Download or read book Abalone of the World written by S. A. Shepard and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1992-07-27 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume contains some sixty papers and reviews presented at the First International Symposium on Abalone Biology, Fisheries and Culture held in La Paz, Mexico. Introductory reviews in the book focus on the evolutionary origin, radiation and modern relationships of the genus Haliotis. Further papers review aspects of the reproductive process, larval energetics, mechanisms of larval settlement, and the ecology of settlement. Feeding deterrents and attractants, and the relation between food and growth are reviewed in a later section of authoritative papers. The natural mortality of abalone and its causes, predators and diseases are thoroughly reviewed. Several papers summarise information on the withering syndrome afflicting black abalone in California. A series of excellent papers and reviews then consider the problems of managing abalone fisheries. The models used are reviewed and examples given of the application of models to specific fisheries. Further papers provide new information on stock enhancement and the book concludes with case studies of the eight major abalone fisheries of the world with a review of the management of each. The book is divided into eight sections as follows: Part I - Evolution and distributuion. Part II - Physiology, genetics, reproduction. Part III - Larval ecology and settlement. Part IV - Feeding, growth. Part V - Marketing, disease and predators. Part VI - Fishery biology, modelling. Part VII - Case studies of fisheries. Part VIII - Culture.

Book excerpt: For Native peoples of California, the abalone found along the state’s coast have remarkably complex significance as food, spirit, narrative symbol, tradable commodity, and material with which to make adornment and sacred regalia. The large mollusks also represent contemporary struggles surrounding cultural identity and political sovereignty. Abalone Tales, a collaborative ethnography, presents different perspectives on the multifaceted material and symbolic relationships between abalone and the Ohlone, Pomo, Karuk, Hupa, and Wiyot peoples of California. The research agenda, analyses, and writing strategies were determined through collaborative relationships between the anthropologist Les W. Field and Native individuals and communities. Several of these individuals contributed written texts or oral stories for inclusion in the book. Tales about abalone and their historical and contemporary meanings are related by Field and his coauthors, who include the chair and other members of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe; a Point Arena Pomo elder; the chair of the Wiyot tribe and her sister; several Hupa Indians; and a Karuk scholar, artist, and performer. Reflecting the divergent perspectives of various Native groups and people, the stories and analyses belie any presumption of a single, unified indigenous understanding of abalone. At the same time, they shed light on abalone’s role in cultural revitalization, struggles over territory, tribal appeals for federal recognition, and connections among California’s Native groups. While California’s abalone are in danger of extinction, their symbolic power appears to surpass even the environmental crises affecting the state’s vulnerable coastline.

Book excerpt: A vivid dream teaches Little Wolf about courage and acceptance of those who are different, and inspires her to show her daughters and their classmates how to be proud of their diverse cultural backgrounds. Throughout her life, Little Wolf has been troubled by the injustice she sees all around her. When she was young, she was bullied for her Indigenous heritage. Her mother, White Raven, spent ten years in a residential school, separated from her family and isolated from her culture. Little Wolf’s own children are growing up in a different, more open society, but hatred and racism still exist. Little Wolf worries about the world her daughters will inherit. One night, a vivid dream helps her realize her own strength as a leader and peacemaker in her community. Told with powerful imagery and symbolism, Abalone Woman is the third book in the Little Wolf series, which presents themes of racism, trauma, and family unity through relatable, age-appropriate narratives.

Book excerpt: Locked up for poaching abalone, Shuhood Abader began writing his life story. For years, he had been a small cog in a criminal industry stretching from the Cape underworld to China's luxury seafood market. As abalone vanishes from the South African coast, Shuhood's first-person account takes us right into the heart of the crisis. Kimon de Greef is the pre-eminent local expert on the illicit abalone trade. He contextualises Abader's raw, immediate tale by showing how the system works: from desperate fishing communities via gang strongholds on the Cape Flats, tik, guns and police complicity to th.

Book Handbook of Culture of Abalone and Other Marine Gastropods

Download or read book Handbook of Culture of Abalone and Other Marine Gastropods written by Kirk O. Hahn and published by CRC PressI Llc. This book was released on 1988-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CRC Handbook of Culture of Abalone and Other Marine Gastropods provides basic techniques and detailed information on the biology of abalone, tropical top shell, queen conch, and other gastropods. It supplies information and data on the culture, reproduction, nutrition, and economics of gastropods currently being raised. The field of gastropod aquaculture is covered from the general biology of each animal to the techniques used in various regions of the world. The first section of the text presents important ecological and biological information on 22 species of abalone found in North America, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, France, and South Africa. The methods and techniques used to evaluate the reproductive cycle, to control gonad maturation, spawning, fertilization, larval development, and settlement are presented in a step by step format and evaluated for use with different size aquaculture facilities. It also surveys the proper physiological and nutritional factors affecting the growth and survival of cultured abalone. The ecological factors determining the success of reseeding juvenile abalone are discussed and reseeding is evaluated for use as fishery enhancement and aquaculture. The second section covers techniques used to culture abalone around the world. These chapters include information that was previously only recorded in foreign journals with limited distribution. This information source presents the necessary philosophy and fundamentals for a successful culture operation so that you can develop and implement your own techniques. Useful to both students and culturists alike, The CRC Handbook of Culture of Abalone and Other Marine Gastropods provides information and techniques that will be a handy reference in your day-to-day hatchery situations.Features:
