Book Review and Outlook for the World Oil Market

Download or read book Review and Outlook for the World Oil Market written by Shane S. Streifel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the collapse of the Soviet system, the immense problems of environmental pollution in Central and Eastern Europe were widely publicized. Less well known were its effects on health in the region, which have led to a serious health crisis. This report examines the degree to which the pollution adversely affected human health, putting it in the context of other health determinants such as socioeconomic factors, health care standards and availability, and lifestyle factors. Among the numerous pollutants, the report points to lead, dust, toxic gases, and nitrates in rural water supplies as having a significant impact on health in Central and Eastern Europe. The author suggests possible avenues for international action. However, an analysis of the determinants of health reveals that addressing the pollution problems alone will not solve the health crisis. Improving health in this region will depend on the changing economic fortunes of individual countries and the ability of each to create a supportive social environment for its citizens.

Book Stability Within Uncertainty

Download or read book Stability Within Uncertainty written by Anthony Ernest Reinsch and published by Calgary : Canadian Energy Research Institute. This book was released on 1988 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a brief discussion of world oil market developments since the early 1970s, identifying the fundamental characteristics and features of the market through to the end of this century. It also examines the history and current structure of world oil demand, analyzed in terms of demand for crude oil products in the various regions. A number of key factors and fundamental trends in crude oil consumption are identified, which can be expected to play an important role in future oil demand. In addition, the study provides an examination of the history and current structure of world crude oil supply, emphasizing the methodology employed in representing crude oil production, reserves additions and productive capacity development within the analytical framework. A series of sensitivity cases are presented together with the reference case crude oil market scenario generated by the integration of the demand- and supply-side analyses. Finally, the study's authors draw together the critical conclusions arising from the analysis.

Book The Correlation Between Physical and Financial Crude Oil Markets

Download or read book The Correlation Between Physical and Financial Crude Oil Markets written by Johannes Sailer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,6, Humboldt-University of Berlin (School of Business and Economics ), course: Power Games in Energy Markets, language: English, abstract: Crude oil is currently the most important source of energy in the world. Thanks to advanced production and extraction methods, and due to new discoveries, the available reserves have grown over the last ten years. During this period of time, oil prices rose considerably. These increases in price are associated with the increasing energy demands of growing economies across the planet and a shifting of weight between the physical and financial oil market. The goal of this work is to examine the correlation between physical and financial crude oil markets as well as establish an explanation for the drastic increase in crude oil price in the past decade. The work is organized as follows: To begin, the characteristics of crude oil as well as its value chain are presented and examined. This is followed by an explanation of the physical and financial oil trade. To conclude, the fundamentals of the world oil market and the financial oil trade are examined to determine the relevance of causation with respect to the recent price increase.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses the physical crude oil market and three of its major benchmarks. The main research questions are: Which are the main benchmarks in the physical crude oil market and who are important actors in this market? What are the characteristics of the physical oil market and how does it operate regionally and integrate globally? The research questions are answered by providing a literature review of academic work that has been done in the field of physical crude oil markets, and by analysing and elaborating on information published by market participants. As a result, an overview of the physical crude oil market is provided by firstly, defining some of the most important market participants and elaborating on global crude oil flows. Secondly, the main focus of this thesis is laid on discussing three different global benchmarks, namely Brent, WTI and Dubai crude. Lastly, an overview of the research done on the integration of a global oil market is presented and the current price figures and outlooks are provided, in order to give a throughout overview of the current physical oil market conditions. *****This thesis discusses the physical crude oil market and three of its major benchmarks. Book Oil Price Volatility and the Role of Speculation

Download or read book Oil Price Volatility and the Role of Speculation written by Samya Beidas-Strom and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much does speculation contribute to oil price volatility? We revisit this contentious question by estimating a sign-restricted structural vector autoregression (SVAR). First, using a simple storage model, we show that revisions to expectations regarding oil market fundamentals and the effect of mispricing in oil derivative markets can be observationally equivalent in a SVAR model of the world oil market à la Kilian and Murphy (2013), since both imply a positive co-movement of oil prices and inventories. Second, we impose additional restrictions on the set of admissible models embodying the assumption that the impact from noise trading shocks in oil derivative markets is temporary. Our additional restrictions effectively put a bound on the contribution of speculation to short-term oil price volatility (lying between 3 and 22 percent). This estimated short-run impact is smaller than that of flow demand shocks but possibly larger than that of flow supply shocks.

Book International Dimensions of Monetary Policy

Download or read book International Dimensions of Monetary Policy written by Jordi Galí and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: United States monetary policy has traditionally been modeled under the assumption that the domestic economy is immune to international factors and exogenous shocks. Such an assumption is increasingly unrealistic in the age of integrated capital markets, tightened links between national economies, and reduced trading costs. International Dimensions of Monetary Policy brings together fresh research to address the repercussions of the continuing evolution toward globalization for the conduct of monetary policy. In this comprehensive book, the authors examine the real and potential effects of increased openness and exposure to international economic dynamics from a variety of perspectives. Their findings reveal that central banks continue to influence decisively domestic economic outcomes—even inflation—suggesting that international factors may have a limited role in national performance. International Dimensions of Monetary Policy will lead the way in analyzing monetary policy measures in complex economies.
