Book excerpt: Ever since airplane speeds started to approach the speed of sound, the study of compressible flow problems attracted much talent and support in the major indus trialized countries. Today, gas dynamics is a mature branch of science whose many aspects and applications are much too numerous to be mastered by a single person or to be described in a few volumes. This book commemorates the 70th birthday of a great pioneer and teacher of gas dynamics, Dr. Klaus Oswatitsch, Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the Technical University of Vienna and former Director of the Institute for Theoretical Gas Dyna mics, Deutsche Forschungs-und Versuchsanstalt fUr Luft-und Raumfahrt. Several reasons motivated us to prepare an English translation of Oswatitsch's selected sci entific papers. First, we hope that a book containing his major papers will be wel come as a valuable reference text in gas dynamics. Oswatitsch's work is frequently used in the literature in one form or another, but it is usually quite time-consuming for the English speaking reader to consult the original texts. As a result, reference to and understanding of his papers is often incomplete. For example, Oswatitsch's formulation of the equivalence rule hardly ever is quoted in recent textbooks, al though it preceded declassification of Whitcomb's results by several years. Further more, his papers contain much information, which has not yet been fully appreciated in the Anglo-American literature.

Book excerpt: The accuracy of existing methods for estimating the drag based on experimental flow field measurements were assessed for two-dimensional bodies. The effects of control volume boundary placement and inherent simplifying assumptions were also investigated. Wind tunnel experiments were performed on a circular cylinder operating at a Reynolds number of 8,000 and 20,000, and on a NACA 0018 airfoil operating at a chord Reynolds number of 100,000 for three angles of attack ([alpha]), specifically, 5°, 10°, and 15°. The circular cylinder experiments fall within the the shear layer transition flow regime. Airfoil investigations span both types of flow development common to low Reynolds number airfoil operation. For [alpha] = 5° and 10°, a separation bubble forms on the upper surface of the airfoil, while, for [alpha] = 15°, the flow separates without reattaching, resulting in a stalled airfoil. Wake velocity and pressure measurements were performed at several downstream locations to investigate the impact of control volume boundary placement. Wake profiles were measured between 3 and 40 diameters downstream from the circular cylinder axis and between 1 and 4.5 chord lengths from the trailing edge of the airfoil. In addition to wake profiles, the outer flow velocity variation was quantified to investigate the appropriate location to measure freestream flow characteristics in a test section with streamwise-varying outer flow conditions. The results show that drag estimates are strongly dependent on the streamwise position of the measured wake profile for all methods investigated. Drag estimates improved, and streamwise variation decreased, with increasing streamwise position of the flow measurements. For the pressure based method examined, wake measurements should be taken at least 10 times the projected model height downstream of the model. In the case of the circular cylinder, this is equivalent to 10 diameters and, for the airfoil investigated, it is approximately 1 chord length from the trailing edge. For the methods relying on velocity measurements, acceptable estimates of drag were possible when based on measurements taken at least 30 projected heights downstream, i.e., 30 diameters for the circular cylinder and 3 chord lengths for the airfoil model investigated. The findings highlight the importance of providing a detailed description of the methodology and experimental implementation for drag estimates based on flow field measurements. Finally the study offers guidelines for implementing momentum integral based drag calculations in future investigations.

Book excerpt: This work couples the two enabling technologies of wake-integral drag prediction and Vorticity Confinement (VC) for the improved prediction of drag from an Euler CFD simulation. Induced drag computations of a thin wing are shown to be more accurate than the more common method of surface pressure integration when compared to Prandtl lifting-line theory. Furthermore, the Vorticity Confinement method is shown to improve trailing vortex preservation and counteract the shift from induced to entropy drag as the distance with which the vortex convects downstream of the wing increases. The desired application of this work is drag prediction, most notably induced drag, for aerodynamic design. High-fidelity Euler CFD simulations are desirable as they provide the most complete inviscid flowfield solution. However, accurate induced drag prediction via the surface integration of pressure is generally intractable barring a sufficiently refined surface grid and resultant increase in computational load. Furthermore, the alternative wake-integral technique for drag prediction suffers from numerical dissipation. VC is shown to control the numerical dissipation with very modest computational overhead. VC is implemented in both a two-dimensional finite-volume Euler code written by the author as well as the commercial cfd code ANSYS FLUENT. The two-dimensional research code is used to test specific formulations of the VC body force terms and illustrate the computational efficiency of the method compared to a 'brute force' reduction in spatial step size. For a three-dimensional wing simulation, AN-SYS FLUENT is employed with the VC body force terms added to the solver with user-defined functions (UDFs).
