Book Return to the Islands

Download or read book Return to the Islands written by Sir Arthur Francis Grimble and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " ... 'At the end of [A Pattern of Islands] the author wrote 'I borrowed £150 at the end of my leave to pay my way back to the Pacific and leave the family in funds until I arrived there. I did not see them again for seven years. But that is another story.' This is the other story: and it is a remarkable one. Sir Arthur returns, alone this time, not only to the friendship of the Gilbert and Ellice Islanders and to continue his instruction in etiquette at the hands of 'Movement of Clouds', who becomes his adopted daughter, but also to increased anxieties and responsibilities on Bannaba (Ocean Island). Acting as resident Commissioner, Magistrate, and in charge of police and prisons, he has to intervene in the riots between the Gilbertese and Chinese labour force and to make arrests single-handed on the island of Arorae. But the Gilbertese know him as a friend and support him faithfully and with affection, though sometimes not without merriment when he shows himself ignorant of the finer points of their code of behaviour. On the 'guest mat' they tell of the forces that direct their lives, of the curse of Nakaa, of the boat that came home, of the tragedies following the outlawing of polygamy, and the way to 'the world's edge'. What stands out again very clearly in this inspiring book is the charm, the humour and the childlike sincerity of the Gilbertese; the courage, modesty and humanity of the author; and their mutual trust and love."--Publisher's description.

Excerpt: Kiritimati or Christmas Island is a Pacific Ocean raised coral atoll in the northern Line Islands, and part of the Republic of Kiribati. The island has the greatest land area of any coral atoll in the world: about 322 square kilometres (124 sq mi); its lagoon is about the same size. The atoll is about 150 km (93 mi) in perimeter, while the lagoon shoreline extends for over 48 km (30 mi). Christmas Island comprises over 70% of the total land area of Kiribati, a country encompassing 33 Pacific atolls and islands. Kiritimati Island (Christmas) is well known for its world class bone fishing. It also has excellent birdwatching and surfing opportunities. It lies 232 km (144 mi) north of the Equator, 6,700 km (4,200 mi) from Sydney, and 5,360 km (3,330 mi) from San Francisco. Christmas Island is in the world's farthest forward time zone, UTC+14, and Christmas Island is the first inhabited place on Earth to experience the New Year each year (see also Caroline Atoll, Kiribati). Despite being 1,530 miles (2,460 km) east of the 180 meridian, a 1995 realignment of the International Dateline by the Republic of Kiribati "moved" Christmas Island to west of the dateline. Nuclear tests were conducted in the region around Christmas Island by the United Kingdom in...

Book Warm Waters

  • Author : Vlad Sokhin
  • Publisher : Schilt Publishing & Gallery
  • Release : 2021-09-07

  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Warm Waters written by Vlad Sokhin and published by Schilt Publishing & Gallery. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documenting the devastating effects of global warming and climate change, Warm Waters is a multi-year photographic documentary across the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, from Northern Alaska to the remote outposts of New Zealand. The journey started in 2013 in Papua New Guinea, where photographer Vlad Sokhin documented illegal logging and deforestation. In 2014, Sokhin covered the rise of sea levels, coastal erosion and the effects of El Niño in Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Nauru, the Marshall Islands and Niue. In 2015, 2016 and 2018, he extensively covered the aftermath of tropical cyclones across Pacific island nations and delved deeper into documenting struggles of the affected communities, their resilience and adaptation to the realities of global warming. In 2019, he documented severe drought in Timor-Leste, caused by the weather anomalies. Warm Waters also looks at other environmental issues our planet is facing, such as climate migrants and their resettlement, permafrost melting, coral bleaching, and the need for renewable energy. The book shows the evidence of fight, adaptation, and hope of remote island and coastal communities. It takes you right into the lives of Inupiat and Yupik people in Alaska, and to the towns and villages that are being destroyed by the sea and coastal erosion on the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula. You will see how scientists work in the field, studying the effects of climate change, and how the people, affected by extreme weather conditions, are trying to survive and rebuild their lives after catastrophic events have ruined their land and homes. Warm Waters not only shows tragedy however; it shows the beauty of our planet, communities living in harmony with nature, and people that are tirelessly working to protect their fragile shores from the biggest environmental threat ever they have ever faced.
