Book excerpt: Increasingly deadly and destructive attacks on the United States and her allies have grown in intensity and frequency in the past twenty-five years, ignored by successive administrations on both sides of the American political spectrum. But President JoAnne Rush has decided enough is enough, initiating action where it’s needed to stop a persistent threat and relying on Marine Corps Captain Katy Morgan to take the fight directly to the enemy. From her assignment as an intelligence officer supporting SEAL Team 3 in San Diego to the shores of Tripoli, Katy is unaware of the forces trying to stop her from accomplishing the mission, of hostages bought and sold by terrorists and dictators, and of the geopolitics in the Middle East. She is drawn into a world of deception and betrayal, where only her values as a Marine officer keep her focused on the objective: to stop a state sponsor of global terrorism. Who’s following her, and what do they want? Why was Katy selected for this mission, and what will she find when she gets there?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammals of Africa (MoA) is a series of six volumes which describes, in detail, every currently recognized species of African land mammal. With more than 1,160 species and 16-18 orders, Africa has the greatest diversity and abundance of mammals in the world. The reasons for this and the mechanisms behind their evolution are given special attention in the series. Each volume follows the same format, with detailed profiles of every species and higher taxa. The series includes hundreds of colour illustrations and pencil drawings by Jonathan Kingdon highlighting the morphology and behaviour of the species concerned, as well as line drawings of skulls and jaws by Jonathan Kingdon and Meredith Happold. Every species also includes a detailed distribution map. Edited by Jonathan Kingdon, David Happold, Tom Butynski, Mike Hoffmann, Meredith Happold and Jan Kalina, and written by more than 350 authors, all experts in their fields, Mammals of Africa is as comprehensive a compendium of current knowledge as is possible. Extensive references alert readers to more detailed information. This first volume in the series comprises eight introductory chapters covering topics such as evolution, geography and geology, biotic zones, classification, behaviour and morphology. The rest of the book is devoted to the Afrotheria, a grouping that comprises six orders and 49 species; these are the hyraxes, elephants, manatees, otter-shrews, golden-moles, sengis (elephant-shrews) and Aardvark.

Book General Dynamics F 111 Aardvark

Download or read book General Dynamics F 111 Aardvark written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-20 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its uncertain start the F-111 proved to be one of the most successful and influential designs of the 1960s. Its radical 'swing wing' was adopted by the F-14 Tomcat, Panavia Tornado and Rockwell B-1B Lancer while its turbofan-type engines became standard in many combat aircraft. F-111 crews pioneered tactics using terrain-following and laser targeting devices that made the F-15E Eagle's missions possible. Its 4,000 low-altitude penetration missions during Operation Linebacker in Vietnam showed how individual aircraft can deliver crippling blows to enemy capability without loss to themselves. The recent retirement of the F-111 from Australian service appears to have created a surge of interest in the type, which hasn't been featured in previous Osprey works.

This book discusses their challenges as a human population encroaches on the land that has been theirs for centuries. We have a sacred trust to ensure that these species continue to flourish, knowing that what is lost will be gone forever.

Book The Bedside Ark

Download or read book The Bedside Ark written by David Muirhead and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This riotous assembly of unrespectable creatures comprises 42 short accounts of southern Africa’s vibrant collection of wild animals. From the one-of-its-kind aardvark to the wilfully ignorant ostrich; the Houdini-like honey badger to the precariously specialised klipspringer; and from the curvaceous, sports-model springbok to the recklessly insensitive hyaena – this book airs the dirty laundry (and shares the trade secrets) of some of our wackiest, most eccentric fauna. Many of the stories are illustrated with delightful line drawings. Basing his accounts on accurate, true-to-life detail, but always looking on the light side, author David Muirhead captures the weird and wonderful lives of his subjects, investigating their often exaggerated reputations, their habits, weaknesses, armouries and modi operandi. At once informative and hugely entertaining, this riotous assembly will appeal to anyone with the slightest interest in wildlife.
