The Medusa was a French frigate which was shipwrecked on July 2, 1816 on the bank of Arguin, off the coasts of Mauritania, leaving 390 dead and 15 survivors, of which 5 died before their transfer to Saint-Louis in Senegal. Naufrage de la Fregate 'La Meduse'/ Narrative of a Voyage to Senegal is the testimony of two of the survivors: Alexandre Correard and Jean-Baptiste Henri Savigny.

Of one hundred and fifty persons embarked upon the raft, and left to their fate, only fifteen remained alive thirteen days afterwards; but of these fifteen, so miraculously saved, life constituted the sole possession, being literally stripped of every thing. At Paris, some benevolent individuals have recently opened a subscription for their relief. When the ship sank (July 2, 1816), he was one of three officers who volunteered to take a place on the raft among 152 shipwrecked people. He is one of the 15 survivors and testifies in a report to the Ministry of the Navy about the atrocities committed during the drifting of the raft, including acts of anthropophagy. He explains the details of the tragedy to Géricault, before he paints his famous Raft of the Medusa.
