Book Radical Media

Download or read book Radical Media written by John D. H. Downing and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2000-08-18 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an entirely new edition of the author′s 1984 study (originally published by South End Press) of radical media and movements. The first and second sections are original to this new edition. The first section explores social and cultural theory in order to argue that radical media should be a central part of our understanding of media in history. The second section weaves an historical and international tapestry of radical media to illustrate their centrality and diversity, from dance and graffiti to video and the internet and from satirical prints and street theatre to culture-jamming, subversive song, performance art and underground radio. The section also includes consideration of ultra-rightist media as a key contrast case. The book′s third section provides detailed case-studies of the anti-fascist media explosion of 1974-75 in Portugal, Italy′s long-running radical media, radio and access video in the USA, and illegal media in the dissolution of the former Soviet bloc dictatorships.

Book The Dictionary of Alternatives

Download or read book The Dictionary of Alternatives written by Doctor Martin Parker and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'There is no alternative to free market liberalism and managerialism', is the orthodoxy of the twenty-first century. All too often, ordinary people across the world are being told that the problem of organization is already solved, or that it is being solved somewhere else, or that it need not concern them because they have no choices. This dictionary provides those who disagree with the evidence. Using hundreds of entries and cross-references, it proves that there are many alternatives to the way that we currently organize ourselves. These alternatives could be expressed as fictional utopias, they could be excavated from the past, or they could be described in terms of the contemporary politics of anti-corporate protest, environmentalism, feminism and localism. Part reference work, part source book, and part polemic, this dictionary provides a rich understanding of the ways in which fiction, history and today's politics provide different ways of thinking about how we can and should organize for the coming century.

Book The Old World Is Behind You

Download or read book The Old World Is Behind You written by Karen Goaman and published by . This book was released on 2007-01-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthropology of the Situationist influence on contemporary anarchism, The Old World is Behind You places the debates around Situationism in context and examines their milieu. By examining in close ethnographic detail the texts and practices of post-Situationist anarchism, this book traces that oppositional impulse through to today's movements. Combining carefully selected, hard-to-find, documents with first-hand experience and interviews with people in the post-Situationist milieu, Goaman's work shows the lived world of Situationist-themed anarchism. Building on traditional anthropological methodology, this book also develops an important critique of the way anthropology is done and points to ways in which an anarchist-influenced anthropology can arise.

Book excerpt: Year after year millions of people pitch into a growing whirlwind of activity in preparation for just one day - 25th of December. Many of those who join in the excitement have at least some idea that this particular date is called Christmas Day because it celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ about 2000 years ago - yet have no idea why for millions of people worldwide it has become the greatest highlight of the year. It is time to ask some questions. Who was this Jesus? Do we actually know when he was born? Was there a special purpose in his birth? Is there anything that marks him out as being different from the other 60 billion people in human history? How can the few years he spent here have any possible relevance for people living in the 21st first century? Why should we bother to find out? In this lively booklet John Blanchard strips away the myths and tells it like it is. Here is the real story, the dynamic truth that over the centuries has revolutionised countless lives. Read it carefully. If you get the message, no Christmas Day will ever be the same for you again - nor will any other day!

Book Anarchism Marxism and the Future of the Left

Download or read book Anarchism Marxism and the Future of the Left written by Murray Bookchin and published by AK Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murray Bookchin has been a dynamic revolutionary propagandist since the 1930s when, as a teenager, he orated before socialist crowds in New York City and engaged in support work for those fighting Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Now, for the first time in book form, this volume presents a series of exciting and engaged interviews with, and essays from, the founder of social ecology. This expansive collection ranges over, amongst others, Bookchin's account of his teenage years as a young Communist during the Great Depression, his experiences of the 1960s and reflections on that decade's lessons, his vision of a libertarian communist society, libertarian politics, the future of anarchism, and the unity of theory and practice. He goes on to assess the crisis of radicalism today and defends the need for a revolutionary Left. Finally, he states what is to be valued in both anarchism and Marxism in building such a Left and offers guidelines for forming a new revolutionary social movement.

Book The Messianic Character of American Education

Download or read book The Messianic Character of American Education written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rushdoony's study tells us an important part of American history: exactly what has public education been trying to accomplish? Before the 1830s and Horace Mann, no schools in the U.S. were state supported or state controlled. They were local, parent-teacher enterprises, supported without taxes, and taking care of all children. They were remarkably high in standard and were Christian. From Mann to the present, the state has used education to socialize the child. The school's basic purpose, according to its own philosophers, is not education in the traditional sense of the 3 R's. Instead, it is to promote "democracy" and "equality," not in their legal or civic sense, but in terms of the engineering of a socialized citizenry. Public education became the means of creating a social order of the educators design. Such men saw themselves and the school in messianic terms. This book was instrumental in launching the Christian school and homeschool movements.

Book Small Towns Austere Times

Download or read book Small Towns Austere Times written by Steve Hanson and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores small town austere Britain. The text argues for a return to both dialectical thinking and politicized community research, in light of the current 'austere' landscape, in order to intellectually militate against centre-right think tanks. It also urges for a kind of epistemological anarchism, which refuses to view the small towns which are the subject of the book through existing 'common sense' paradigms, particularly those of state and capital, but also those of cosy localism.

Book The Institutes of Biblical Law Vol 3

Download or read book The Institutes of Biblical Law Vol 3 written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's law is much more than a legal code; it is a covenantal law. It establishes a personal relationship between God and man." The first section summarizes the case laws. The author tenderly illustrates how the law is for our good, and makes clear the difference between the sacrificial laws and those that apply today. The second section vividly shows the practical implications of the law. The examples catch the reader's attention; the author clearly has had much experience discussing God's law. The third section shows that would-be challengers to God's law produce only poison and death. Only God's law can claim to express God's "covenant grace in helping us."
