"Hear, O Israel," Moses says, giving voice to one of the central tenets of Judaism, "The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Word Upon Deuteronomy "Would that mine adversary had written a book," exclaimed the persecuted patriarch, in the conviction that innocence is sure to gain the day, as soon as the charges brought against it are plainly stated and exposed to the daylight. We might put the same wish into the mouth of the persecuted Word of God, at which men are ever cavilling, and upon which all manner of unreconcilable imputations are now being cast. In this case we would add the wish, 0, that those concerned would read the book, - for in general they neither can nor will, and thus are governed by the unhappy impression, that those who are learned and experienced on the subject, have discovered some fatal flaw. We protest that if it could be assumed that the works of the German rationalists were commonly read, we would feel ourselves free from the obligation to refute them, for, to every devout mind they refute themselves. Before coming to a close they infallibly suffer the confession to escape them (see the words of Ewald and Baur quoted further on), that the fault is not in the Word of God, but in the inveterate infidelity of their own hearts. Although it was at once determined to publish the manuscript of Deuteronomy and Joshua first, the necessity of separating the leaves of the other three manuscripts and of making complete collations of them caused a delay which was further increased by the limita tions put upon my time by the continuance of university duties. Thus two full years elapsed before the text of this volume could be sent to the printer; and yet I am well aware of the incomplete ness of my study, which has had as its chief aim the full presenta tion of the evidence of this manuscript rather than the addition of all the explanations and theories which seem worthy of con sideration.
