Book John Bascom and the Origins of the Wisconsin Idea

Download or read book John Bascom and the Origins of the Wisconsin Idea written by J. David Hoeveler and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Progressive Era of American history, the state of Wisconsin gained national attention for its innovative economic and political reforms. Amidst this ferment, the "Wisconsin Idea" was popularized—the idea that a public university should improve the lives of people beyond the borders of its campus. During his term as governor (1901–1906), Robert La Follette routinely consulted with University of Wisconsin researchers to devise groundbreaking programs and legislation. Although the Wisconsin Idea is often attributed to a 1904 speech by Charles Van Hise, then president of the University of Wisconsin, David Hoeveler argues that it originated decades earlier, in the creative and fertile mind of John Bascom. A philosopher, theologian, and sociologist, Bascom (1827–1922) deeply influenced a generation of students at the University of Wisconsin, including La Follette and Van Hise. Hoeveler documents how Bascom drew concepts from German idealism, liberal Protestantism, and evolutionary theory, transforming them into advocacy for social and political reform. He was a champion of temperance, women's rights, and labor, all of which brought him controversy as president of the university from 1874 to 1887. In a way unmatched by any of his peers at other institutions, Bascom outlined a social gospel that called for an expanded role for state governments and universities as agencies of moral improvement. Hoeveler traces the intellectual history of the Wisconsin Idea from the nineteenth century to such influential Progressive Era thinkers as Richard T. Ely and John R. Commons, who believed university researchers should be a vital source of expertise for government and citizens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisconsin Idea Thanks to the movement for genuinely democratic popular government which Senator La Follette led to overwhelming victory in Wisconsin, that state has become literally a laboratory for wise experimental legislation aiming to secure the social and political betterment of the people as a whole. Nothing is easier than to demand, on the stump, or in essays and editorials, the abolition of injustice and the securing to each man of his rights. But actually to accomplish practical and effective work along the line of such utterances is so hard that the average public man, and average public writer, have not even attempted it; and unfortunately too many of the men in public life who have seemed to attempt it have contented themselves with enacting legislation which, just because it made believe to do so much, in reality accomplished very little. But in Wisconsin there has been a successful effort to redeem the promises by performances, and to reduce theories into practice. In consequence legislative leaders and reformers pushing legislation in other states write by the hundred to the men in power in Wisconsin asking for information on what has been done. Mr. McCarthy, the chief of the Legislative Reference Library of the Free Library Commission, has written this book primarily to answer such inquiries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many Americans, Ricky Vogt was searching for a career and purpose during the fallout from America's 2008 economic implosion. At the same time the nation was searching to resolve energy, environmental, and economic problems within a dysfunctional political system. This story explains how Vogt joined his fellow Americans as they fought amongst themselves in search of a better vision. He questions how community resolves the tension between intolerance and personal liberty; between the selfishness of trickle-down economics and the ideals of spirituality and our founding documents promoting the common good. The book depicts Vogt's evolving search for better solutions and a new way forward.

CHAPTER VI Labor, Health And Public Welfare Under the management of Mr. Halford Erickson, the labor bureau of the state of Wisconsin was developed so that it ranked with that of New York and Massachusetts. Sound laws for the protection of life and health were enacted. The cUki_l_abor_ljiwjra&.a great advance in such legislation. It remained however, for the 1911 session of the Wisconsin legislature to enact a code of labor legislation which puts the work of this body ahead of any other in the country. Besides the numerous laws for the protection of life and health and the better conditions for women in factories, there are two laws which are worthy of comment; the first of which is the workmen's compensation act, chapter 50, laws of 191 DEGREES The conflict over that act and the previous attempts upon the part of the legislature to modify the laws relating to contributory negligence, co-employment, the assumption of the risk, etc., form an interesting page in the history of Wisconsin. This state has only recently become a manufacturing state but the necessity of new conditions is sure to bring legislation in its trail. No doubt the humane spirit prevalent in the state and the whole enlightened attitude of the courts tended to stimulate activity for betterment. The inadequacy of all old remedies for personal injuries was apparent to all. The labor bureau under the direction of an expert from the university, made a scientific study of this question, which revealed such startling results that there was evidently but one course to follow, namely, to adopt some form of workmen's compensation or industrial insurance. As Chief Justice Winslow of the supreme court said in the decision recently rendered, in which the constitutionality of this law
