Book excerpt: Excerpt from About Edwin Drood These pages do not pretend to fill by conjecture the gaps in Charles Dickens' unfinished story. It is certain that he had bestowed especial pains upon the structure of his plot, and that he was anxious to keep his secret till the right moment came for its disclosure. This being so, I do not believe that any ingenuity of conjecture can supply what Dickens did not live to write. But the fragment which we possess has always seemed to me a masterpiece: and. thus thinking, I attempt, not to add to what Dickens has left to us, but to make clear and definite so much of the story as is covered by the twenty-three extant chapters, and to elucidate certain details which seem to me to have been misunderstood or overlooked. I am moved to do this by the publication of Mr J. Cuming Walters' Clues to Dickens's "Mystery of Edwin Drood" and Mr Andrew Lang's Puzzle of Dickens's Last Plot, works which, inasmuch as they deal comprehensively and minutely with the extant fragment, invite criticism and assist reconstruction. Book Mystery of Edwin Drood Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mystery of Edwin Drood Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Charles Dickens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mystery of Edwin Drood, Vol. 2 For some wise purpose, no doubt, the Creator saw fit to place upon the earth a class of people who regard every thing they do or say as perfectly right and proper, and every thing other folks do or say as all wrong. They have a su preme Opinion of their own ideas, and a poor opinion of other people's. Such persons always appear bareheaded in the argumentative field, and have no difficulty in finding a hat which will fit them nicely, even though it may not be so pleas ant to wear. It would be supposed, however, that, after selecting the hat and putting it on voluntarily, they would be content to wear it, or discard it, and say nothing; but, in stead, they go howling about, disgusted with themselves, 'and making everybody else disgusted. With them. In Mr. Dickens' Preface to this book, which was published as an extract, will be found, figuratively speaking, two hats, -0ne labeled owl-like wisdom, and the other ignorant bigots, and it was highly edifying to observe with what ease the above mentioned class of individuals discovered that those hats would fit them. This fact leads me to believe that there is a class of people in the world who will admit, - whatever they think of the other characters in this work, - that the character of Mr. Sapsea is not overdrawn. To give the reader some idea of the ridiculous statements that were made concerning the authorship of this work, and which, - notwithstanding they were far more unreasonable than the true statement which affirmed this book to be the pro duction of a spirit-pen, - were accepted as facts by quite a number of persons, I will cite one or two of them in this Preface. Book Clues to Dicken s Mystery of Edwin Drood Classic Reprint

Download or read book Clues to Dicken s Mystery of Edwin Drood Classic Reprint written by J. Cuming Walters and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clues to Dicken's Mystery of Edwin Drood" To anticipate and to meet the criticism that so large a volume is not warranted by the subject, it may be urged that not only has an endeavour been made to elucidate the series of mysteries in "Edwin Drood," but other solutions have been examined, and Dickens's methods of work analysed. The object has been so to arrange the arguments that they lead to one irresistible conclusion, and it is only by such a process that the truth is likely to be elicited. Those who begin with a theory may find passages to support it; but in this instance the essential passages are found first and then made to yield their secret. As it is so long since a serious attempt was made to uplift or to penetrate the veil which Dickens had cast over "Edwin Drood" one more attempt, on entirely new lines, may not be deemed unworthy of notice. A completion of the story is not offered. Here are only "clues" which may justly and with a good object be seized upon in the endeavour to understand and to arrive at the inner design of a labyrinthine plot. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Murder of Edwin Drood Recounted by John Jasper: Being an Attempted Solution of the Mystery Based on Dickens Manuscript and Memoranda Droodists, and it is for these that scientific efforts to solve the problem, Of which Mr. Carden's is one, have their chief interest and attraction. Although the one and true solution may never definitely be discovered, there is no doubt that every fresh study of the book reveals something helpful towards that end, and for that reason has its particular valiie. In this way, one point, hitherto debatable, has been established with sufficient surety to put it beyond doubt: John Jasper actually murdered his nephew. Mr. Carden starts Off from that hypothesis, and I am naturally in complete agreement with him on that point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Great Mystery Solved: Being a Continuation of and Conclusion to the Mystery of Edwin Drood, (Ran Unfinished Won or Charles Dickens) Canon, whose tiny, timid mother kept house for him there, and was as dainty as a little china shepherdess, a figure which she oddly suggested. Very proud was she of her seventh and only surviving son, and he, in his stalwart manhood, no less so of his frail little ma. It takes all sorts to make a world, and in the small one of the Cathedral and its precincts Durdles, the drunken stonemason, was fairly conspicuous, with his dinner bundled into a handkerchief and carried about all day and every day. A satellite of his was Deputy, a hideous small lad employed at a common lodging house, whom he had hired to pelt him home with stones in case he was out too late in his cups, the bargain being that first he was to have a widdy widdy warning in the form of some doggerel verse. Durdles always spoke of himself in the third person, and his hobby was to go about tapping tombs and walls with his hammer, the answering sound telling him many things dulled to less sensitive ears. Even in sleepy Cloisterham events out of the common would happen occasionally, such as the arrival from Ceylon of Neville and Helena Landless, brother and sister, orphaned and of neglected up-bringing, so that the girl was to go to Miss Twinkle ton and the youth to Mr. Crisparkle, for the bettering of their education. Both were dark and remarkably handsome, and both had been hurt to the soul by the harsh treatment of a conscienceless step-father. Edwin and Neville met, and a mutual dislike was not long in manifesting itself. The newcomer resented Drood's cavalier treatment of Rosa, with whom he himself was at sight in. Love. At a meeting brought about by John Jasper, with the avowed idea of a recon ciliation, high words passed between the young fellows.
