Book The Heads of Religious Houses

Download or read book The Heads of Religious Houses written by David Knowles and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-08-09 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of two volumes, now covering the heads of religious houses in England and Wales from the tenth-century reform to the death of Edward III, 940–1377. This first volume, by the great master of monastic history, Dom David Knowles, aided by Christopher Brooke and Vera London, was published first in 1972 and was quickly recognised as a major work of reference, noted for its mastery of accurate detail. It has now been brought up to date with substantial addenda and corrigenda by Christopher Brooke. The 1972 volume covers the period 940–1216, and comprises fully documented, critical lists of monastic superiors, with succinct biographical details. It is an essential foundation for all prosopographical study of the religious history of the period; and the precise chronology that it underpins is invaluable for dating innumerable undated documents. As such, the book is a fundamental tool of medieval research.

Book Fear of Enemies and Collective Action

Download or read book Fear of Enemies and Collective Action written by Ioannis D. Evrigenis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes individuals with divergent and often conflicting interests join together and act in unison? By drawing on the fear of external threats, this book develops a theory of 'negative association' that examines the dynamics captured by the maxim 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend'. It then traces its role from Greek and Roman political thought, through Machiavelli and the reason of state thinkers, and Hobbes and his emulators and critics, to the realists of the twentieth century. By focusing on the role of fear and enmity in the formation of individual and group identity, this book reveals an important tradition in the history of political thought and offers insights into texts that are considered familiar. This book demonstrates that the fear of external threats is an essential element of the formation and preservation of political groups and that its absence renders political association unsustainable.

Book Rotuli Parisienses 2 vols

Download or read book Rotuli Parisienses 2 vols written by William J. Courtenay and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 1166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues the edition of the rotuli, or lists of benefice supplications, sent to the papacy by masters, bachelors, and students at the University of Paris in the fourteenth century. It specifically covers the pontificate of the Avignon pope Clement VII (1378-1394). It also contains letters of provision, in abbreviated form, that resulted from those petitions, along with a large number of supplications from individual Parisian scholars either submitted independently or, more frequently, through another sponsor. In contrast to earlier papal beneficial policy, Pope Clement responded favorably to many petitions from students in the faculty of arts at Paris, some of them in the beginning years of their undergraduate education. Thus, in addition to providing important information on Parisian scholars and papal beneficial policy in the early years of the Papal Schism, it documents a portion of the university community otherwise invisible, namely undergraduate students, and reveals the connections between Parisian scholars and social and ecclesiastical patrons at the end of the fourteenth century. The book concludes with an index of the names of scholars and patrons as well as a place-name index locating the parish and collegiate churches mentioned in the texts. Along with the two earlier volumes, this edition represents the largest body of new documentation for the pre-fifteenth century University to appear since the publication of the Chartularium Universitatis Parisiensis at the end of the nineteenth century.

Book England under the Norman and Angevin Kings

Download or read book England under the Norman and Angevin Kings written by Robert Bartlett and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-01-27 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vivid and and comprehensive account of the politics, religion, and culture of England in the century and a half after the Norman Conquest lays bare the patterns of everyday life, and increases our understanding of medieval society at a time when England was more closely tied to Europe than ever before. This was a period in which the ruling dynasty and military aristocracy were deeply enmeshed with the politics and culture of France. The book describes their conflicts and their preoccupations: the sense of honour, the role of violence, and the glitter of tournament, heraldry, and Arthurian romance. The author explores the mechanics of their government, and analyses the part played by the Church at a time of radical developments in religious life and organization. He investigates the role of ordinary men and women: the fundamental importance of the peasant economy, the growing urban and commercial arenas; and also their outlook on the world, including their views on the past; on sexuality; on animals; on death, the undead and the occult. The result is a fascinating and complex account of a period which begins with conquest and ends in assimilation.

Book Lectures on Probability Theory and Statistics

Download or read book Lectures on Probability Theory and Statistics written by Amir Dembo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-11-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains two of the three lectures that were given at the 33rd Probability Summer School in Saint-Flour (July 6-23, 2003). Amir Dembo’s course is devoted to recent studies of the fractal nature of random sets, focusing on some fine properties of the sample path of random walk and Brownian motion. In particular, the cover time for Markov chains, the dimension of discrete limsup random fractals, the multi-scale truncated second moment and the Ciesielski-Taylor identities are explored. Tadahisa Funaki’s course reviews recent developments of the mathematical theory on stochastic interface models, mostly on the so-called \nabla \varphi interface model. The results are formulated as classical limit theorems in probability theory, and the text serves with good applications of basic probability techniques.
