But who wants to go out when you can stay in. . .? Stolen Pleasures Sebastian Blake, Earl of Merrick, long ago fled the responsibilities of his title to become the infamous pirate, Captain Phoenix. But the booty he's just captured on a merchant ship is a fierce tempered minx who claims to be a bride. . .his bride, married to him by proxy on behest of their fathers. He could shame his hated family and return his beautiful wife untouched, but no treasure has ever proved more tempting to Sebastian, and making their marriage a true one--in every sense--is his one urgent desire . . . Lucien's Gamble Lucien Remington's reputation as a debauched libertine who plays by no one's rules--in business or the bedroom--is well deserved. He gets what he wants, social repudiation be damned. But society can keep from him the one thing he truly desires, the untouchable Lady Julienne La Coeur. Until she sneaks into his club dressed as a man and searching for her irresponsible brother. Suddenly she's in Lucien's grasp, his to take, and his mind is filled with the most wickedly sinful thoughts. A gentleman would walk away from the temptation she presents. But then, Lucien has never claimed to be a gentleman. . . Her Mad Grace Hugh La Coeur never wanted to be the Earl of Montrose. Wine, women, and a hefty wager are preferable to responsibility of any kind. It's certainly preferable to spending the night in an eerie, neglected mansion owned by a legendary madwoman. The duchess's companion, the fiercely independent Charlotte, is another matter altogether. Hugh would be happy to spend as many nights in her bed as possible. He knows she's hiding terrible secrets, but for once in his life, Hugh has the desire to take on someone else's burden as his own, no matter what the danger. . . They're mad, bad, and totally irresistible. . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BLURB With the acquisition of Babe's Galore, Jamie Lee's pursuit of Cheryl gets serious. Offering high paying jobs to his friend and his wife, Tommy becomes the stage manager and Cheryl becomes Jamie Lee's personal aide (with benefits) Jamie Lee's fabulous run of luck continues when, per doctor's instructions, Sonny Riverton relinquished control of the ministry to Jamie Lee. EXCERPT Cheryl tied her bikini top strap in place after finishing her final set and counted her take for the set. One-hundred-ninety-seven dollars. That gave her over eight hundred for the night—her best night yet. The hard-core roosters were quite generous not to mention especially rowdy tonight and she had gotten particularly worked up—more than usual. Only thirty minutes to go until I get off and can go home to Tommy. God, I feel frisky. I hope he's as keyed up as I am. As she entered the dressing room at closing time, Mike—the new manager—waited for her by her locker. "What are you doin' in here?" she asked in an accusing tone. "Hey doll, don't get your pretty puss in an uproar. There's one last live one in the VIP Dance Room for you to take care of." She turned her face and scrunched her nose and lips. "Aw, Mike, do I have too. I really need to get home." "C'mon babe, you know the rules. The customer is king and this one's paying extra." "Yeah. How much?" With a smile as wide as Texas Stadium he held up five fingers. Cheryl's eyes grew wide and her mouth opened wide. "Five hundred?" Appearing to hold back a chuckle, Mike took hold of her shoulders. "Baby, tonight you are the five…thousand…dollar…lady." Excitement shot through her. "God all mighty, what in tarnation does he want?" Mike shrugged. "Don't know, but he says you know him." Mike counted out ten hundred dollar bills and handed them to her. "Here's a thousand. He said he'd pay the rest when the dance was over." I wonder who… Cheryl smiled and cheerfully said, "I guess I better get in there." Since Joe had first forced her to do lap dances, to her surprise, she'd grown to like them. Turning the customer on turned her on and since she'd started doing them topless, she'd even allowed a few of the customers—the ones she especially liked—to fondle her.She didn't think it was wrong because no one but Tommy had ever put their thing in her—nor would they. Now, she was about to get five thousand dollars for doing a lap dance. She couldn't wait. Heading toward the VIP Room, a tall bull of a man stood beside the door watching Cheryl as she approached. "What are you doing here?" The man looked her up and down. "You Cheryl?" She nodded. "Ah-huh." He opened the door. "Go on in." She stepped in, and the door closed behind her. Was that a lock click? She shrugged. Panning the room left to right, she thought the room was empty until she spotted him in the right corner—Jamie Lee. "What do you want?" she snarled.

Book The Genteel Tradition and the Sacred Rage

Download or read book The Genteel Tradition and the Sacred Rage written by Robert Dawidoff and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asking why many American intellectuals have had such difficulty accepting wholeheartedly the cultural dimensions of democracy, Robert Dawidoff examines their alienation and ambivalence, a tradition of detachment he identifies as "Tocquevillian." In the work of three towering American literary figures - Henry Adams, Henry James, and George Santayana -- Dawidoff explores fully this distancing and uneasy response to democratic culture. Linked together by common Harvard, Cambridge, and New England connections, and by an upper-class, Brahmin background, each of these three writers, Dawidoff argues, was at once self-critical and contemptuous of cultural democracy -- especially its indifference to them and what they represented. But their claims to detached observation of democratic culture must be viewed skeptically, Dawidoff warns, and borrowed with caution. An important contribution of the book is its integration of gay issues into American intellectual history. Viewing James's and Santayana's attitudes toward their homosexuality as affecting their views of American society, Dawidoff examines this significant and overlooked element in the American intellectual and cultural mix. Dawidoff also includes powerful new readings of Adams's Democracy and James's The Ambassadors and discusses Santayana's Americanist essays. In his foreward, Alan Trachtenberg notes the "taboo" that seems to have fallen over the word democracy. "It is rarely encountered anymore in humanistic studies," he says, " snubbed in favor of gender, class, race, region." This trend, he says, may be in part due to an unease about studying the culture in which we participate because the posture of the cutural critic implies a certain detachment. "The Genteel Tradition and the Sacred Rage returns the question of democracy to centerstage," he concludes, "not as political theory alone but as cultural and personal experience."
