Under Supervised work come the occupations included in the drawing course and constructive work Of all kinds that are carried on a step further from the kindergarten. This is generally taken during the last half hour of the after noon, and suggestions for this period are here given in the daily Occupation Outline. Unsupervised work includes that which is generally termed seat work or busy work, given while one division is reciting. The real problem lies in the domain Of Unsupervised work. What materials to use and how the Children can be taught to become independent workers. This may be accomplished by a variety and right use of materials. Book The Ninth Occupation Peas and Cork Work in Primary Schools

Download or read book The Ninth Occupation Peas and Cork Work in Primary Schools written by J. H. Shults and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ninth Occupation, Peas and Cork Work, in Primary Schools: A Practical Manual Especially for Primary-Kindergarten Teachers This work constitutes one of a series now issued or soon to be published upon the use of kindergarten material in primary schools. The purpose of the author and publisher is to aid in bringing about the best possible kindergarten training in primary schools. While the use of this material has rapidly increased within the last few years, thus far there has been an almost total absence of literature along this line. While the regular kindergartens are doing most worthy work, yet their operations are limited to the comparative few. Probably 95 percent of the children of America will receive their first training outside the home in primary schools, and while the establishment of regular kindergartens everywhere is always tn be encouraged, in the meantime let us labor to make the best possible and only available substitute - the primary school - a place where at least some of the advantages of kindergarten training can be secured. The teacher will understand that the primary purpose of all the kindergarten gifts and occupations is the development of the physical, mental and moral faculties of the child, and not the construction of objects, etc. While it is probably true, that no child can construct a form new to him without developing his capacity for construction, yet a much greater development will result if the lessons are properly conducted. In order to secure the best development, the child should be helped by hints and suggestions, rather than by direct instruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education by Doing, or Occupations and Busy Work, for Primary Classes In observing the results achieved by the Kinder garten, educators have felt that Froebel's great discovery of education by occupations must have something for the public school - that a further ap plication of the putting of experience and action in the place of books and abstract thinking, could be made beyond the fifth or sixth year of the child's life. This book is an outgrt of this idea, con ceived in the Spirit of the New Education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Seat Work and Industrial Occupations

Download or read book Seat Work and Industrial Occupations written by Mary L. Gilman and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seat Work and Industrial Occupations: A Practical Course, for Primary Grades I believe that the school is primarily a social institution. I believe that education is a process of living, and not a preparation for future living. I believe that the school must represent present life, - life as real and vital to the child as that which he carries on in the home, in the neighborhood, or on the playground. I believe that the school life should grow gradually out of the home life, - that it should take up and continue the activities with which the child is already familiar in the home. I believe it should exhibit these activities to the child, and reproduce them in such ways that the child will gradually learn the meaning of them, and be able to play his own part in relation to them. I believe that the social Life of the child is the basis of concentration, or correlation, in all his training or growth. The social life gives the unconscious unity and the background of all his efforts and all his attainments. Book excerpt: From David Graeber, the bestselling author of The Dawn of Everything and Debt—“a master of opening up thought and stimulating debate” (Slate)—a powerful argument against the rise of meaningless, unfulfilling jobs…and their consequences. Does your job make a meaningful contribution to the world? In the spring of 2013, David Graeber asked this question in a playful, provocative essay titled “On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs.” It went viral. After one million online views in seventeen different languages, people all over the world are still debating the answer. There are hordes of people—HR consultants, communication coordinators, telemarketing researchers, corporate lawyers—whose jobs are useless, and, tragically, they know it. These people are caught in bullshit jobs. Graeber explores one of society’s most vexing and deeply felt concerns, indicting among other villains a particular strain of finance capitalism that betrays ideals shared by thinkers ranging from Keynes to Lincoln. “Clever and charismatic” (The New Yorker), Bullshit Jobs gives individuals, corporations, and societies permission to undergo a shift in values, placing creative and caring work at the center of our culture. This book is for everyone who wants to turn their vocation back into an avocation and “a thought-provoking examination of our working lives” (Financial Times).

Book Seat Work for Primary Grades Classic Reprint

Download or read book Seat Work for Primary Grades Classic Reprint written by Nan L. Mildren and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seat Work for Primary Grades As children spend the greater part of the school day at their seats (especially true of the child in the country school) and as activity is the strongest factor in the life and growth of the normal child, it is vitally true that: - The problem of suitable and profitable occupation for young children, while not reciting, is one most important and fundamental in the Primary School. Upon this problem rests: - (a) A happier, a more helpful, a more active school life. (b) The development of power to see and to do. (c) The strengthening of right habits. (d) The addition of knowledge. (e) The fixing of facts. (f) A better solving of the question of discipline, for - system and seat work make "discipline" look pale, (g) Growth in every sense of the word growth. Activity means life! It is the strongest factor in child life. It is an essential factor in growth! Activity well directed means life and growth - physically, mentally, morally. To be able to efficiently do means mastery. To be kept busy is a demand of the child's nature. To keep him busy in a way which tells for the good of the child and the good of the school is the problem facing the Primary teacher. Not to be kept busy along lines of right activity for the best interests of the school means that: - He will keep himself busy along other lines not helpful. He will become listless, uninterested, stupid. He will take relief in blessed sleep - "Nature's sweet restorer." This last - the safest of the three, for - Blessed be the man who invented sleep, as well as "dreams," for these helpless little ones burdened with - "Nothing to do." The teacher who does not keep him busy along right lines: - (a) Should expect her whole day to go wrong. (b) Should not expect growth or good results in either work or discipline. (c) Should not wonder why she is so worn and tired at close of day. (d) Should expect to grow old before her time. (e) Should expect to "hate teaching and children." Seat work tests knowledge and skill: - When you present lesson: - You think he understands; he says he understands. Book Strauss Life of Jesus from George Eliot

Download or read book Strauss Life of Jesus from George Eliot written by David Friedrich Strauss and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strauss's Life of Jesus (1835) was an epoch-making work which transformed the nature of biblical criticism. Providing a radical new approach that went straight to the heart of Christianity, it created an immediate sensation and Straus (1808-74) became the centre of intense controversy. This, the first English translation, was by George Eliot and was her first published book. Strauss's interpretation of biblical events was a result of an a response to the attacks on orthodox Christianity brought by the Enlightenment. In the face of skepticism about such biblical events as miracles, his aim was to explain how Christians came to believe when there was no objective historical basis for their faith. Taking the resurrection as the key article of faith, his verdict was that religion was an expression of the human mind's ability to generate myths and interpret them as truths revealed by God. Influenced by Hegel and Schleiermacher, Strauss characterized Christianity as a stage in the evolution of pantheism that had reached its culmination in Hegelian philosophy. He thus created an entirely new atmosphere of scholarship on Christ's life and historical criticism of the Bible. The furore turned the Life of Jesus into a cause celebre and to German liberals Strauss became a symbol for the freedom of thought. Reprinting the English translation in its original and most important edition for the first time, these three volumes provide the reader with the key work of one of the world's most well-known and frank critics of Christianity.

Book Plans for Busy Work

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plans for Busy Work: Prepared by the Boston Primary Teachers' Association The primary teacher must solve a double problem. She must not only teach the children how to read, write, and Cipher under her guidance, but she must also teach them how to study independently, so that they may be prepared to use books for themselves. While the teacher of higher grades may content her self with explaining and assigning the lessons, leaving the pupil to perform his tasks unaided, the primary teacher must direct the period of study as well as the recitation and the teaching exercises. In an ordinary school of from forty to sixty pupils, not more than fifteen or twenty should be reciting at once; the others must busy themselves at the desk, table, or blackboard. Our problem is to devise suitable and profitable occupation for these pupils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan Egenolf's study, informed by visual culture and a wide range of archival texts, offers a new interdisciplinary reading of gendered and political responses to such key events in the history of Romanticism as the 1798 Irish Rebellion. She examines the artistry and political engagement of Elizabeth Hamilton, Maria Edgeworth, and Sydney Owenson, whose self-conscious use of glosses facilitated their critiques of politics and society and simultaneously revealed the process of fictional structuring.
