Book Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English

Download or read book Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English written by Michael B. Montgomery and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 3218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English is a revised and expanded edition of the Weatherford Award–winning Dictionary of Smoky Mountain English, published in 2005 and known in Appalachian studies circles as the most comprehensive reference work dedicated to Appalachian vernacular and linguistic practice. Editors Michael B. Montgomery and Jennifer K. N. Heinmiller document the variety of English used in parts of eight states, ranging from West Virginia to Georgia—an expansion of the first edition's geography, which was limited primarily to North Carolina and Tennessee—and include over 10,000 entries drawn from over 2,200 sources. The entries include approximately 35,000 citations to provide the reader with historical context, meaning, and usage. Around 1,600 of those examples are from letters written by Civil War soldiers and their family members, and another 4,000 are taken from regional oral history recordings. Decades in the making, the Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English surpasses the original by thousands of entries. There is no work of this magnitude available that so completely illustrates the rich language of the Smoky Mountains and Southern Appalachia.

Book American Language Supplement 2

Download or read book American Language Supplement 2 written by H.L. Mencken and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The DEFINITIVE EDITION OF The American Language was published in 1936. Since then it has been recognized as a classic. It is that rarest of literary accomplishments—a book that is authoritative and scientific and is at the same time very diverting reading. But after 1936 HLM continued to gather new materials diligently. In 1945 those which related to the first six chapters of The American Language were published as Supplement I; the present volume contains those new materials which relate to the other chapters. The ground thus covered in Supplement II is as follows: 1. American Pronunciation. Its history. Its divergence from English usage. The regional and racial dialects. 2. American Spelling. The influence of Noah Webster upon it. Its characters today. The simplified spelling movement. The treatment of loan words. Punctuation, capitalization, and abbreviation. 3. The Common Speech. Outlines of its grammar. Its verbs, pronouns, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. The double negative. Other peculiarities. 4. Proper Names in America. Surnames. Given-names. Place-names. Other names. 5. American Slang. Its origin and history. The argot of various racial and occupational groups. Although the text of Supplement II is related to that of The American Language, it is an independent work that may be read profitably by persons who do not know either The American Language or Supplement I.

American Difference: A Guide to American Politics in Comparative Perspective takes the reader through different aspects of democracy—political culture, institutions, interest groups, political parties, and elections—and, unlike other works, explores how the United States is both different from and similar to other democracies. The fully updated Second Edition has been expanded to include several new chapters and discussion on civil liberties and civil rights, constitutional arrangements, elections and electoral institutions, and electoral behavior. Book Vocabulary Change

Download or read book Vocabulary Change written by Gordon Reid Wood and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the gap between Hans Kurath's A Word Geography of the Eastern United States and E. Bagby Atwood's The Regional Vocabulary of Texas, this study examines word usage and its changing patterns, past and present, in eight of the Southern states. The area encompasses Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. The data collected were systematically recorded and analyzed by computer, and the results have been presented in maps, tables, and lists of word frequencies. In addition, the study describes and defines the salient traits of the Southern dialect of American English, and shows that they are far more national and far more complex than anyone had suspected. The book's immediate audience is that body of scholars interested in dialectology, sociolinguistics, and cultural differences. However, it will be of great value also to general readers and students interested in the history of the language.

Book English in the Southern United States

Download or read book English in the Southern United States written by Stephen J. Nagle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English of the southern United States is possibly the most studied of any regional variety of any language because of its rich internal diversity, its distinctiveness among regional varieties in the United States, its significance as a marker of regional identity, and the general folkloric appeal of southern culture. However, most, if not all, books about Southern American English have been directed almost exclusively toward scholars already working in the field. This 2003 volume, written by a team of experts, many of them internationally known, provides a broad overview of the foundations of and research on language variation in the southern United States designed to invite inquiry and inquirers. It explores historical and cultural elements, iconic contemporary features, and changes in progress. Central themes, issues and topics of scholarly investigation and debate figure prominently throughout the volume. The extensive bibliography will facilitate continued research.
