Book Essays and Studies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays and Studies Classic Reprint written by Algernon Charles Swinburne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Studies The truth on such matters, and on such only, as I can claim at least to have studied with the devotion of years to the utmost of what ability was in me. The convictions expressed are in any case my own, and due to the inspira tion of no party, no stranger, and no friend. My judg ment has been guided wholly by my sense of the service or the disservice done to art by the works or the Opinions on which I have taken occasion to remark. I have spoken but once or twice at the outside either of bad work or bad criticism, of folly or of falsehood, of ineptitude or of malignity my chief aim, as my chief pleasure, in all such studies as these has been rather to acknowledge and applaud what I found noble and precious than to scrutinize or to stigmatize what I might perceive to be worthless and base. It is not indeed always possible to show cause for our admiration of great men and their great work, and not seem in passing to stigmatize by implication the base work or the baser comments on other men's work of those who hate and covet the greatness which they can neither injure nor attain, the glory which they can neither diminish nor endure; to praise what is good in any kind is to dispraise what is bad, and every honour done to men worthy of honour is an insult to men who are powerless to confer it and hopeless to receive. Book Originality and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Originality and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by William Henry McMasters and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Originality, and Other Essays One reason why this little volume of essays is turned loose on a defenceless world is because the supply of white paper is not yet exhausted. Also, the author's patience in trying to get them printed in regular publications is quite exhausted. The third, and best reason, for its appearance is that American publishers are of the unanimous opinion that there isn't any public demand whatsoever for a volume of essays from anybody on any subject. Under the circumstances what else is there for me to do, but offer them and hope for the worst? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Representative Essays in Modern Thought

Download or read book Representative Essays in Modern Thought written by Harrison Ross Steeves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative Essays in Modern Thought: A Basis for Composition IN presenting this 'volume to teachers of English composi tion, the editors realize that it can hardly fail to suffer from the suspicion of novelty which confronts new publications in a conservative educational field. It is hoped, however, that ini tial distrust of the book because of its novelty will not outlive a fair trial of the methods and materials which it offers. This hope is based upon successful experiment with much of the sub stance oi the volume among students as varied and as cosmo politan as the undergraduates in Columbia College, and upon the generous and often enthusiastic support that the underlying idea has received from prominent educators throughout the country who have had occasion to pass judgment upon its value. Book The Hall of Uselessness

Download or read book The Hall of Uselessness written by Simon Leys and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An NYRB Classics Original Simon Leys is a Renaissance man for the era of globalization. A distinguished scholar of classical Chinese art and literature and one of the first Westerners to recognize the appalling toll of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, Leys also writes with unfailing intelligence, seriousness, and bite about European art, literature, history, and politics and is an unflinching observer of the way we live now. The Hall of Uselessness is the most extensive collection of Leys’s essays to be published to date. In it, he addresses subjects ranging from the Chinese attitude to the past to the mysteries of Belgium and Belgitude; offers portraits of André Gide and Zhou Enlai; takes on Roland Barthes and Christopher Hitchens; broods on the Cambodian genocide; reflects on the spell of the sea; and writes with keen appreciation about writers as different as Victor Hugo, Evelyn Waugh, and Georges Simenon. Throughout, The Hall of Uselessness is marked with the deep knowledge, skeptical intelligence, and passionate conviction that have made Simon Leys one of the most powerful essayists of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authority of Criticism: And Other Essays To these mainly theoretical but in part practical papers I have added a few others, not merely to lend variety to the volume, but more particularly to illustrate in a somewhat concrete way the truth of princi ples contended for in the group of essays just Specified. For example, the papers on Tennyson and Musset and on the Byron Revival will be found to bear upon the im portant topic of the emotional basis of litera ture. They were written, however, with no intention to prove a thesis, but simply as critical studies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Working Faith of the Social Reformer and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Working Faith of the Social Reformer and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by Henry Jones, Jr. and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working Faith of the Social Reformer and Other Essays The essays and lectures in this volume have already appeared in print: "The Working Faith of the Social Reformer" and "The Moral Aspect of the Fiscal Question" in The Hibbert Journal; "The Child and Heredity" in a volume of The Crown Theological Library, entitled The Child and Religion; "Idealism and Politics" in The Contemporary Review; "Social and Individual Evolution" in The New World; and "Social Responsibilities" in a pamphlet published by James MacLehose & Sons. I wish to express my hearty gratitude to the Editors and Publishers of these periodicals for their kindness in allowing me to collect the papers together for republication. Most of the essays were originally written in response to the incitement of some quite temporary circumstance; but they all turn around principles which, if they are valid, are of cardinal importance for our thinking and practice in social matters. The changes I have made are both less numerous and less important than I could have wished. In particular I could have gladly eliminated some repetitions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Criticism and Courage: And Other Essays I would be the last to claim that the essays here reprinted deserved to be rescued from the magazines in which, with one exception, they first appeared; the last in the book has not been in print before. Having undertaken, however, to make a selection of pieces for the series, I thought it better, in such a small compass, to keep the articles more or less to the one point, viz., the advocacy of intel lectual freedom in Ireland as an essential prelude to real national progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Basis of Morals, and Other Essays: Viz;, Right and Wrong; The Ethics of Belief; The Ethics of Religion It may be said that this is not the whole of the meaning of the word responsible, ' even in its loosest sense; that it ought never to be used except of a conscious agent. Still this is part of its meaning; if we regard an event as determined by a variety of circumstances, a man's choice being among them, we say that he is re sponsible for just that choice which is left him by the other circumstances. Download or read book Vers De Soci t and Parody written by H. A. Page and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vers De Societe and Parody: With Other Essays And fair proportion, is no easy task, but this is what the author of the present little volume 'has aimed at. Goethe, not without a certain ancon scious self-revelation, said sneeringly of parody: I have never concealed what an implacable enemy I am to all parody and travesty; but it is only on this account that I am so, because this base brood pulls down the noble, the beautiful, the great, in Notwithstanding the sneer of so great a master, the author believes that, when viewed in a proper spirit, parody may be both instructive and amusing. When some part of the portion here given on that subject appeared in the Brz'tz's/z Quarterly Review, it was received with peculiar favour; the Spectator remarking: There is some admirable criticism in 'parody and Parodists.' We have never seen the real nature of parody better defined. The author trusts that none of his kindly critics may have any reason now to change their Opinion of the essays of which they before spoke so favourably. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles and Other Essays With God all things are possible; he made all the laws of Nature, so that processes would go on in regular channels as far as man is con cerned, that is, he made reliable laws to base work on, but if he chooses to change the action of such laws to meet certain conditions, he can easily do so without disarranging things, in other words, if he could not he would be limited and not an all-powerful God, the Universe would not be in his control and anything might happen and he could not prevent such. It is quite illogical to say or think that God would not or could not change, temporarily, laws to suit. His. Purposes and to perform the Miracles of the Scriptures.
