Book The Buddha on Mecca s Verandah

Download or read book The Buddha on Mecca s Verandah written by Irving Chan Johnson and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Buddha on Mecca's Verandah examines the many ways in which people living along an international border negotiate their ethnic, cultural, and political identities. This ethnography of a small community of Thai Buddhists in the Malaysian state of Kelantan draws on rich, original vignettes to show how issues such as territoriality, identity, and power frame the experiences of borderland residents. Although the Thai represent less than 10 percent of the Kelantan population, they are vocal about their identity as non-Muslim, non-Malay citizens. They have built some of the world's largest Buddhist statues in their tiny villages, in a state that has traditionally been a seat of Islamic governance. At the same time, the Thai grapple with feelings of social and political powerlessness, being neither Thai citizens nor Muslim Malaysians. This thoughtful study offers new perspectives and challenges the classical definition of boundaries and borders as spaces that enforce separation and distance. With insights applicable to comparative border and frontier studies around the world, The Buddha on Mecca's Verandah will appeal not only to anthropologists but also to specialists in Asian and Southeast Asian studies, cultural geography, religious and ethnic studies, globalization, and cosmopolitanism.

Book Beyond the Terrazzo Veranda

Download or read book Beyond the Terrazzo Veranda written by Morra Norman and published by Bayeux Arts Incorporated. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Terrazzo Veranda is more than a love story. Although a memoir, it traces how society changes over a lifetime. Our essence is due to many factors--some within our control--but many contingent on others' plans. Sometimes what happens before our birth impacts our personalities. My mother seeing my sister killed by a speeding truck from the veranda of our house affected my family and destroyed my mother. People mature and my evolution from a whining boy into a macho man and then a scholar was a slow and painful process. Others see us differently while struggling to know our talents and weaknesses. This story leads the reader from my early defiance, my success in sports, love of literature and lifelong passion for people into some unpredictable and dangerous situations. It also deals with prejudice, ignorance and sexism that I witnessed as a victim, a bystander and perpetrator. Having no single career, I am fortunate that working in business, earning a doctorate, teaching and being an actor allowed me to interact with people in different contexts. Sadly, nothing lasts and friendships, trysts and choices end. Living needs empathy for neighbors, ourselves, and the strangers we will meet.

Book excerpt: International educators can take the high road towards rigorous investment in the ideals of true cultural exchange or continue down the low road to customer satisfaction and design programs that reduce or eliminate challenges. International education structured according to the latter principle is little more than just another product in the global marketplace. In spite of the process of "globalization" and partly because of it, international education faces a major crisis. This volume, with contributors from Austria, Chile, France, Germany, The Netherlands, and the United States, sets forth a timely and provocative critique of international education and assesses its future under radically different conditions than those in place twenty years ago. Walter Grnzweig is professor of American literature and culture at Universitt Dortmund. He holds adjunct professorships at the University of Pennsylvania, University of New York at Binghamton and Canisius College. Nana Rinehart is associate director of the International Student Exchange Program.

Book On Moonan Brook

Download or read book On Moonan Brook written by Philip Du Rhone and published by Hybrid Publishers. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the late 1960s. Rebellion and "doing your own thing" is in. But while the majority of Australians flock to the beaches, one young man heads inland to find his patch of dirt and follow his dream. On the banks of Moonan Brook, surrounded by inhospitable and barely accessible bushland, a local on his horse stumbles across this twenty-three-year old with his inappropriate vehicle, a dog named Doggo, and a girlfriend sitting under a tree reading a book. He listens as the pale young city-slicker with a mannered accent tells him he wants to go bush. What drives him over the next fifty years to build and maintain a bush hut in challenging terrain will captivate the imagination as the dreamt-of patch materialises, a hut is built and grows, and the forest "tamed". Henry Lawson or Henry Thoreau? Along the way we catch glimpses of his fellow travellers who come and go over the years, each contributing in their own way to the fulfilment of one man's unwavering vision. Romances form and fade, friendships will span generations and continents. And through it all threads the forest: its plants, its creatures, its quiet power. Until finally, time dictates a letting go .…
