Book A Long Walk in the Himalaya

Download or read book A Long Walk in the Himalaya written by Garry Weare and published by Transit Lounge. This book was released on 2007 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Garry Weare is enigmatic, funny and he has an enormous conscience. He brings into the story of his Himalayan traverse a succession of vignettes about people's lives that he meets along the way, relevant history, natural history observations and a delightful sprinkling of his inimitable sense of humour. The warmth of his relationships with his old Kashmiri friends and various people from the trekking fraternity adds a wonderful dimension to this journeyman's tale'. Peter Hillary Weare's finely rendered story of his five-month trek from the sacred source of the Ganges through the Kullu Valley, Zanskar and Ladakh to his houseboat in Kashmir is remarkably entertaining. The people he meets and travels with are fully-fledged characters that the reader comes to know and care about while the Himalaya, captured in all their variety, cast their spell. It is as if the act of walking allows the author to fully understand all the nuances - spiritual, environmental, social and political - of this inspiring region. 'A Long Walk in the Himalaya' is a book to savour, a book that the reader will return to again and again. English-born Garry Weare has had a long-standing relationship with the Himalaya. In 1970 he first went to Kashmir to teach. It changed his life and he went on to live on a houseboat in Kashmir, to pioneer many classic treks and to research the 'Trekking in the Indian Himalaya' guidebook published by Lonely Planet, now in its 4th edition. Weare is a life member of the Himalayan Club, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a noted mountain photographer and a founding director of the Australian Himalayan Foundation. He has one daughter, two stepdaughters and lives with his wife Margie Thomas in the Southern Highlands, NSW.

Book Kashmir in Conflict

Download or read book Kashmir in Conflict written by Victoria Schofield and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why has the valley of Kashmir, famed for its beauty and tranquillity, become a major flashpoint, threatening the stability of a region of great strategic importance and challenging the integrity of the Indian state? This book examines the Kashmir conflict in its historical context, from the period when the valley was an independent kingdom right up to the struggles of the present day. Located on the borders of China, Central Asia and the Sub-Continent, the insurgency in the valley has also created serious tensions between India and Pakistan. Drawing upon research in India and Pakistan, as well as historical sources, this book traces the origins of the state in the 19th century and the controversial "sale" by the British of the predominantly Muslim valley to a Hindu Maharaja in 1846. Through an exploration of the implications for Kashmir of independence in 1947, it gives a critical account of why, for Kashmir, self-determination may seem a more attractive option than affiliation to a larger multi-racial whole."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Book Kashmir

Download or read book Kashmir written by Garry Weare and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kashmir: A journey through history will appeal to the armchair traveller and history buff. Neither an academic tome nor a guidebook, it describes how Kashmir—ringed by snow-capped peaks—has attracted pilgrims and Sufis, armies and traders, travellers and adventurers, over the centuries. Weare creates engaging story lines that capture the passage of Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic influences which have shaped Kashmir’s rich cultural history. The book traces the journey of the region from its ancient times to the present, with chapters highlighting periods in history, such as the role of the Mughal emperors. The Treaty of Amritsar signed by the British East India Company and Maharaja Gulab Singh of Jammu, in 1846, created the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. In October 1947 Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession to India. Since then Kashmir has been subject to decades of instability, along with years battling insurgency, as it continues on its long walk to normalcy."--

Book excerpt: Dispatches from a valley under siege Since 1989, Kashmir has rarely been out of the headlines, as local militants, foreign terrorists and Indian security forces battle it out in a region once known as `paradise on earth'. In all the propaganda, and news and statistics about terrorist strikes, counter insurgency operations and the foreign hand, the human stories, however, are often lost. In this book, journalist Humra Quraishi draws upon her extensive travels in the Valley and interactions with ordinary Kashmiris over two decades to try and understand what the long strife has done to them. She brings us heartrending stories of mothers waiting for their young sons who disappeared years ago, picked up by the army or by militants; minds undone by the constant uncertainty and fear and almost daily humiliation; old harmonies tragically undermined by the atmosphere of suspicion; an entire generation of young Kashmiris who have grown up with no concept of security; and individual families and a whole society falling apart under the strain of the seemingly endless turmoil

Book The Kashmir Conundrum

Download or read book The Kashmir Conundrum written by General N.C. Vij and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2021-12-22 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kashmir has been considered one of the longest-running and most intractable conflicts of the modern world. How does one make sense of the issue and look to the future? In The Kashmir Conundrum, former Indian Army chief General N.C. Vij – who himself hails from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir – gives the complete picture. Starting with a history of Kashmir and its people, he covers the invasion and accession of the kingdom, the wars India and Pakistan have fought, the Pulwama attack of 2019, India's surgical strike at Balakot, and the various formulae that have been tried to settle the issue, right up to the controversial abrogation of the state's special status. In doing so, he draws on his own experience of dealing with the subject closely – as DGMO during the Kargil war; as vice chief of the army during the Parliament attack of 2001; and then as the chief at a time when Pakistan-sponsored infiltration was at its peak. Informed by a field expert's astute perspective, this is a comprehensive and up-to-date account of Kashmir from an army man who has engaged with it at the highest levels.

Book excerpt: This early work by Francis Younghusband was originally published in 1911 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Kashmir' is a work on the geography and people of the Indian subcontinent. Francis Younghusband was born in 1863 at Munree, British India, the son of Major-General John W. Younghusband and Clara Jane Shaw. Younghusband attended Clifton College, Bristol, before entering the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1881. After his time at the Academy he was commissioned as a Subaltern in the 1st King's Dragoon Guards where he began his military career.
