, by slowing the progression of ventricular dys function, has created a chronic illness. The fact of its chronicity makes heart failure no less deadly. In symptomatic patients, mortality exceeds 5-10% per year even with the best contemporary therapy. Not all heart failure is ischemic, of course, but the final common phenotype is eerily concordant regardless of the proximate cause. No wonder, then, that heart failure is the leading cause of hospitalization in America and in Western Europe and that the prevalence of the disease continues to rise. Drugs have indeed revolutionized heart failure therapy, ACE inhibitors and beta-adrenergic blockers having the most outstanding records to date.

The hallmark of the department is its diversified research that generates considerable synergistic effects that are manifested by many new techniques and concepts emanating from the laboratory during the last 20 years. Several of these are marketed by various biotechnology companies. At this meeting we therefore arranged for some of the world's leading experts in biochemistry and biotechnology to give lectures. The topics covered comprise enzyme technology, immobilization of enzymes and cells, abzymes, metabolic engineering, biosensors, and molecular recognition. The official gift from the symposium committee and the participants is this "Festschrift" which covers several important fields of research within the area of biochemical technology.
