Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and the Downfall of American Slavery IN writing this brief biography, I have been moved by a desire to give to the present generation who will never know aught of Abraham Lincoln but what is traditional, a life-like picture of the man as many men knew him. To do this, it has been necessary to draw material from various sources, to paint in a background Of the history of the times in which he lived, and to place the illustrious subject in his true relation, as far as pos sible, to the events in which he was so large a participant. SO far as I have been able, I have subordinated the events to the man. In the preparation of the work, I have been greatly helped by many authors; andi have been especially ln debted to the writings Of Colonel Ward H. Lamon, the Hon. Isaac N. Arnold, Dr. G. Holland, John G. Nicolay, and Colonel John Hay. It was my good fortune to know Lincoln with some degree of intimacy, our acquaintance beginning with the Fremont campaign of 1856, when I was a resident of Illinois, and continuing through the lincoln-douglas canvass, two years later. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections and Impressions of Abraham Lincoln Someone has said, That nation is death-stricken that ceases to reverence the memory of her great men. And so we in America are raising memorials to our Washingtons, our Lincolns, our Grants, our Roosevelts, and are commemorating their birth days. The British are doing the same for their great heroes. There is a good deal in common between our British cousins and ourselves. John Wesley was a Britisher but there are millions in our land to-day who also claim him as theirs. No man could possibly be more of an American than was Abraham Lincoln, but today he belongs to the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro in America, and the Ideal American Republic Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, was elected president of the United States. Many of the prominent politicians of the South professed to see in his election an act of hostility to slavery and an encroachment upon the rights of the Southern people, and they finally in duced a large number of the States to try to secede from the Union and form a confederate government. The fundamental principle of the secession movement was the doctrine of State rights: that every State of the Union had the right to secede whenever the people thought it best for their own interest. Book Portrait Life of Lincoln

Download or read book Portrait Life of Lincoln written by Francis Trevelyan Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portrait Life of Lincoln: Life of Abraham Lincoln, the Greatest American It is with pleasure that this volume is presented to the American people as a direct and original contribution to our national literature. As a collection of the famous portraits of Lincoln, taken from the greatest collections in the world and valued at more than $150,000, it alone would claim distinction. This is the first collection of all the known original photographs of Lincoln and represents years of research by the most eminent American collectors. It is, however, upon its graphic literary treatment that this volume must take its position as one of the most important books of the times. It is a book with a mission - and that mission is to revive in the homes of America the true spirit of Lincoln; that man of rugged honesty who said that "God must have loved the common people or he would not have made so many of them;" the man who "knew what it meant to start at the bottom and work to the top;" the man who "met misfortune face to face and overcame it with the might of manhood." Its psychological insight into human nature; its philosophical grasp on life and its opportunities; its appeal to the American heart and conscience, with its vigorous application of the principles of Lincoln to everyday life, inspire one with new courage and new ambition. Lincoln lives again in the pages of this volume, through the portraits and the word paintings that are masterpieces of literary art. It has been the desire of the publishers to make it a new American classic in which the generations may look upon Lincoln in the most dramatic situations in his life, feeling the impulse of a great heart and the inspiration of an indomitable will and resolute purpose. More books have been written about Lincoln than any other man in the world's history, but this is the first time that he has been brought before the people in the actual negatives for which he sat during his life and in text pictures in which he again moves among us. It has been the purpose of the publishers to present, in the fewest possible pages, a full acquaintance with Lincoln and an understanding of what such a man means to the world of humanity. It has further been desired to make this a complete unfolding of the vital events in his life. This has been accomplished by an interesting chronology in which the whole panorama of the growth of the nation, during the life of Lincoln, is presented. The volume further includes the nine great speeches upon which Lincoln rose to the highest political honor within the gift of the American people. These, with a record of the celebrated Lincoln Collections in America, and the hundred greatest books on Lincoln, fulfill its title as the "Portrait Life of Lincoln," and give it immediate position as the first authoritative handbook on Lincoln. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: The Ideal Christian It has been said of Abraham Lincoln, the humble backwoodsman who rose to be'the world's greatest governor and emancipator, that he was the m0st perfect Christian ideal outside of Bible characters. Too often ourgreat leaders limit themselves I') a certain nation or race, but this cannot be said of the two characters from whom we will try and draw some delightful and interesting comparisons. Jesus was a Jew, but more than a Jew; Lincoln was an American, but more than an American. They were what the Bible calls true Israelites and that includes all people who worship Abraham's God, regardless of nationality or color. Already, for every biographical purpose, he is the actual president: already he has become the cynosure; already the eyes of men are fixed on him. And in his person is presented for the admiration of civilized nations a spectacle, the simple grandeur of which is far more impressive to the thoughtful mind than all the pomp and pageantry of emperor and king. Book Memories of Lincoln and the Splintering of American Political Thought

Download or read book Memories of Lincoln and the Splintering of American Political Thought written by Shawn J. Parry-Giles and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Civil War, Republicans and Democrats who advocated conflicting visions of American citizenship could agree on one thing: the rhetorical power of Abraham Lincoln’s life. This volume examines the debates over his legacy and their impact on America’s future. In the thirty-five years following Lincoln’s assassination, acquaintances of Lincoln published their memories of him in newspapers, biographies, and edited collections in order to gain fame, promote partisan aims, champion his hardscrabble past and exalted rise, and define his legacy. Shawn Parry-Giles and David Kaufer explore how style, class, and character affected these reminiscences. They also analyze the ways people used these writings to reinforce their beliefs about citizenship and presidential leadership in the United States, with specific attention to the fissure between republicanism and democracy that still exists today. Their study employs rhetorical and corpus research methods to assess more than five hundred reminiscences. A novel look at how memories of Lincoln became an important form of political rhetoric, this book sheds light on how divergent schools of U.S. political thought came to recruit Lincoln as their standard-bearer.
