Book Storming the Eagle s Nest

Download or read book Storming the Eagle s Nest written by Jim Ring and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Fall of France in June 1940 to Hitler's suicide in April 1945, the swastika flew from the peaks of the High Savoy in the western Alps to the passes above Ljubljana in the east. The Alps as much as Berlin were the heart of the Third Reich.'Yes,' Hitler declared of his headquarters in the Bavarian Alps, 'I have a close link to this mountain. Much was done there, came about and ended there; those were the best times of my life . . . My great plans were forged there.'With great authority and verve, Jim Ring tells the story of how the war was conceived and directed from the Fuhrer's mountain retreat, how all the Alps bar Switzerland fell to Fascism, and how Switzerland herself became the Nazi's banker and Europe's spy centre. How the Alps in France, Italy and Yugoslavia became cradles of resistance, how the range proved both a sanctuary and a death-trap for Europe's Jews - and how the whole war culminated in the Allies' descent on what was rumoured to be Hitler's Alpine Redoubt, a Bavarian mountain fortress.

The bird is associated with authority and has a fierce beauty that speaks to those who look upon it. Today, the Bald Eagle is a protected species. Once on the brink of extinction, it is currently enjoying a comeback. In this book, wildlife and bird photography specialist Jeffrey Rich showcases over 150 of his storytelling photographs of Bald Eagles and shares insights into the birds’ habitat, feeding habits, mating patterns, the care of their young, and more. Readers will marvel over images of birds in flight, in nests with their young, at rest, preening, and capturing prey, as Rich chronicles the daily lives, in detail, of America’s favorite bird.

Book Snakes in the Eagle s Nest

Download or read book Snakes in the Eagle s Nest written by Alan Vick and published by Minnesota Historical Society. This book was released on 1995 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because future adversaries are likely to look for alternative means to challenging the U.S. Air Force (USAF) in the air to counter U.S. airpower, a recent RAND study for the USAF investigated those means. As part of that study, this historical effort sought to better understand past, present, and future ground threats to air bases. In the course of the research, it became clear that attacks on air bases were much more frequent and successful than is commonly appreciated. For this reason, the history of these attacks is pertinent to future USAF operations. This report presents a comprehensive overview of ground attacks on air bases from the first known attacks in 1940 to the most recent in 1992. The objectives, tactics, and outcomes of those attacks are analyzed to identify lessons learned and their applications to future conflicts. In particular, this report identifies the attack techniques that proved most difficult to counter and offers some suggestions for improving air base defenses against them. The five primary conclusions of this study are as follows: The most common air base attack objective was to destroy aircraft; seventy-five percent of the 645 attacks used standoff weapons; standoff attacks have proved extremely difficult to counter; reliance on non-air force services for air base defense proved problematic for Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) on Crete, the German Luftwaffe in North Africa, and the USAF in Vietnam; small forces using unsophisticated weapons have successfully destroyed or damaged over 2,000 aircraft.

Book excerpt: Designed and constructed by the eminent New York City architectural firm of Warren & Wetmore, Eagle's Nest estate is the easternmost Gold Coast mansion on Long Island's affluent North Shore. Included among them were the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, golfer Sam Snead, and the Tiffanys. Vanderbilt embarked on many of his legendary world voyages from this locale, along with a 50-person crew and a few fortunate invited passengers. During his travels, he collected natural history specimens and ethnographic artifacts from every corner of the earth. Book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird

Download or read book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird written by Jack E. Davis and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Books of the Month: Wall Street Journal, Kirkus Reviews From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you’re not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as “majestic” and “noble,” yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation’s founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the age when native peoples lived beside it peacefully with that when others, whether through hunting bounties or DDT pesticides, twice pushed Haliaeetus leucocephalus to the brink of extinction. Filled with spectacular stories of Founding Fathers, rapacious hunters, heroic bird rescuers, and the lives of bald eagles themselves—monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents—The Bald Eagle is a much-awaited cultural and natural history that demonstrates how this bird’s wondrous journey may provide inspiration today, as we grapple with environmental peril on a larger scale.

Book A View from the Eagle S Nest

Download or read book A View from the Eagle S Nest written by Bob Jack and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politicians routinely wield raw political power to push through troubling legislation like the Affordable Care Act, in which the will of the people was ignored to satisfy an extreme minority. National debt is skyrocketing, the Islamic State has exploded, and in Benghazi, we saw the senseless murders of the U.S. ambassador in Libya and three other Americansall as a result of politics, incompetence, and lies. This is what life looks like under the presidency of Barack Obama. Bob Jack, however, isnt letting him get away with it: He tracks Obamas actions, policies, and the results of his ill-fated leadership in this detailed assessment of his tenure as the commander in chief. He contends that no political team has ever brought to America a more radical agenda of change, unabashed insensitivity, and glowing errors in judgment than this liberal, progressive, leftist ideological express called the Obama administration. With Irans global influence spreading, Russia bullying its neighbors, and radical terrorists threatening to enslave freedom-loving Americans, its time we make things right by taking A View from the Eagles Nest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE upper lattices of a tall, narrow window were open, and admitted the view, of first somerichly-tinted vine leaves and purpling grapes, then, in dazzling freshness of new whitestone, the lacework fabric of a half-built minster spire, with a mason's crane on the summit, bending as though craving for a further supply of materials; and beyond, peeping throughevery crevice of the exquisite open fretwork, was the intensely blue sky of early autumn. The lower longer panes of the window were closed, and the glass, divided into circles andquarrels, made the scene less distinct; but still the huge stone tower was traceable, and, farther off, the slope of a gently-rising hill, clothed with vineyards blushing into autumnrichness. Below, the view was closed by the gray wall of a court-yard, laden with fruit-treesin full bearing, and inclosing paved paths that radiated from a central fountain, and leftspaces between, where a few summer flowers still lingered, and the remains of othersshowed what their past glory had bee
