Book excerpt: Excerpt from Privilege: A Novel of the Transition In conclusion, let me state categorically that privi lege is not a tract for the times. It teaches no lesson, urges no political creed, presents no real people in guise of characters of fiction. It is merely a story, born of the strange allurement of passing greatness, which sets an imaginary love drama against the tapestry of our turbulent and changing England. The characters are at once of their own age and of any age. T heir trousers and their petticoats, their tobacco and their slang are of the twentieth century, but their temptations, and their longings are those of men and women any time this thousand years. Book Woman s Rights Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Rights Man braves the storms and dangers of his fate; But woman is the mother of the State. IT is my intention, in the following pages, to show to the female sex their inalienable rights and just claims to a free participation in all the privileges and advantages pertaining to any civilized people or country, in due accordance with their sex and sphere of action in life. Notwithstanding there have been some things said and lectured on, and published in the journals and periodicals of the day, touching this important subject, yet, in my Opinion, it has not received that due research and that strict investigation which its intrinsic value and its high importance to the succeeding generations so justly merit. Never was there a time when this subject, blended as it is with the moral, the virtuous, and the well-being of our enlightened country, needed more strict discussion and pure investigation than at the present. When we see our happy and free continent inundated with vice, crime, and depravity, the time is matured that the genial and enlightened mind of both Male and Female of our community should inquire into the causes and the sources from which such torrents of evils emanate, and establish permanently such remedies as would evidently produce the Opposite happy results. Book Daughters of America

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daughters of America: Or, Women of the Century America has been richly blessed in its women, as well as its men, of patriotism, intelligence, usefulness, and moral worth. Indeed, it has been a marvel to many in the Old World, that the women of the New have been in many instances so thoroughly cultured, so admirably developed morally and intellectually, amid so much that was new and therefore crude in society, and in a freedom which the women of European nations have never enjoyed, and of which those of Asiatic peoples never dreamed. A cultured Christian women of English birth and education, but now in a lovely Scottish home, wrote to the writer of this volume, that, when visiting America, that which she most enjoyed "was the sense of freedom," - a freedom which has been the high privilege of the women of our first century, and will be yet more the glorious heritage of the women of the second, as the ripened fruit is garnered from the promise-blossom. "It seemed to me," wrote the lady above mentioned, "that by that freedom I was lifted up to a larger and diviner life, and a tender and reverent expectation of glorious possibilities for our race, and especially for women." Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Freewomen: Their Historical Privilege I was told that, though they formed valuable contributions to Constitutional History, the Committee felt they would cer tainly lead to political discussion, which must not be risked. At a public meeting in Aberdeen the same week, I gave a resume of my arguments, and the materials then collected I have frequently used since in Drawing-room Addresses, and in private conversation; in public papers, and in friendly cor respondence. So many have been surprised at the facts, and interested in the results, that, at the present crisis, I thought it advisable to Spend another six months in careful verifica tion of details, and in grouping apparently disconnected data, so that their full import m1ght be seen at a glance. My first authorities were Sydney Smith's Enfranchisement of \voman the Law of the Land and Mr. Chisholm Anstey's Book and Papers on The Representation of the People's Acts Thence I went through the materials of Constitutional History, the Statutes, Rolls of Parliament, State Papers, Parliamentary \vrits, Journals of the House of Commons, Reports of Cases, Works on Law, History, and Archeo logy, both printed and manuscript. Book The Woman s World 1889 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Woman s World 1889 Classic Reprint written by Oscar Wilde and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woman's World, 1889 Now if we apply this principle to the position of women with regard to the representative institutions of this country, I think we may say that the labours of the friends of light, from John Stuart Mill downwards, during the last twenty years have succeeded in proving that the exclusion of all women, except one, from direct political power is an anomaly; it is felt by the great body of quiet reasonable people throughout the country to be absurd, and its long continuance becomes therefore impossible. Some of the more glaring features of this anomaly and absurdity may be pointed out. Some years ago, before the two great extensions of the suffrage in 1867 and 1884, the possession of the Parliamentary franchise was a privilege entrusted to a selected few. The ex elusion of women at that time might have been either expedient or inexpedient, just or unjust, but it was not in anomaly, it was not absurd. Certain classes of persons were selected for this privilege, and to them it was confided in trust, as it were, for the rest of the community. The women who were excluded were not selected for a special disability of sex, but were associated in their exclusion with large bodies of their countrymen, to whom no exception on the ground of character and capacity could be taken. Now, however, the basis of the Constitution has been changed. The franchise is no longer a privilege granted to the selected few on the grounds of personal fitness, or, at any rate.
