  • ISBN : 1137118318
  • Pages : 557 pages

Download or read book Namibia s Red Line written by G. Miescher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-06-18 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on archival sources and oral history, this book reconstructs a border-building process in Namibia that spanned more than sixty years. The process commenced with the establishment of a temporary veterinary defence line against rinderpest by the German colonial authorities in the late nineteenth century and ended with the construction of a continuous two-metre-high fence by the South African colonial government sixty years later. This 1250-kilometre fence divides northern from central Namibia even today. The book combines a macro and a micro-perspective and differentiates between cartographic and physical reality. The analysis explores both the colonial state's agency with regard to veterinary and settlement policies and the strategies of Africans and Europeans living close to the border. The analysis also includes the varying perceptions of individuals and populations who lived further north and south of the border and describes their experiences crossing the border as migrant workers, African traders, European settlers and colonial officials. The Red Line's history is understood as a gradual process of segregating livestock and people, and of constructing dichotomies of modern and traditional, healthy and sick, European and African.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook offers all the information walkers need to enjoy the 344km (215 miles) of the Severn Way. Beginning at the River Severn's source in Powys, mid-Wales, the route follows the entire Severn Valley, meandering through many superb landscapes and interesting towns and villages before finishing near Bristol, in south-west England. The step-by-step route description is divided into four county sections, accompanied by OS map extracts and packed with historical and geographical information about the places along the way. Also includes a route to the source of the river via Plynlimon and a link route from Severn Beach back to Bristol at the end. The River Severn pulls together threads of history, trade, commerce, civil war and the lives of ordinary folk to produce a tapestry that is finely woven and rich in colour. That walkers should want to trace its course, its many twists and turns, is hardly surprising, not least because of its capacity to offer countless challenges and plentiful delights. Walking the Severn Way is a chance to get away from it all and relax without having to resort to distant mountain regions.

We include exhaustive information about the general microbiology of genus Azospirillum, their identification strategies; the evaluation of plant growth promoting mechanisms, inoculants technology and agronomic use of these bacteria and some special references to the genetic technology and use.

Book Nonlinear Fracture Mechanics for Engineers

Download or read book Nonlinear Fracture Mechanics for Engineers written by Ashok Saxena and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-03-31 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture mechanics is an essential tool for engineers in a number of different engineering disciplines. For example, an engineer in a metals- or plastics-dependent industry might use fracture mechanics to evaluate and characterize materials, while another in aerospace or construction might use fracture mechanics-based methods for product design and service life-time estimation. This balanced treatment, which covers both applied engineering and mathematical aspects of the topic, provides a much-needed multidisciplinary treatment of the field suitable for the many diverse applications of the subject. While texts on linear elastic fracture mechanics abound, no complete treatments of the complex topic of nonlinear fracture mechanics have been available in a textbook format - until now. Written by an author with extensive industry credentials as well as academic experience, Nonlinear Fracture Mechanics for Engineers examines nonlinear fracture mechanics and its applications in mechanics, materials testing, and life prediction of components. The book includes the first-ever complete examination of creep and creep-fatigue crack growth. Examples and problems reinforce the concepts presented. A complete chapter on applications and case studies involving nonlinear fracture mechanics completes this thorough evaluation of this dynamic field of study.
