Book 100 Low Sodium Recipes for Big Appetites

Download or read book 100 Low Sodium Recipes for Big Appetites written by Mark Knoblauch and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ubiquitous. It's a word that means 'found everywhere'. For those of us on a low-sodium diet, it seems that sodium certainly classifies as a ubiquitous ingredient since it can feel as though almost everything we want to eat contains an excessively-high amount of sodium. To counter the widespread inclusion of sodium in food products we have the options of limiting our food choices or perhaps just eating smaller portion sizes. While these options are viable, they aren't necessarily realistic. Limiting our food choices quickly leads to staleness and boredom with our meals and can invite the chance of straying from our low-sodium practices. And for those of us who tend to eat more than the average person - the likelihood of being successful by eating smaller portion sizes just isn't practical as it can lead to ongoing hunger as well as repeated cravings. Written by a low-sodium practitioner, 100 Low Sodium Recipes for Big Appetites isn't 'just another low-sodium cookbook'. You won't find award-winning food photography or heartwarming anecdotes with each recipe. Rather, you'll find practical, low-sodium recipes that serve up an ample amount of food along with healthful information to assist you on your low-sodium journey, including: An overview of our relationship with sodium outlining what sodium is, how it affects us, and why it's so prevalent in the food industry Over 75 entrée recipes along with options for breakfast, sides, and desserts Entrées focused on providing ample amounts of food while adhering to a low-sodium approach Nutrition information based upon the entire recipe rather than 'per serving' Use of the familiar Nutrition Facts label to detail each recipe's nutrition information

Book Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake in the United States

Download or read book Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake in the United States written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-11-14 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reducing the intake of sodium is an important public health goal for Americans. Since the 1970s, an array of public health interventions and national dietary guidelines has sought to reduce sodium intake. However, the U.S. population still consumes more sodium than is recommended, placing individuals at risk for diseases related to elevated blood pressure. Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake in the United States evaluates and makes recommendations about strategies that could be implemented to reduce dietary sodium intake to levels recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The book reviews past and ongoing efforts to reduce the sodium content of the food supply and to motivate consumers to change behavior. Based on past lessons learned, the book makes recommendations for future initiatives. It is an excellent resource for federal and state public health officials, the processed food and food service industries, health care professionals, consumer advocacy groups, and academic researchers.

Book Low Sodium Diet

Download or read book Low Sodium Diet written by Maria Garrets and published by Dedona Publishing. This book was released on with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sodium is a vital electrolyte and mineral essential for various physiological functions in the human body. It helps regulate the balance of fluids in the body's cells and tissues, maintaining osmotic equilibrium to ensure that cells neither shrink nor swell excessively. Sodium ions are crucial for generating and transmitting electrical signals in nerves through a process known as the action potential, which enables nerve cells to communicate and is essential for muscle contractions, including those of the heart. Additionally, sodium works alongside potassium and calcium to ensure proper muscle function, aiding in muscle contraction and relaxation, making it essential for normal muscular activity. Sodium also plays a significant role in blood pressure regulation by influencing blood volume. The kidneys regulate sodium levels by adjusting the amount excreted in urine, thus maintaining appropriate blood pressure. Sodium is naturally present in various foods and is commonly added to many processed foods. Major sources include table salt (sodium chloride), processed and packaged foods such as canned soups, snacks, and deli meats, dairy products like cheese and milk, seafood, and vegetables such as celery and beets.

Book Dietary Reference Intakes for Sodium and Potassium

Download or read book Dietary Reference Intakes for Sodium and Potassium written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As essential nutrients, sodium and potassium contribute to the fundamentals of physiology and pathology of human health and disease. In clinical settings, these are two important blood electrolytes, are frequently measured and influence care decisions. Yet, blood electrolyte concentrations are usually not influenced by dietary intake, as kidney and hormone systems carefully regulate blood values. Over the years, increasing evidence suggests that sodium and potassium intake patterns of children and adults influence long-term population health mostly through complex relationships among dietary intake, blood pressure and cardiovascular health. The public health importance of understanding these relationships, based upon the best available evidence and establishing recommendations to support the development of population clinical practice guidelines and medical care of patients is clear. This report reviews evidence on the relationship between sodium and potassium intakes and indicators of adequacy, toxicity, and chronic disease. It updates the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) using an expanded DRI model that includes consideration of chronic disease endpoints, and outlines research gaps to address the uncertainties identified in the process of deriving the reference values and evaluating public health implications.
