Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satyapal Anands poetry is cerebral rather than emotional. It reveals a many splendored splash of color and sound. His poems reveal the essential mythopoeic self present in the poet himself, as in all humanity. Again, his personae are all inside his poems. Here and now or there and beyond combine and create word collages. By authenticating the effects of the vision and perceptions underlying them, his images give us new ways of seeing the world. There is a kind of double vision involved in it. His is the imagists faculty for seeing a thing at once precisely for itself and, at the same time, as part of a larger phenomenon. Many of his poems are dramatic monologues. In these the speaker does not speak in a vacuum. When he speaks or acts, it reflects the time, place, thought, social conventions, and general circumstances; but it also impinges upon political, philosophical, and religious shades of meaning that transgress the immediacy of the situation. Caroline Greene says that nothing extraordinary has happened in American poetry in the past half a century, and if an Urdu poet of Satyapal Anands stature chooses to bring his treasure house to the English-speaking word, it is likely to change the entire scenario here. It is precisely because the poet recovers the extracultural, historic-mythological ground of humanity as a whole that American poets have lost in localizing their poetry.

Book Music in the Mirrors

Download or read book Music in the Mirrors written by Greg Kuznetsov and published by Amazon. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this vast and interconnected novel, an immortal and equally enigmatic Mongolian conqueror known as the master of mirrors traps Narrm in a snow globe to join his growing collection, transforming the once vibrant cityscape into a whimsical yet harsh wonderland composed of purple rain and his signature mirrors. The fabric of his desire, representing the most powerful motive in the universe and the source of his energies spiralling the 5,857 worlds out of balance, remains an utter mystery. The mischievous Blowfish deity stands as his celestial rival as it guides an eccentric cast of characters along invisible winds using its many eyes. Among them are Coki, a Zanzibarian disc jockey lacking a muse, his constantly-drumming twin Iggy, former celebrity singer Janet Jouffret who is somehow immune to the purple lemonade, the reclusive Professor Lambert on a desperate hunt for his runaway pet baboon, an abandoned greyhound who becomes the Dog King, a snowy owl with an arsenal of impossible riddles, a vulture shaman who falls in love with a corpse, and an albino elephant merchant who dreams of transforming into a Homo sapien. These wandering souls must all collide in accordance with the fading hand of Fate in order to fulfill a multichromatic mission of three acts, taking them across a living island with bamboo and baboons as her hair and an awakening volcano as her mouth, a red desert inhabited by shifty shadows and scavengers, impossibly tall mountains guarded by bitter frost, minds to be unlocked by transcendent keys, and other strange new worlds. Their journeys express an epic saga spanning the birth and death of the universe.

Book excerpt: I believe theres something in predictions of doom and destruction. The truth, indeed, may be just a grain of salt in such prophecies, but even that grain of salt is enough to make you feel uneasy about the future of mankind. We know of Nostradamus (15031566), who made many prophecies about the human race, which have come true. It is now known that the Italian National Library in Rome made an amazing discovery in May 2005. Buried in their archives was a hitherto-unknown manuscript by the prophet of doom that he had handed to his son and later was donated to Pope Urban VIII. It did not surface again until now, almost four hundred years later.

Book Bryant May Hall of Mirrors

Download or read book Bryant May Hall of Mirrors written by Christopher Fowler and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London, 1969. With the Swinging Sixties under way, Detectives Arthur Bryant and John May find themselves caught in the middle of a good, old-fashioned manor house murder mystery. Hard to believe, but even positively ancient sleuths like Bryant and May of the Peculiar Crimes Unit were young once . . . or at least younger. Flashback to London 1969: mods and dolly birds, sunburst minidresses—but how long would the party last? After accidentally sinking a barge painted like the Yellow Submarine, Bryant and May are relegated to babysitting one Monty Hatton-Jones, the star prosecution witness in the trial of a disreputable developer whose prefabs are prone to collapse. The job for the demoted detectives? Keep the whistle-blower safe for one weekend. The task proves unexpectedly challenging when their unruly charge insists on attending a party at the vast estate Tavistock Hall. With falling stone gryphons, secret passageways, rumors of a mythical beast, and an all-too-real dismembered corpse, the bedeviled policemen soon find themselves with “a proper country house murder” on their hands. Trapped for the weekend, Bryant and May must sort the victims from the suspects, including a hippie heir, a blond nightclub singer, and Monty himself—and nobody is quite who he or she seems to be. Praise for Bryant & May: Hall of Mirrors “Arthur Bryant has written his memoirs—and a jolly good yarn they make, too. . . . As always in this series, this one’s a lark.”—The New York Times Book Review “[Hall of Mirrors is] a largely comic escapade whose tone evokes both the biting wit of Evelyn Waugh and the slapsticker shenanigans of P.G. Woodhouse.”—The Wall Street Journal “More fully fleshed-out suspects, clues, red herrings, twists, and honest mystery and detection than in the last three whodunits you read.”—Kirkus Reviews “The narrative [veers] between laugh-out-loud funny to macabre. . . . Eccentric and consistently entertaining.”—Booklist “Fowler evokes the period as neatly as he crafts the plot.”—Publishers Weekly “Wonderful.”—Deadly Pleasures “So Agatha Christie (intentionally). And as in a Christie, nothing is quite what it seems as one murder follows another. Love the butler.”—Poisoned Pen Newsletter

Book Mirrors

  • Author : Naguib Mahfouz
  • Publisher : American Univ in Cairo Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9789774245602
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Mirrors written by Naguib Mahfouz and published by American Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirrors is one of Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz's more unusual works. First published in serialized form in the Egyptian television magazine, it consists of a series of vignettes of characters from a writer's life--a writer very like Mahfouz himself. And accompanying each vignette is a portrait of the character by a friend of the author, the renowned Alexandrian artist Seif Wanli. Through each vignette--whether of a lifelong friend, a sometime adversary, or a childhood sweetheart--not only is that one character described but much light is thrown on other characters already familiar or yet to be encountered, as well as on the narrator himself, who we come to know well through the mirrors of his world of acquaintances. At the same time, Mirrors also reflects the recent history of Egypt, its political movements, its leaders, its wars, and its peace, all of which affect the lives of friends and enemies and of the narrator himself. As the translator writes in his Introduction, "the narrator's acquaintances from childhood, schooldays, and civil service career take him from the lofty heights of intellectual salons to the seemy squalor of brothels and drug dens; from the dreams of youth and nationalistic ideals to the sobering realities of post-revolutionary society and clashing economic and political values."The apparently simple but penetrating portraits by Seif Wanli add an extra, distinctive dimension to this already intriguing book. They originally appeared with the serialized texts in the television magazine, but were omitted when the book was first published in 1972, and were also omitted when the English translation first appeared in 1977. Now, in this special edition, the pictures and the complete text appear together for the first time.

Book Broken Mirrors and Burning Bushes

Download or read book Broken Mirrors and Burning Bushes written by Jeremy Rubinstein and published by Jeremy Rubinstein . This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Just call it the memoir love story of a drug addict white rapper with unresolved mommy and daddy issues." Ha. Yeah, that's a laugher. The love story part of course being my wife Alice. Except she forgets that my rap career in Southern California essentially ended with the shootout in the parking lot of Barnes and Noble, sending us pinballing across the country like a couple of wanna-be Bonnie and Clydes. Only Bonnie and Clyde weren't high on drugs, and they stuck to banks. Alice was a waitress when we met, so restaurants just made sense. And I'm pretty sure Bonnie and Clyde never had children. Our son Caleb was born in a crack motel while the cops were out in full force looking for us. But all that comes later - like way later - after Alice first goes into labor with our daughter Hannah on Halloween night - the night Corey and I got robbed at gunpoint by the Three Stooges. Of course, that wouldn't have happened had I not let Alice convince me that selling crystal meth would make me more money than just pot and ecstasy. But then Corey always said events like that tend to serve a higher purpose. What can I say - Halloween has always had a weird significance to me. There's something symbolic about running around at night with a mask on trying to be Master of your own Universe surrounded by ghosts and ghouls and goblins with your toy weapon in one hand and your goodie bag in the other trying to score as much candy as you can before the real darkness takes over - (Where did that child go? That kid with the He-Man mask? / Sometimes our biggest fears are the answers to questions we ask) Any other questions? Just read the damn book.

Book Not Needing All the Words

Download or read book Not Needing All the Words written by Annick Hillger and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading selected texts by Michael Ondaatje, including the novels In the Skin of a Lion and The English Patient and the poem "Birch Bark," Annick Hillger demonstrates how his writing both answers and challenges attempts to delineate the idea of a Canadian national self. She sets Ondaatje's work within the context of theoretical and philosophical ideas, developing the notion of a "literature of silence" concerned with finding a ground for self beyond the realm of language.
