Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK You can be the smartest quarterback in the world and have the greatest leadership skills and run around and all that, but if you can't throw the ball where it needs to be thrown, then none of that other stuff matters." (Troy Aikman) If that’s the case, then Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers could well be the best quarterback to ever play in the NFL. That is what analysts say now, but this acknowledgement was a long time in coming. Surpassing everyone’s expectations except his own, Rodgers flew under the radar for virtually his entire athletic career. He was the college junior who set season, game, and career records at Cal Berkeley only to get passed over by 23 teams on NFL Draft Day. He was the high school senior who set school and state records, only to be denied a single Division I scholarship. He’s the middle school kid who, when asked what he would contribute to the school during his admission interview, answered simply, "I'm going to make your sports programs better. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The Packers had another lukewarm start to their 2010 season, going 6-6. Two of the losses were in overtime, making his career record in overtime games 0-5. The questions of Rodgers’ composure under pressure resurfaced. More concerning than his performance in must-win scenarios was Rodgers’ health. After the game against the Redskins on Oct. 10, he was diagnosed with a concussion. Rodgers kept playing until he sustained a second concussion during the game against the Lions on Dec. 12. He was placed on injured reserve and cleared for play in time to start against the Giants on Dec. 26 in a must-win qualifier for postseason play. Rodgers led the Packers to a 45-17 win and turned in his highest single-game passing yardage of the season, 25 of 37 passes completed for 404 yards and four touchdowns. By defeating the Bears the following week, another elimination game, the Packers earned a wild card playoff spot. Rodgers took his team on the road, defeating the top three seeded teams—the Eagles, Falcons, and Bears (again)—to win the NFC Championship Title and the privilege of playing against the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. The quarterback matchup for Super Bowl XLV was Rodgers versus Ben Roethlisberger. Rodgers and his receiving corps, in particular Jordy Nelson, carved up “the best defense in the league,” completing 24 of 39 passes for 304 yards, 3 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, and 111.5 passer rating. As Rodgers hoisted the Vince Lombardi trophy overhead, linebacker Clay Matthews draped... Buy the book to continue reading! Follow @hyperink on Twitter! Visit us at www.facebook.com/hyperink! Book excerpt: The story behind one team's unprecedented dominance at the quarterback position By developing a trio of Hall of Fame-bound passers, the Green Bay Packers have enjoyed success at the quarterback position that surpasses that of any other team in the National Football League. In "Leaders of the Pack," veteran Packers writer Rob Reischel explores the organization's history of successful signal-callers, highlighting Bart Starr's Super Bowl victories, Brett Favre's collection of NFL records, and Aaron Rodgers' ascent into becoming one of the best players in today's NFL. Reischel traces the history of all three players, highlighting what it means to be a Packers quarterback both on and off the field, and then expands his insight to the rest of the league. He examines other team's dynamic trios--such as the Dallas Cowboys' Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, and Tony Romo or the San Francisco 49ers' Y. A. Tittle, Joe Montana, and Steve Young--but demonstrates why the Packers have the most successful players at the position in NFL history. Featuring Favre's thoughts about his place in the Packers' quarterback legacy in his own words, "Leaders of the Pack" is required reading for Packers fans young and old.

While success or failure in those instances can hinge on any of countless factors, a breeze, a player's unexpected arm movement, a deflection, Rodgers's Hail Mary passes seem to connect more often than those of other passers. There is a good reason for it. Behind the "miracles" is Rodgers's steady zeal in practice and his passion for consistency. This is the story of hard work on the gridiron that sometimes leads to amazing moments in pro football.

Book Facing the Green Bay Packers

Download or read book Facing the Green Bay Packers written by Chuck Carlson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of nearly one hundred years, just a handful of NFL teams have enjoyed success across multiple decades. There’s absolutely no doubt which franchise the fans in Wisconsin would put at the top of the list. Most Packers fans are familiar with the greatest players, games, and moments in team history. But what they don’t know is just what it was like to go up against their favorite team. When opposing clubs prepared to play Vince Lombardi’s squad, how did they contend with the one play they knew was coming: the green and gold’s formidable power sweep? When the Vikings, Lions, 49ers, and other teams played against the Brett Favre–led Packers, how did they fare against the three-time league MVP? After Favre departed the stage at Lambeau, how did opponents contend with another MVP quarterback, Aaron Rodgers? In Facing the Green Bay Packers, veteran sportswriter Chuck Carlson takes Packers fans inside the locker rooms, onto the sidelines, and out on the field with opposing players and coaches. Carlson interviews some of the biggest names in the game to get their perspectives on playing against the best teams in Packers history. He covers the most dramatic moments, most intense rivalries, and most unforgettable games from Green Bay’s pro football lore—from the other side of the line of scrimmage. Vince Lombardi famously said that “teamwork is what the Green Bay Packers is all about.” The result was unqualified excellence. This book describes what it was like to play against his Packers teams and others, in the words of players who did just that. Book Out of the Darkness

Download or read book Out of the Darkness written by Ian O'Connor and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A masterwork. ... O'Connor answers every question, deftly and deeply, that we've had about the most controversial person in America's biggest game." —Peter King Four-time New York Times bestselling sport biographer Ian O’Connor pulls back the curtain on four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, delivering the definitive portrait of the legendary yet mysterious quarterback who has astonished, befuddled, yet always captivated fans of America’s #1 sport. Aaron Rodgers is among the two or three most talented players to ever hold the most important job in American team sports – quarterback. He also stands as the most mysterious and polarizing figure in the modern-day national pastime that is professional football. From his controversial Covid stance to his methods of spiritual awakening to his estrangement from his family to his high-profile romances to his devastating Achilles injury a mere four plays into his New York Jets career, Rodgers has long dominated the NFL’s news cycle. At thirty-nine, in search of a challenge that would rejuvenate him, Rodgers divorced the iconic Green Bay Packers of Vince Lombardi fame for the Jets, who have not appeared in a Super Bowl since Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. The trade made Rodgers the biggest story in the biggest league in the biggest market. By far. That story only got bigger when Rodgers shockingly went down on the night of 9/11, in front of a packed house that roared for him when he took the field carrying an American flag, and in front of the biggest Monday Night Football audience in ESPN history, peaking at more than 25 million viewers across all platforms. Rodgers then shocked the world by pulling off the fastest recorded comeback from an Achilles tear, returning to practice eleven weeks after surgery. Remarkably enough, he would have played again in the 2023 season, at age 40, had the Jets remained in playoff contention. Ian O’Connor uses hundreds of original interviews to pull back the curtain and answer the most penetrating questions about the league’s most enigmatic player. Just like he did in his defining bios of Bill Belichick, Mike Krzyzewski, Derek Jeter, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer, O’Connor reveals all sides of an all-time great and delivers a portrait of a complex man that will forever shape the way he is viewed.
