Most of my clothes don't fit me anymore. S: I know the feeling. I'd like to lose some weight, too. R: Hey, why don't we make a change together? S: Do you mean like a New Year's resolution? R: Yes. Let's promise to get in shape. Maybe we can even join a gym. S: That's a good idea. We can also cut out junk food. R: Oh, that's going to be hard for me, but I promise to try. S: Great! It's time to treat our bodies better. Part B: For Finances Miranda and Robert are talking about their resolutions for the new year. (Miranda = M ; Robert = R) M: Guess what! I made a New Year's resolution to spend less money. R: Really? My resolution is to cut spending, too. M: Nice! What steps are you going to take? R: I have credit card debt. So, I cut all my cards to stop me from using them. M: You did that already? That's very brave of you. R: If I don't act right away, I will wait and may never take action. M: I see. Well, I plan to put half of my pay in the bank every month. R: That's very smart of you. Part C: For Learning and Development Tony and Martha are sharing their New Year's resolutions. (Tony = T ; Martha = M) T: Did you make any New Year's resolutions this year? M: Yes. My resolution is to learn to ride a bicycle. T: Good for you! I know you're really afraid of falling, so it's not going to be easy. M: I know. How about you? Any resolutions? T: Yes! I'm going to focus more on my life and less on my job. M: That's good! You're really hardworking, but you always work way too much. T: Yeah, so I'm going to spend more time on my hobbies and interests. M: I'm really glad to hear that!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of online dating, race-based discrimination is not only tolerated, but encouraged as part of a pervasive belief that it is simply a neutral, personal choice about one's romantic partner. Indeed, it is so much a part of our inherited wisdom about dating and romance that it actually directs the algorithmic infrastructures of most major online dating platforms, such that they openly reproduce racist and sexist hierarchies. In Not My Type: Automating Sexual Racism in Online Dating, Apryl Williams presents a socio-technical exploration of dating platforms' algorithms, their lack of transparency, the legal and ethical discourse in these companies' community guidelines, and accounts from individual users in order to argue that sexual racism is a central feature of today's online dating culture. She discusses this reality in the context of facial recognition and sorting software as well as user experiences, drawing parallels to the long history of eugenics and banned interracial partnerships. Ultimately, Williams calls for, both a reconceptualization of the technology and policies that govern dating agencies, and also a reexamination of sociocultural beliefs about attraction, beauty, and desirability.

Book Justice and Cities

Download or read book Justice and Cities written by Mark Davidson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores different theories of justice and explains how these connect to broader geographical questions and inform our understanding of urban problems. Since philosophers like Socrates debated in the ancient agora, cities have prompted arguments about the best ways to live together. Cities have also produced some of the most vexing moral problems, including the critical question of what obligations we have to people we neither know nor affiliate with. The first part of this book outlines the most well-developed answers to these questions: the justice theories of Utilitarianism, Libertarianism, Liberalism, Marxism, Communitarianism, Conservativism, and recent "post" critiques. Within each theory, we find a set of geographical propensities that shape the ways purveyors of the theories see the city and its moral problems. The central thesis of the book is therefore that competing moral theories have distinct geographical concerns and perspectives, and that these propensities often condition how the city and its injustices are understood. The second part of the book features three studies of contemporary urban problems – gentrification, segregation, and (un)affordability – to demonstrate how predominant justice theories generate distinctive moral and geographical interpretations. This book therefore serves as an urbanist’s guide to justice theory, written for undergraduates and postgraduates studying human geography, urban and municipal planning, urban theory and urban politics, sociology, and politics and government.

Focusing on Chinese, Russian, and American decisions about COVID-19 aid, this book illuminates the role of historically contingent ideas in donors’ decisions. Drawing on the theoretical insights of the critical geopolitics tradition, it advances and tests explanations for aid-related decisions on a novel global dataset of COVID-19 aid. Rigorously theorized, meticulously researched, and accessibly written, this book illuminates the ways in which China and Russia seek to reshape the humanitarian field consistent with their geopolitical visions. Do authors such as Christos Tsiolkas, Dennis Altman and Andrea Goldsmith think we're more tolerant than we once were? Are writers such as Lee Kofman, Rochelle Siemienowicz and Jinghua Qian optimistic about the future? Do terms such as LGBTQIA+ help or hinder meaningful progress? How does transitioning now compare to transitioning in the 1990s? How does 'queerness' affect notions of parenthood? Do therapists and psychologists still operate from a straight-white-male perspective and how can new practitioners such as popular psychologist and author Chris Cheers change that? Entertaining, insightful, funny and thought-provoking, Prudish Nation adjusts the country's bedside lamp to show us a little more clearly who and what we really are.

Book Consent Stealthing and Desire Based Contracting in the Criminal Law

Download or read book Consent Stealthing and Desire Based Contracting in the Criminal Law written by Brianna Chesser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consent, Stealthing and Desire-Based Contracting in the Criminal Law examines the inconsistencies in the definitions of consent in sexual encounters by examining emerging sex crimes alongside changing community values and the changing legal definitions of consent in sexual offending, focusing on common law and civil law countries. This book distinguishes itself through the use of empirically validated research strategies and an in-depth analysis of current legislative regimes. It argues that desire and pleasure are largely ignored by legal consent definitions, despite its importance in sexuality more broadly. Using two case studies of emerging forms of sexual offending, the criminalisation of sadomasochistic sexual practices and the offence of ‘stealthing’, it examines how the law is both a blunt and under-utilised instrument in the policing of people’s sexual relationships. The presence or absence of consent can change a lawful sexual act between two people into a serious crime with potentially devastating consequences to both survivor and offender. Yet there remains no consistent definition of consent applied within and between legal jurisdictions across the world. A comparative analysis reveals parallels between common law countries and civil law countries. The book also provides a brief history of the use of term consent in relation to sexual offending and examines definitional and sociological requirements of conceptual consent across history. Covering jurisdictions in the US, UK, and Australia, providing an innovative resource on issues relating to consent presented in an accessible way, this book will appeal to students and researchers of criminal justice, criminal law, criminology, sociology and gender studies.

Download or read book Data and Democracy at Work written by Brishen Rogers and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of how major companies have used advanced information technologies to limit worker power, and how labor law reform could reverse that trend. As our economy has shifted away from industrial production and service industries have become dominant, many of the nation's largest employers are now in fields like retail, food service, logistics, and hospitality. These companies have turned to data-driven surveillance technologies that operate over a vast distance, enabling cheaper oversight of massive numbers of workers. Data and Democracy at Work argues that companies often use new data-driven technologies as a power resource—or even a tool of class domination—and that our labor laws allow them to do so. Employers have established broad rights to use technology to gather data on workers and their performance, to exclude others from accessing that data, and to use that data to refine their managerial strategies. Through these means, companies have suppressed workers' ability to organize and unionize, thereby driving down wages and eroding working conditions. Labor law today encourages employer dominance in many ways—but labor law can also be reformed to become a tool for increased equity. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent Great Resignation have indicated an increased political mobilization of the so-called essential workers of the pandemic, many of them service industry workers. This book describes the necessary legal reforms to increase workers' associational power and democratize workplace data, establishing more balanced relationships between workers and employers and ensuring a brighter and more equitable future for us all.
