Book A Voyage to Viking Land Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Voyage to Viking Land Classic Reprint written by Thomas Sedgwick Steele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voyage to Viking-Land The following pages are all an introduction to one of the loveliest countries of the Old World which it has been the pleasure of the writer to visit. It is the itinerary of a most delightful voyage along the coast of Norway of a happy party of tourists, who, on pleasure bent, were blessed with an excellent steamer, fine weather, good appetites, and a capacity for enjoyment only limited by the daily supply which the circum stances offered. It was like cruising in one's own yacht, without its responsibilities and cares. The glories of the silent fjords, the wonderful glaciers, and the majestic water falls, were seen to their very best advantage, while few tourists to this region obtain such unobstructed views of the splendours of the midnight sun. With the exception of the portraits, almost all of the illustra tions are reproduced from photographs taken by the writer on the trip, the larger portion from the steamer's deck while sailing through the fjords, and along the shores. Download or read book Beyond the Northlands written by Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the dying days of the eighth century, the Vikings erupted onto the international stage with brutal raids and slaughter. The medieval Norsemen may be best remembered as monk murderers and village pillagers, but this is far from the whole story. Throughout the Middle Ages, long-ships transported hairy northern voyagers far and wide, where they not only raided but also traded, explored and settled new lands, encountered unfamiliar races, and embarked on pilgrimages and crusades. The Norsemen travelled to all corners of the medieval world and beyond; north to the wastelands of arctic Scandinavia, south to the politically turbulent heartlands of medieval Christendom, west across the wild seas to Greenland and the fringes of the North American continent, and east down the Russian waterways trading silver, skins, and slaves. Beyond the Northlands explores this world through the stories that the Vikings told about themselves in their sagas. But the depiction of the Viking world in the Old Norse-Icelandic sagas goes far beyond historical facts. What emerges from these tales is a mixture of realism and fantasy, quasi-historical adventures, and exotic wonder-tales that rocket far beyond the horizon of reality. On the crackling brown pages of saga manuscripts, trolls, dragons, and outlandish tribes jostle for position with explorers, traders, and kings. To explore the sagas and the world that produced them, Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough now takes her own trip through the dramatic landscapes that they describe. Along the way, she illuminates the rich but often confusing saga accounts with a range of other evidence: archaeological finds, rune-stones, medieval world maps, encyclopaedic manuscripts, and texts from as far away as Byzantium and Baghdad. As her journey across the Old Norse world shows, by situating the sagas against the revealing background of this other evidence, we can begin at least to understand just how the world was experienced, remembered, and imagined by this unique culture from the outermost edge of Europe so many centuries ago.

Book excerpt: One hundred years have passed since Robert Falcon Scott's beleagured expeditionary team arrived at the South Pole, only to find that they had been beaten by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. The most feted explorer of his generation, Amundsen counted the discovery of the Northwest Passage, in 1905, as well as the North Pole amongst his greatest achievements. In the golden age of polar exploration Amundsen, whose revolutionary approach to technology transcends polar and nautical significance, was a titan among men. However, until now, his story has rarely featured as more than a footnote to Scott's tragic failure. Reviled for defeating Scott but worshipped by his men, Amundsen was pursued by women and creditors throughout his life before disappearing on a rescue mission for the Italian Fascist who had set off in an airship to claim the North Pole for Mussolini. The Last Viking is the life of a visionary and a showman, who brought the era of Shackleton to an end, put the newly independent Norway on the map and was the twentieth century's brightest trailblazing explorer. Against the backdrop of the race to conquer the most inhospitable corners of the earth, The Last Viking stands alongside The Worst Journey in the World for its grim immediacy of heroism and hardship. Bestriding the generation defined by adventure and the unquenchable desire for discovery, it is the mesmerising story of courage, misery, friendship and the ultimate price paid for immortality.

Book Ibn Fadlan and the Land of Darkness

Download or read book Ibn Fadlan and the Land of Darkness written by Ibn Fadlan and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 922 AD, an Arab envoy from Baghdad named Ibn Fadlan encountered a party of Viking traders on the upper reaches of the Volga River. In his subsequent report on his mission he gave a meticulous and astonishingly objective description of Viking customs, dress, table manners, religion and sexual practices, as well as the only eyewitness account ever written of a Viking ship cremation. Between the ninth and fourteenth centuries, Arab travellers such as Ibn Fadlan journeyed widely and frequently into the far north, crossing territories that now include Russia, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Their fascinating accounts describe how the numerous tribes and peoples they encountered traded furs, paid tribute and waged wars. This accessible new translation offers an illuminating insight into the world of the Arab geographers, and the medieval lands of the far north.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Viking Blood: A Story of Seafaring He was christened Donald Pereival McKenzie, but his mother preferred to call him Pereival. The father, however insisted on the "Donald" and demanded that it be given priority over whatever appellation the mother might desire to add to the rare old Highland surname of McKenzie. Captain McKenzie received the news of his son's arrival into the world just as his ship was leaving the coaling station at Cape Verde Islands, but his wife's suggestion of "Pereival" caused him to hold the ship to an anchor while he dashed off a letter protesting against the tacking of such a namby-pamby name on to a son of his. "'Donald' is the name I have set my heart on, Janet, and I won't have the name of McKenzie defiled by any such English designation as 'Pereival'. I won't have any Perey McKenzies in my family." Then, to conciliate his wife, who, he felt, deserved some consideration, he added, "Yon may call him Pereival also if you've set your mind on it, but remember, Donald comes first " So Donald Pereival McKenzie it was, and thus it is inscribed in the Register of Births for the City of Glasgow, in the County of Lanark, Scotland, in the year of our Lord, Eighteen Hundred and Seventy-six. Though registered thus by the laws of church and state and in the mind of the father, yet the mother won her desire for a time and omitted the "Donald" when addressing, or referring to, her son. Magnus Magnusson's indispensable study of this great period presents a rounded and fascinating picture of a people who, in modern eyes, would seem to embody striking contradictions. They were undoubtedly pillagers, raiders and terrifying warriors, but they were also great pioneers, artists and traders - a dynamic people, whose skill and daring in their exploration of the world has left an indelible impression a thousand years on.

Whose knee bent only to its proved superior. Not to the man who was king-born merely, did their allegiance go. But to the man who showed himself their leader in courage and their master in skill. And so it was with their choice of a religion, when at last the death day of Odin dawned. Not to the God who forgives, nor to the God who suffered, did they give their faith; but they made their vows to the God who makes men strong, the God who is the never-dying and all powerful Lord of those who follow Him. Download or read book Viking Tales written by Jennie Hall and published by Yesterdays Classics. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nights were long in Iceland winters of long ago. A whole family sat for hours around the fire in the middle of the room. That fire gave the only light. Shadows flitted in the dark corners. Smoke curled along the high beams of the ceiling. The children sat on the dirt floor close by the fire. The grown people were on a long narrow bench that they had pulled up to the light and warmth. Everybody's hands were busy with wool. As the family worked in the red fire-light, the father told of the kings of Norway, of long voyages to strange lands, of good fights. And in farmhouses all through Iceland these old tales were told over and over until everybody knew them and loved them. Men who could sing and play the harp were called "skalds," and they called their songs "sagas." Eventually these stories were written down on sheepskin or vellum so that we can enjoy them today. We follow the fortunes of Harald from the time he is acknowledged by his father as a baby and given his own thrall at the cutting of his first tooth, through his exploits as a viking adventurer, to his crowning as King of Norway. It is when Harald is King of Norway that population pressures at home and eagerness for adventure and booty from other lands combine to drive some of the bolder Vikings to set forth from their native land. Sailing ever westward across the Atlantic, they hop along the chain of islands that loosely connects Norway with America-Orkneys and Shetlands, Faeroes, Iceland, and Greenland. It is from link to link of this chain that the characters in our story sail in search of home and adventure. Discoveries are made by accident. Ships are driven by the wind into unknown ports, resulting in landings and settlements in Iceland, Greenland, and America. The crude courage of these men and strangeness of their adventures appeal strongly to children, while their love of truth, hardy endurance, and faithfulness to the promised word make them characters to emulate. Suitable for children ages 9 and up to read to themselves and for children as young as 6 as a read-aloud.
