Book excerpt: To what extent can the leaky, porous bodies in Philip Roth's fiction be read as symbols of resistance against anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and racism? Philip Roth and the Body questions the symbolic functionality of the corporeal in Roth's main works of fiction, particularly as sites of gender and racial identification for Roth's protagonists. In his recurrent employment of the abject, Roth throws into doubt the body as a coherent, stable entity, undermining his male characters' determinations of gendered and racial otherness through his porously unstable bodies. Joshua Lander draws on the work of Zygmunt Bauman and his theory of the 'conceptual Jew' to argue that Roth's fiction is yoked together by a shared interest in how anti-Semitic stereotypes of Jewish difference – centered around the body – pervasively inform American Jewish identities. The book also contends that Roth resists American white nationalism by transforming the body's ejaculations, excretions, secretions, and expulsions into symbols of difference that he repeatedly ties to Jewishness. At the same time, this study highlights how Roth's novels, through his focus on Jewish men, risk the reification of America's sexist social structures as they intersect with the very racism Roth seeks to undermine. Philip Roth and the Body's examination of how bodies in Roth's fiction are entities troubled within his prose renews conversations about whose bodies matter, both in Roth studies and in the context of America's racial and social politics.

During this period, the American national territory expanded beyond its continental borders to islands in the Pacific and the Caribbean. Simultaneously, new technologies of vision emerged for imagining the human body, including the moving camera, stereoscopes, and more efficient print technologies for mass media. Rather than focusing on canonical American authors who wrote at the time of U.S. imperialism, this book examines abject texts--images of naked savages, corpses, clothed native elites, and uniformed American soldiers--as well as bodies of writing that document the good will and violence of American expansion in the Philippine colony. Contributing to the fields of American studies, Asian American studies, and gender studies, the book analyzes the actual archive of the Philippine-American War and how the racialization and sexualization of the Filipino colonial native have always been part of the cultures of America and U.S. imperialism. Book excerpt: Vision, Technology and Subjectivity in Mexican Cyberpunk Literature interrogates an array of cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk science fiction novels and short stories from Mexico whose themes engage directly with visual technologies and the subjectivities they help produce – all published during and influenced by the country’s neoliberal era. This book argues that television, computers, and smartphones and the literary narratives that treat them all correspond to separate-yet-overlapping scopic regimes within the country today. Amidst the shifts occurring in the country’s field of vision during this period, the authors of these cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk narratives imagine how these devices contribute to producing specular subjects—or subjects who are constituted in large measure by their use and interaction with visual technologies. In doing so, they repeatedly recur to the posthuman figure of the cyborg in order to articulate these changes; Stephen C. Tobin therefore contends that the literary cyborg becomes a discursive site for working through the problematics of sight in Mexico during the globalized era. In all, these “specular fictions” represent an exceptional tendency within literary expression—especially within the cyberpunk genre—that grapples with themes and issues regarding the nature of vision being increasingly mediated by technology.
