Book Aberrations of Optical Systems

Download or read book Aberrations of Optical Systems written by W.T Welford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the subject of optical design as a branch of applied physics is over one hundred years old, the use of aberration theory has changed considerably. Aberrations of Optical Systems covers elementary optics and aberration theory of various optical systems, including the use of nonaxially symmetric systems and diffractive optical elements in complex designs, such as head-up displays and the increasing use of scanning systems with laser illumination. The book provides the complete range of mathematical tools, formulae, and derivations needed for understanding the process of optical design and for planning optical design programs. While the treatment is mainly based on geometrical optics, some excursions into physical optics are made, particularly in connection with the problems of optical tolerances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Metrology is a rapidly expanding field i'n both its scientific foundations and technological developments, being of major concern to measurements, quality control, non-destructive tes ting and in fundamental research. In order to define the state-of-the-art, and to evaluate pre sent accomplishments, whilst giving an appraisal of how each of the particular topics will evolve the Optical Metrology-anAdvancedStudy Institute was organized with a concourse of the world's acknowledged experts. Thus, the Institute provided a forum for tutorial reviews blended with topics of current research in the form of a progressive and comprehensive presentation of recent promising developments, lea ding techniques and instrumentation in incoherent and coherent optics for Metrology, Sensing and Control in Science, Industry and Biomedici ne. Optical Metrology is a very broad field which is highly inter disciplinary in its applications, and in its scientific and technolo gical background. It is related to such diverse disciplines as physi cal and chemical sciences, engineering, electronics, computer scien ces, biological sciences and theoretical sciences, such as statistics. Although there was an emphasis on photomechanics and industri al applications, a marked diversity was reflected in the different background and interests of the participants. The vitality and viabi lity of the discipline was enhanced not only by the encouraging number of young scientists and industrialists participating and authoring, but also by the remarkably promising prospects found in x the practical applications supported by advanced electronic hybridi zation.

Book Aberration Theory Made Simple

Download or read book Aberration Theory Made Simple written by Virendra N. Mahajan and published by SPIE Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clear, concise, and consistent exposition of what aberrations are, how they arise in optical imaging systems, and how they affect the quality of images formed by them. The emphasis of the book is on physical insight, problem solving, and numerical results, and the text is intended for engineers and scientists who have a need and a desire for a deeper and better understanding of aberrations and their role in optical imaging and wave propagation. Some knowledge of Gaussian optics and an appreciation for aberrations would be useful but is not required.

Book The Symmetrical Optical System Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Symmetrical Optical System Classic Reprint written by George Coton Steward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symmetrical Optical System N the following tract is given an outline of the theory of the Sym Imetrical Optical System, both from the purely geometrical and also from the physical point of view. The first few chapters are based upon a course of lectures delivered to students of mathematics and of physics and the interest, to this extent, is theoretical; but the methods employed lend themselves readily to the computation of actual optical systems, and in Chapter V are given formulae used in optical calculations: it is hoped that these will be of practical interest. The treatment is based upon the Characteristic Function of Hamilton or else upon one of its modifications, the Eikonal; for, in my Opinion, such a function offers by far the most powerful method of examining the behaviour of optical systems, whether from the theoretical or from the practical point of view. The geometrical meaning of the various aberrations is considered, both those of the first order and also those of higher orders, together with the more important of the Optical Conditions such, for example, as the recent Optical Cosine Law, of which the well-known sine-condition is but a particular case. And, inasmuch as the effect of the geometrical aber rations is very largely masked by diffraction phenomena, an account is given of the diffraction patterns associated with the optical system and the modifications of them due to these geometrical aberrations; moreover in addition to the usual circular aperture other forms of aperture' also are considered, namely, the annular aperture, the slit aperture and the semi-circular aperture. I am greatly indebted to Mr T. Smith, of the Optical Department of the National Physical Laboratory, for his kindness in reading the proofs of the tract; and I should like to record here my gratitude to him for his kindly encouragement in optical work and for many pleasant hours spent at the Laboratory.
