Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of a Tour in Mexico and California During a recent excursion with my family in the neighboring Republic of Mexico, in California and other States and Territories of our own country, I made hasty notes from day to day of what I saw, and while these convey an inadequate idea of observations whose accuracy cannot always be depended on, I have yet ventured to think that my friends and acquaintances will not dislike to read what my impressions were, since it may be said, truly perhaps, that if any one will describe with sincerity, however imperfectly it may be done, those things he has himself seen, a certain interest will attach to the performance. With this feeling I have made a little book of these notes, and will ask those to whom I send a copy to regard it as a souvenir of the tour itself and of my cordial memory of themselves as well. Download or read book Some By Ways of California Classic Reprint written by Charles Franklin Carter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some by-Ways of California In publishing a second edition of this little book the writer wishes to express his acknowledgments to the public for the kind reception accorded to the first edition, published by The Grafton Press, New York. It is with pleasure he has learned that these articles have brought attention to the places described, and he hopes a second edition will prove quite as acceptable. Notwithstanding the time elapsed since the original issue, conditions pertain ing to all of the localities described remain very much the same. The railroad has not yet penetrated to Jolon or Pala or Pescadero, and they continue their tranquil existence unvexed by the turmoil of the outer world: the descriptions of these places are, therefore, quite as true to-day as they were at the time of the first publication. A short article, The Nightingale's Peer, has been added to the list of titles included in the first edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jessie Benton Frémont (1824-1902), the daughter of a Missouri Senator and wife of explorer John Charles Frémont, first came to California in 1849, when she and her young daughter spent six months at her husband's newly-acquired ranch at Mariposas, 140 miles east of San Francisco. The Frémonts also spent the years 1851-1852 and 1857-1861 at the Mariposas ranch before moving to St. Louis during the Civil War. They returned to California in 1887 and made Los Angeles their home for the rest of their lives. A year of American travel (1878) was written by Mrs. Frémont to earn badly-needed money for her family after her husband went bankrupt in 1873. Here she describes her first trip to California in 1849: the voyage and crossing at Chagres, life on the Mariposas ranch, visits to San José and Monterey, the life of women in California, the plight of the Mission Indians, the slavery controversy in the territory, and the Monterey Constitutional Convention of 1849. The book closes with the Frémonts' return to the East when Frémont assumed his seat in the U.S. Senate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Californian Circling the Globe Many, many moons ago I began to think and talk Of taking a trip to Palestine. The idea grew like a cabbage plant in rainy weather, and instead of going to Palestine and return has culminated in a trip to encircle the globe. I take with me my son, Leslie Elmer. I think he is about 19 years old - I cannot recollect the year, month or day in which he was born. Mrs. Fuller always knows, and were I at home could ask her. For many years I have called the young man by the rather Opprobrious epithet Of Crow, but in these writings we will just call him Elmer. After oiling the roadway leading up to our home, in order that the stay - at-homes would not be smothered with dust, and packing our three leather suit cases we bade farewell to everybody about us, getting on our train at Redlands Junc tion at a. M. Of July 15, 1902, thus commencing the long est and more than likely the most eventful journey Of our lives. As California is noted for large things, we noticed the acres of vineyard under one Ownership at Cucamonga.
